Audrey says “fuck your gender roles”

This movie is super underrated.

Audrey is so underrated. How can you not love her?

I have a love-hate relationship with this movie. On one hand it’s got awesome PoC characters who defy racial and gender stereotypes. It also discusses colonialism and how people tend to destroy indigenous cultures to obtain land and resources (which is why the crew ultimately decided a to pretend they never found Atlantis because they don’t want anyone else to try and destroy the culture). But on the other hand, the whole plot is that Atlantis needs a white, cishet man to save it from extinction and for some reason he understand their culture and language better than they do.

hEY FUCK YOU OKAY MILO WAS THE ANTITHESIS OF WHITE SAVIOR HE WAS A NERDY USELESS LITTLE SHIT WHO WAS COWARDLY UNTIL OTHERS FORCED HIM TO ACT HIS ONLY STRENGTHS WERE HIS MIND AND HIS ETHICS HE WAS THE PERFECT DUDE FOR THE JOB AND THE REASON HE KNEW BETTER WAS BECAUSE HE RIGOROUSLY STUDIED TEXTS THAT HAD BEEN LOST OR DESTROYED IN ATLANTIS BECAUSE KIDA’S FATHER INTENTIONALLY LET HIS KINGDOM LAPSE INTO DECAY AND OBSCURITY DO NOT PULL THAT WHITE SAVIOUR BULLSHIT BECAUSE MILO WAS A DAMN GOOD DUDE

I’ve been trying to tell people this for years. Also, what differentiates Milo’s experience from the white savior complex is his expectation and his attitude. When looking for Atlantis, the last thing Milo expects to find are people. He says the most they thought that they would find are carvings and pottery. And he would have been happy with just that.

And even when he finds the Atlanteans, he treats the culture and people with the utmost respect (peek the scene where the crew has their audience with the king). He never tries to interfere in the people’s way of life nor change them. He’s merely an observer fascinated with the culture/people and just wants to know more about them.

In most movies, the white savior comes into the situation with an attitude of superiority and only through his interactions with the native people (and a lot of times a beautiful native woman) is he humbled and then eventually brought in as an honorary member of the people. Milo never asks for thanks or wants to make a name for himself. He does what he does because he loves it and it’s a way to keep his grandfather’s legacy alive.

Yeah. Milo was a damn good dude.

And another thing about Milo that’s made evidenced by this scene in particular? He’s got respect for women. He doesn’t ask why it’s a GIRL mechanic on the expedition, only why it’s a TEENAGER. Doesn’t question Kida’s leadership and knowledge when he meets her. (I can’t think of more examples off the top of my head but I’m sure they’re there).

Milo is a wonderful Disney protagonist, and this movie deserves the underground love it receives.

Milo doesn’t question why the second-in-comand is a woman, or the fact that the mechanic and the communications officer are women, or think of Kida as anything less than capable.

Another example of Milo showing respect for the Atlantian culture and being the opposite of the white-savior trope was when they as a group first encountered the Atlantian warriors, and he tried to speak to them in their language. He botched it for sure and tried to meet Kida in a middle ground, but he never got frustrated or wondered why they couldn’t just speak English. And Kida saw his efforts and met him halfway because she recognized that this stranger respected her people enough to at least TRY!

He respected Kida’s choices even when he was concerned for her safety, he respected her as a monarch, and he wasn’t afraid to ask for her help when his knowledge reached a few dead ends.

Milo is a shining example of non-toxic masculinity in the Disney lineup, and I will always defend my brainy boi.

Off topic PSA: Don’t adopt a dog or cat from a shelter if you’re not ready to deal with behavioral/physical issues.

A lot of people prioritize adoption with moral reasoning now for obvious reasons—you’re taking home an animal in need left behind.

However, there’s a problem that comes with all of this moral posturing: People will adopt a dog or cat and not be prepared to or want to deal with any behavioral or physical issues resulting from the animal’s past. Taking in an animal in need of a home and then giving up on it is worse than not adopting. You gave your pet a chance to live a better life and make themselves at home, then take that away. That’s confusing and upsetting for the pet.

Let me give an example. We adopted current kitties, Ivy and Daisy, when they were rescued from a neglect and abandonment situation. They were thin at first, didn’t know how to play, hid from us, and once out in the open, through they would run out of water so kept licking the sink (probably they could only get water from drops in sinks like that). Daisy is completely adjusted now even though still awkward playing and has the water issue, but Ivy can be very anxious, defensive, and vicious. She is 100% a cat most people would not want to put up with. You need to give her time and be gentle with her, then she’ll happily play and let you pet her (she is obsessed with me alone because I do this, lmao). Seeing ads for cats that are having trouble getting adopted online, almost all of them have the issues she does—and it’s OK to not adopt an animal when you know you won’t be able to deal with it, but this post is directed at people who do and then reject it.

TL;DR don’t adopt without research and preparation because you never know if you’ll cause your adopted animal more stress in the end. Of course this isn’t the case with all rescues, and it’s only directed at those who have issues their owners end up giving up on.

College/Grad School Tip: Smile at your peers while they’re giving presentations. I know that class presentations can be boring to sit through, but presentations are always hard to give even if you’re an experienced public speaker. One friendly face can make the whole crowd seem more open and help people feel more confidence. We’re all experiencing academia together, so let’s all support each other.

this is such a strong opening paragraph for an article about a medieval cookbook

Bruh it’s gonna be like nothing because poor people literally had no food

Or it’s just potatoes WHY WOUKD ANYONE WANT TO EAT LIKE A MEDIEVAL PEASANT???????? They didn’t even have SPICES

Medieval peasants grew crops and owned sheep and chickens and kept gardens to grow herbs and had ways to salt and pickle foods in a time before refrigeration and milked goats to get milk and cheese.

Stop getting all your info from Game of Thrones.

Sea otters and giant river otters are like if someone got two artists to design a giant otter, but ended up with two very different ideas on what they should look like cause one draws hello kitty fanart and the other was a nihilist.

Ok, but like… seriously.
