This feels exponentially worse than a heartbreak.
If I’m being honest, I haven’t even let this whole thing sink in. My head is all over the place and my heart is heavy – trying to make sense of all this.
This is by far, the hardest letter I’ve ever had to write.
I could write about how Stache changed my life, but that is an attempt that will prove to be futile at best, with what little words I have. I could also write about how it all started, about how I became part of this wonderful thing but maybe that story is for another time, another letter. And maybe if I ever see you around, we can have tea and I can tell you all about the funniest situations and the surreal moments I somehow found myself in because of Stache.
Stache has been the most beautiful thing that’s ever happened to me, at a time in my life wherein I needed beautiful things. It has been the primary cause of/and witness to my growth as a person the past years. I wouldn’t have even dared to dream about getting to where I am now if it weren’t for Stache. I never had a concrete dream to begin with, but Stache made me realize what I wanted to do with my life. Stache became what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Stache has shaped me into becoming my own person.
At this point, I’m only speaking for myself and how instrumental Stache has been to me. I can only imagine what it has done for other people. And to think that people actually paid attention to what we were doing is overwhelming. To think that at some point in time, we became a part of your life, to have that luxury, and possibly have been a source of inspiration, is the most wonderful thing. We couldn’t have asked for more.
I’d like to take this chance to say thanks. Thank you to everyone who believed in us for making us keep going. Thank you to everyone who belittled us for making us prove you wrong. Ultimately, thank you for letting us be a part of your life. I love you.
Over time, Stache became our home, our refuge. It was there when nothing else was. It was the only thing that was constant in all our crazy, little lives. It served as a timeline for all the joys, the pains, and the in-betweens of all of us.
Stache is our baby. We took care of it, gave it our everything, and watched it grow into this wonderful thing. And grow it did, by miles and miles, and it got to the point that it was growing at a pace we never expected. It was exciting and scary to watch where it was taking us. I’ve never been prouder of anything in my life than this. And now that our baby’s come of age, it’s time to let it go – at least for now.
I’d like to think we started something here. Whether or not it made an impact is beyond us, but the fact that we tried to make something out of absolute nothing is something I can be proud of. This has been an amazing ride. I hope you enjoyed reading Stache as much as we enjoyed making every single issue happen. It was all worth it. So, so worth it.
Soon enough, all the stars will align and spur new beginnings for all of us. This isn’t going to be the last you hear of Stache. I promise.
Stay gravy, baby.

For this issue the team decided to step out of its comfort zone and do something we haven’t yet done. In fact I was hesitant to dedicate a whole issue to “craft” for that very reason. Stache is not Frankie Magazine and nor do we want it to be. But actually meeting the challenge head on was at once terrifying and liberating, and we could not have done it if it weren’t for the team’s enthusiasm to make things happen.

Gracing our cover this month are Stache’s old friends Thea de Rivera and Gab Bustos, also known as The Girl + The Bull. We talked to them about food and relationships and the craft aspect of their business, among other things. We also interviewed artisans Benjie Torrado Cabrera, Anna Gorman, and Miguel Santiago of The Barista Box. There is an article about Marc Jacobs leaving Louis Vuitton, an article about the art of music sampling, and an article about the mixed mediums of embroidery and traditional art. We also paid tribute to the great Philip Seymour Hoffman. There are many more in the following pages of this magazine, and I’ll let you explore them on your own.

We didn’t create this issue because we wanted to show everyone we know a great deal about the subject; we do not, and that I suppose is the reason the magazine turned out the way it did: an experimental endeavour. Which is not to say it turned out a failure. It didn’t, at least we don’t see it that way.

When I was 17, I was offered to create and host a music-based segment on the radio, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to finally say thanks to music in my own way. I realized that the beauty of music lies within getting to share it with someone else. To me, listening to good music is an unmatched experience, and to get to share it with all of you is something so beautiful.

The first ever episode aired on October 26, 2011 on a Wednesday, with the first track as a Wombworks Radio Mix of Bee Eyes' song, 'Double Sunrise'. Week after week for well over a year, I dished out handcrafted mixtapes for EWWM on the radio, and started gaining an overwhelming amount of wonderful listeners who would regularly go out of their way just to help promote the segment. You can only imagine how devastated I was when I was told by Jam to let the segment go on an indefinite hiatus. I fought hard to keep the segment on air, and a great number of you fought hard with me, but our efforts failed in trying to make it stay, and I thought that was going to be the end of that.

I did, however, figure that I shouldn't let this stop me from doing what I know how to do best, and from using EWWM as a platform to help artists get listened to more and basically just share the music I love to everyone. So another year later, I find myself writing this, happier and so much more grateful than ever.

Two years and around sixty mixtapes in, I still find it surreal when I receive messages or get approached in person by one of you and be told how this entire thing affected you, or how many of the mixtapes you have in your iPod, or how you found your mom listening to Coffee & Cigarettes, or how you perceive music differently now, stuff like that. I never thought I'd ever get invited to colleges to talk about music, nor would I have imagined I'd ever be on television, but EWWM made all those things (and a lot more) happen. I always thought that if I could just share the thing I love the most to even just one person, it would be monumental -- and to have been able to do this with all you beautiful people, in a much larger scale than I would have ever possibly imagined, it's absolutely overwhelming.

So I guess I want to take this chance to say thank you. If you've managed to somehow find yourself reading this, thank you for letting EWWM be a part of your life -- hell, just your day, even. Thank you for trusting me with your ears and for keeping an open mind. My intentions remain pure, and all I ever really wanted is to share music, and try to make people love music even more. Thank you for all the time you've spent downloading these tracks (no matter how bad your connection gets sometimes). Thank you for sticking through this entire thing with me. I never really thought this would become as big as it's grown to be, so I have each and everyone of you, anyone who's ever been a part of EWWM, to thank for that. I am grateful for every single one of you.

I'm currently moving towards making EWWM bigger and hopefully better, and already have wonderful things in store for everyone in the coming months.

Here's to more musical adventures together, and to the power of good music. I love you all.

Love, Ellie.
