Fail Better Writing

@failbetterwriting / failbetterwriting.tumblr.com

Hi, I'm Hannah! I'm an amateur writer, working on my first novel. I want to use this space for sharing my experiences in the writing process, a few bits of art work, and random stuff that I find online. Enjoy!

Encounters with Trinity

A poem and meditation by Hannah Garrison I encounter God in nature, in wooded walks and under the boughs of trees,on the shores of rivers and lakes, listeningto the chorus of creation. I encounter God in his scriptures, andthrough the people who read them. I encounter God in stillness, warmth, and comfort,in good meals and wine glasses, with glad hearts and friendly company, by crackling…

Editing Tips: Making the Most of Your Hard Copy Review

I’ve posted some updates recently on my editing process for Footfall and have gotten a few questions about how I edit my book. In particular, I’ve had some questions about why I am reviewing a hard copy. While I primarily edit electronically, I actually really enjoy reviewing hard copies of my work, both for my day job as a technical editor and for my creative writing work. It also makes me a…

Dealing with Failure

So, in my last blog post I mentioned that I had applied for the Clarion West 6-week writing workshop. Since then, I’ve learned that I was rejected. Yes, I am super bummed. Getting rejected sucks. I even applied knowing it was very likely I’d be rejected and I was still bummed when I found out. However, as that old cliched saying goes, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. This isn’t the first…

Life Updates: Writing Workshops, My Latest Reads, and Footfall

Hello all! I know it’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything. *Looks shamefully at feet* So, I’m sorry about that. March and February, unfortunately, are the busiest months of the year at my day job, which means I’m off my normal routine and don’t have much free time in my schedule. However, excuses are boring! How about I update you all on how life’s been going and what I have coming up…

Rest and Be Thankful: Meditations on A Trip to Scotland

The words were etched onto a bench, just below the Ardbeg Distillery welcome sign. David and I had been walking around Islay and were a bit cold and soaked threw after an attempt to climb a tower ruin only to scramble back down under an encroaching rainstorm. But the sun had come out on our walk back to our cottage. We approached the distillery sign and the words caught my eye: “Rest and Be…

My Top 5 Reads of 2018

2018 was one of the best reading years for me, at least since college. According to Goodreads, I’ve read 15 books (soon to be 16), which spanned a variety of genres and included traditionally published books and indie books. I thought it would be fun to count down my favorite books of the year.

Indie Spotlight: Power and Magic - The Queer Witch Comics Anthology

I met editor Joamette Gil at GeekGirlCon this past October, and when she showed me this book, I knew I wanted to dive in. Aside from the book’s beautiful cover art (by Ashe Samuels), the hook that drew me in was the common subject matter explored in this anthology. Power & Magic: The Queer Witch Comics Anthology, is all about magic. One thing I love about magic in fantasy stories is it’s ability…

A reminder to all writers

Remember to write for you. Not for your audience. The minute you stop writing for yourself is the minute that writing becomes less enjoyable and feels more like a chore. Write what YOU enjoy writing. Write something that YOU would enjoy reading. Criticism is great, but you should always take it out of a desire to be a better writer, not a desire to please your readers. You are worth writing for.

The only acceptable reason for this is if this character is actually a demon who seduces men and then eats them. [source]

You can always tell when it’s a man writing a description because they focus oddly on the breasts. There will always be something about breasts and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read historical or fantasy fiction and they talk about “her breasts hanging freely under her tunic” or what the fuck ever and it’s like…women don’t do that? We don’t describe ourselves by saying “I have blonde hair and blue eyes and my breasts hang freely under my tunic”. I kind of feel like we should counter by awkwardly mentioning all male character’s balls in their description. It’s kind of in the same vein.

“I have auburn hair and hazel eyes and my copious nicely separated balls hangs freely under my breeches”

JFC, Michaeangelo wasn’t this bad at women and his idea of “sculpt a girl” was sticking some apple-shaped tits on a body he’d modelled after a man, and at least HE had the excuse of being gay and not giving a fuck

HOLY SHIT i’ve never seen the version with the fucking drawings before

At my funeral, I’m gonna hire somebody with a scar to look over my body and audibly whisper “I should’ve been the one to finally take you out.”

Alternatively, they could also whisper “They won’t get away with this. I’m gonna finish what you started, old friend.”

They’ll have instructions to read the room and choose which they deem best fit

Beatrice and Benedict are same-sex leaning disaster bisexuals who are both extremely surprised when they end up falling for someone of the opposite sex.

hot take: beatrice saying “he hath EVERY month a new sworn brother” about benedick is her teasing him for just having an endless string of boyfriends

Yes. Good. Excellent. Just as Shakespeare intended.

YES. YES. ALL TRUE.

I would also like to add that ‘And a good soldier to a lady. But what is he to a Lord?’ is Beatrice asking for confirmation that Benedick is a bottom

David Tennant and Catherine Tate best encapsulate the bi disaster vibes each of them give

Look at these dorks

“he is no less than a stuffed man” is ALSO beatrice confirming benedick’s a bottom and you can quote me on that

So the subplot of Holes is that Kate Barlow deals with the politically-sanctioned execution of her black boyfriend—who unlawfully kissed a white woman who was in love with him!!!—by becoming a serial killer who targets racist/sexist white dudes who harassed her, were rejected, then went after her boyfriend as revenge from the depths of the “friend zone”.

Go off Louis Sachar, let em know!

Don’t forget the main plot was a damning satire of the brokenness and inherent racism of the American justice and prison systems! Louis Sachar does not fuck about

It always fuck me up that older people don’t understand how this story is as essential to most american children as Gone with the Wind or Mary Poppins was.

unironically, this is one of the best books/movies for young people that exists

Kissing Kate Did Nothing Wrong

And the technical writing of Holes is perfect. Like, it’s one of the most technically-perfect books ever written. Basically any plotting or pacing or characterization issue you’re having, read Holes and really study how Sachar did it. THE LIZARDS! THE LIZARDS.

the twisty prophecies! the lizards! the lipstick! the humor! this book doesn’t play. a true classic.
