Happy International Women's Day. Today, two guys were walking very slowly in front of me stopping multiple times to point at something in the distance. The sidewalk was narrow and snow covered each side, so I said "sorry sir excuse me" and managed my way around them. The man was like "oh I didn't even see you there" and I reassured him it was fine that I was just in a hurry. And he tells me to have a good day and then follows up, very sarcastically and laughing, with "or how CNN says I should say *holds both arms up for some reason???* Happy international women's day! Women! Feminism! Equality!" This was completely unprovoked and really out of nowhere. But thank you. I grew up in a patriarchal home. My skills were bested by boys in high school and they won awards that I felt I deserved. I felt tiny in my male dominated STEM college courses (although cheg has a large proportion of women!!!). I had my professor once tell me I shouldn't think about getting a MD PhD because I'm a women and if I wanted a family, it'd be impossible. I'm surrounded by fellow students--males who are married with children who didn't have to think twice about that choice in regards to obtaining their doctorate. A colleague once told me that because my fashion sense is important to me, I "seem too feminine" and my field won't take me seriously. I am a women. I get imposter syndrome, I'm gaslighted, I like retail therapy. I'm also a PhD student with two BS degrees who dresses really well.
