Back to (Net)work! Summer is amazing and we wish it would never end, but all things end, and also September is kind of the greatest month anyways. Crisp air, changing leaves, no more day camps full of children blocking the sidewalks of Brooklyn, and now: another Dealmakers!

Our next adult fiction and non-fiction event will be September 29th, and tickets are on sale like... now. Literally this moment. GO GET THEM. LIVE IN THIS MOMENT. SEE YOU THERE.

"I left Biology in my third year to study English Literature because I was horrible in laboratory assignments and I always wanted to be a writer. I’m not entirely sure what my plans are for the future because it’s an English Lit degree but I don’t want to be a teacher and I’m not good at much of...

Thanks for the shout-out, friend! This answer feels equal parts comprehensive and elegant, we have nothing to add.

If, after hearing about the Hachette/Amazon negotiations, you’re interested in seeing exactly what it means for Amazon to use their power to bully publishers, here is an upcoming Hachette title with the buy buttons (currently) removed. Want to buy a hard copy of the book? You can’t on Amazon!

(Edit: to understand why this matters, this book is currently ranked on B&N’s site as #102 – and being in the top hundred is a huge boon for visibility – but it’s on Amazon as #49,153. I don’t think Geist fans just really really love B&N.)

Happy screenshot Friday! (Screenshot Friday is a thing I just made up, right this second, but if you love me you'll pretend it's a real thing that exists in the world.)

This screenshot tells you three very important things.

  1. We are alllllllll out of editor tickets for Tuesday's speed-networking event at Housing Works.
  2. There are still agent tickets left. The screenshot doesn't tell you this but we can tell you this: There are VERY FEW left. Like, three? Maybe fewer by the time you read this, because of the way time works. The point is, if you're an agent, you should act fast.
  3. Sales are ending imminently. That's why the numbers are red. Red equals imminence, everyone knows that.

You can get tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dealmakers-a-speed-networking-event-from-the-league-of-assistant-editors-tickets-10929866525. I mean probably. Unless time has done its weird time thing and they're gone, in which case you should add yourself to the waitlist so you'll be notified 24 hours in advance about tickets for the next event.

It's a BOOK!

The League of Assistant Editors is delighted to announce a bundle of reading joy! The first Dealmakers baby, Hidden Figures, is coming soon from Mackenzie Brady, Trish Daly, and, of course, author Margot Shetterly.

Want one of your own? There are still tickets to the next Dealmakers, for YA and Children's editors and agents, on April 22nd. Listen to your ticking bibliogical clock and get a ticket today!

Get your tickets to the latest Dealmakers! If you're an editor or agent working on children's or YA books, this one's for you!

Bring an umbrella. The meteorologists are being pretty conservative with this estimate; I would say there is a 99% chance of meetballs, and a 1% chance of you being very shy and/or going very suddenly mute while simultaneously running out of business cards, due to a long-standing curse. If you're subject to a long-standing curse, maybe you won't meet anyone. If you are not subject to a long-standing curse, or are subject to a different kind of long-standing curse that doesn't preclude meeting people, this is the perfect place to talk to other YA and children's agents and editors about all the future classic books you can create together. Buy your ticket today!

Hello. Hi. I'm Hermione Granger, NOT Allyson from The League of Assistant Editors writing fanfic, and I think it's very important that you know about the next Dealmakers speed networking event, happening in April. April 22 at housingworksbookstore, write that down somewhere, you don't want to forget. It's for editors and agents who work on YA and children's books and I really think it would give you a leg up on the competition if you want to pass your publishing OWL. You didn't know about the publishing OWL? Honestly, am I the only one here who's read THE BIG FIVE: A HISTORY?

Another post about romance

Guys! Guys! (Really, this is a post for the men, specifically the men who are romantically interested in women.)

We have a hook up on tickets to I Like Your Glasses, Cover Spy's literary speed dating event on February 12 at Housing Works. Men who buy a ticket using THIS LINK and/or the discount code "QUEEQUEG" (so many Scrabble points...) will get THREE WHOLE DOLLARS off. That means $12 for a free drink and the opportunity to talk to like so so many single, female book nerds.

NB that unlike our nonromantic, totally professional speed networking events, I Like Your Glasses is about finding love, l-u-v.

This week at HWBC:

Tonight editors Debby Smith, Michael Steven Smith, and Frances Golden, will be joining some contributors from their new essay collection, IMAGINE: Living in a Socialist USA's Launch Party and Discussion.

Tuesday night’s event with Olivia Laing has been canceled due to an emergency.

On Wednesday night, Meredith Haggerty, Rebecca Harrington, Tim Manley, Paul Laudiero, Jenna Wortham, and Katie Heaney will be sharing dating stories with MC Chiara Atika at NEVER HAVE I EVER: Stories of Dating Droughts, Disasters, and More.

Finally, Aria Beth Sloss, Leanne Shapton, and Katie Kitamura with moderator Thessaly La Force will be looking at the complicated issue of “truth” in narrative on Thursday night at Real Plums, Imaginary Cake.

Also, we still have men’s tickets available for our 2/12 I Like Your Glasses: Literary Speed Dating with CoverSpy and our 2/13 dinner Love Bites: A Valentine’s Dinner Celebrating Classic Literary Lovers. Be sure to grab those before they sell out! For more info and tickets, click the links!

The League loves:

1. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe

2. Katie Heaney

3. Meredith Haggerty, League co-founder so this is a little self-love-y but Allyson is writing this post and not Meredith and Allyson's listening to Lorde and eating feta and feeling very happy about everything but especially about her awesome co-founder

4. Everyone else reading at the Never Have I Ever launch party, which you should definitely come to tonight

5. CoverSpy and I Like Your Glasses, because literary speed dating was a big inspiration for our own speed networking events

In conclusion, we have a lot of Valentines and it's only January and you should come to Housing Works tonight

Not a Snow Day Job Post!

Did you refresh nyc.gov a bunch of times this morning hoping everything would be closed and you wouldn't have to go to work? Maybe it's time for a new job. We just heard about one, go get it.

Pamela Dorman Books is looking for someone to work as both an editorial assistant and a junior editor, assisting with reading and editing, and running a small imprint.  It’s a great opportunity for someone who primarily wants to work on fiction, with a smattering of non-fiction, most of it women-oriented.  Candidates should be super-organized, detail-oriented, calm, and unflappable—and great with authors and agents, as well as people in-house.  Experience required—ideally at least a year plus as an assistant elsewhere.  More information about the imprint can be found at http://www.us.penguingroup.com/static/pages/publishers/adult/pameladorman-books.html.
If interested, please send a resume to Kiki Koroshetz at Kiki.Koroshetz@us.penguingroup.com.

Friday Job Post!

Happy Friday! We got a tip about an employment opportunity, so have a job post and a long weekend. You're right, we are too generous.

GOTHAM IS HIRING. . .
Our firm is starting a search to fill a new position with our Bookwriters Group -- Director of Business Development.
SUMMARY: Gotham Ghostwriters, New York’s only full-service writing firm, is seeking an entrepreneurial publishing professional with strong industry relationships to lead and scale up our growing bookwriting practice. This is a rare chance to capitalize on a sure thing -- or as close to it as you’ll get in today’s unsettled publishing world. Our Bookwriters Group is playing in a booming market with no real competition and, best of all, an unbeatable asset: the peerless network of more than 200 accomplished ghostwriters and editors we have built since launching the division two years ago. The reputation we have developed for delivering reliably high-quality service to the diverse universe of authors we work with -– from top CEOs and tech experts to the next generation of thought leaders looking to make a name for themselves -- doesn’t hurt either. All we need now is to find a dynamic, well connected salesperson and manager who can help us expand that brand, cultivate new sources of business, and take full advantage of our unique capacity to custom match editorial talent with authorial need. This position is ideally suited for a literary agent or publicist who is already versed in the art of smart content and eager for a new challenge with high-reward potential.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The director of business development (DBD) will work closely with the firm’s president and director of operations to: raise awareness of our Bookwriters Group in general and deepen our connections within the publishing industry in particular, identify and close new business opportunities, and manage relations with clients the DBD brings into the firm. More specifically, the DBD will be responsible for: • Formulating and executing long-term business development and marketing strategies • Meeting with literary agents and publicists, editors at major houses, and other publishing and communications professionals who could be potential sources of business • Representing the firm at major industry conferences • Organizing events to increase brand recognition • Negotiating terms and drafting contracts for clients they bring in • Serving as the first point of contact for clients under contract • Overseeing the assignment of writers to their projects QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires substantial knowledge of the publishing industry and the craft and business of writing; strong people, pitching, and relationship-building skills; and a mix of initiative, creativity, and business savvy. In addition, the ideal candidate will have: • A minimum of 3-5 years experience working in a business development capacity at a literary agency, PR firm, or major publishing house • A wide network of connections throughout the publishing industry • Excellent writing ability • Enthusiasm for working in a start-up environment
COMPENSATION: Comparable to a literary agency -- modest base salary plus commissions on all new business the DBD is directly responsible for bringing into the firm. Health insurance provided.
APPLICATIONS: If you are interested in being considered for this position, please send a cover letter and resume to: dan@gothamghostwriters.com
