She sat down as Erwin gave her words a read, looking around the room, noting just how organised everything was. Hanji also noticed that expression on Erwin’s face, the slight frown and the little clench of the jaw, she knew her words had struck him. Maybe she wouldn’t make such a bad commander if her views were like Erwin’s, after all, he was one of the best. Hanji kept her eyes focused on his face, checking for any giveaway signs of what he was thinking.

“I haven’t told anyone but you. I knew there was no point if you didn’t think it was necessary, though of course I will continue to pester you and try to change your mind if you say no” she replied, still looking up at him to relay how strongly she felt.

Erwin let out a slow sigh as he finished reading. He closed his eyes, pressing his fingers together. Tapping his fingers on his lips, he fell into deep thought. Yes, Hanji was...persistent. She was not afraid to keep bothering him until she got the answer she wanted.

He pushed the reports toward her. "As I said, this is your mission." He said quietly, "You put together your team. You come up with the plan. And more importantly, you are responsible for any loss of your squad." He leaned back into his chair. "However, I am still your commander. I want to see your list and your plan. Understand?"

Those lips of his parted for a moment—the coffee would go stale if he did that. But, he stopped and decided to offer: “Why don’t I make a new kettle of coffee?”

Erwin smirked at the gesture. "That would be great, Levi, thank you."

"I did," Levi replied, already prepared with a defense: "The coffee went cold." He already had a chance to wash the mug out among the other dishes. It wasn’t like he will allow the mug to become stained. 

"If I was correct the cup was still pretty full. You couldn't have warmed it up on the burner?"

     ”S-Sir! Sorry!” the brunet apologized quickly, “I was looking for Captain Levi. I think he wanted me to clean some room, but I can’t be sure. I haven’t seen him around. Is he out?”

"Much to my surprise I have not seen the captain all day. He possible stepped out for a moment. Why not sit a relax."

Well, it mostly involved taking the horses out for a run and not losing any, but after someone’s prank backfired, I had to wash horse crap off the horses as well.

"T-There was a prank...Springer, please enlighten me..."

People who hate Erwin Smith and go on about how boring he is

Erwin kept staring at the girl, for a long time indeed. He could easily scold her, but she was not one of his soldiers. Slowly, he stepped out of the way. "You must be in a hurray...."

Hanji’s jaw clenched at the harsh truth, though she already had the lives of those under her orders on her shoulders. And she was sure those wouldn’t be the last that she would feel guilty for. She thought it over, in fact, she thought it over every night. “I am prepared. Research is worth the risk when the chance of finding out so much is so close”. It was tough, but even just a normal expedition had the same risk. 

. 

"Worth the risk..." He repeated so softly, only he knew what he said. How many times had he told himself that. People dying are worth the risk, as long as it advances humanity's chance to be free once again. He picked up the papers Hanji had left him. Slowly he began to read over them, only had skimmed them before. "Hmm..." He picked up his coffee and took a sip. "Has any other squad members agreed to this? Have you mentioned it to Levi or Mike?"

She looked up.

"Ah! Yes…. I seem to be lost."

Erwin cocked his head slightly, "Alright...where did you need to go? Or who are you looking for?"

Commander Erwin sir!

I already did my assigned duties for the day, sir!

"Really, now?" Erwin folded his arms, "So what did you have to do today?"

All night. All night she’d stayed up trying to find a new way to ask for permission. All night with no sleep just for him to throw them down. "Erwin, please just read through it" she practically begged, her hands on his desk as she leaned forward.

"I just want a week out the walls, try and discover more about what Ilse was talking about. If I could just find another titan like the one she encountered—"

He let out yet another sigh. It felt like Hanji was in here everyday, asking the same question. "And what would happen if you fail this mission." He said, leaving forward as he got right in Hanji's face. "Lives would be lost, and you would come home with nothing.  Are you prepared to make that risk? This is your idea, so any failure would be on your head."
