Yeah *too political*

The UK is a corrupt pile of shite.

Imagine living in a country and being told it’s “too political” to fly your own country’s flag on the day of their patron saint.

How much longer will we tolerate being treated this way?

The Saltire is literally St Andrew's Cross. Jesus fuck.

“I wish it need not happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

I don’t think there’s any quote more suitable for today (9 November 2016)

Ever wonder how big wolves are and why running from them is a really bad idea?

This had me so fucked up the first time I worked at the zoo. Because honestly they just look like big German-Huskies when they’re not wild. They look like big puppies. And then… they get close to you… And it’s suddenly kinda fucking terrifying. Like “oh this is the animal that used to scare people shitless.” “This is the animal that used to run through nightmares and poems so much.” And you suddenly fucking get it. As cool as these animals are far away, as important as the animals are in their natural environment, as much as we need them to survive… they’re still pretty fucking terrifying

can you believe these things became our friends

And then people domesticated them and now sleep with them in their beds.

We’re not a species meant to last

I’d actually argue the opposite!

We took these super efficient killing machines and befriended them and now they love and protect us as much as we (ideally) love and protect them

Cats basically domesticated themselves so that they could share in our food, medical care, and affection

In urban spaces, prey species know that there’s a higher likelihood that humans will help you if you’re stuck or injured than them killing or maiming you

It’s just, over time we see trends of our species overcoming environmental pressures that would and do lead to extinction in other species by sharing and forming close bonds with other sentient organisms and just kinda… aggressively community-bonding our way out of it?

For a long time there’s been this pervading idea that we, as a species, are just innately violent and terrible and “sinful” and it’s been that violence that let us survive (see the hunting hypothesis of human evolution). But that’s not what we see

We are, at our core, a species that looks into the face of something other, and thinks “I wonder if they want to be friends?” so long as the individual isn’t actively trying to kill us. Sure, tons of people do awful things every day, but for every terrible act or thought on this Earth, there are a dozen acts of kindness that people do casually for complete strangers

So yeah. We looked at these massive fluffy monsters with the sharp claws and crushing jaws rooting in our garbage just beyond the campfire and thought, the way no other species before or after us has done to the same extent; “They look friend-shaped!”

And they were. And that is how we got to be the dominant species on this planet

“Jock”

The BBC using the sort of language you’d expect from the Mail.

Was seriously raging when I saw this today. For my followers who don’t know, Jock is an ethnic slur that really should not be used by a mainstream media source.

Anonymous asked:

"Trying to freeze characters in particular ages/life stages is a guaranteed formula for stagnation and impactless storytelling." Sure, but aren't some life stages incompatible with being a superhero? If Peter Parker had preschool children, wouldn't it be irresponsible of him to keep risking his life fighting supervillains?

What you see as incompatible, I see as potential obstacles that can be the source of good story-telling: how do you balance being a good parent and being a good superhero? Do you see superheroing as risking your life irresponsibly or trying to make the world safe for your kids to live in? How do people with an adventure-seeking personality deal with the responsibility and tedium that comes with having kids?

(It’s almost like a metaphor for career vs. family struggles…)

And one of the ways that I know that it can be a source of good storytelling is that it’s been done before: the Fantastic Four have kids, X-Men have had kids, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have kids, Jessica Drew fought a Skrull invasion immediately after giving birth.

So no, I don’t think there are life stages incompatible with being a superhero.

And the best Spidey stories (including the second Sam Raimi flick) are all about how damn hard it is to both be a superhero and have a life.

Especially Spidey. His origin story is literally ‘horrible things happen to your family when you refuse to do good’. The level of complexity having very young children would add to that history would make for compelling storytelling.

Ravenclaws probably have, overall as a house, the worst grades in the school tbh.

I bet for the professors teaching Ravenclaws is like herding cats away from empty boxes.

Older Ravenclaws have finely honed the art of asking just the right argumentative questions to direct their teacher onto an entire-class-session-long tangent about something entirely irrelevant to the course material.

Can you imagine Ravenclaws trying to overhaul the entire school system with Muggle ideas. Trying to figure out how to best teach people, more concerned with how people learn than what they’re learning.

“Why do we force people to learn things they aren’t interested in, we should create our own curriculum.”

“We should figure out everyone’s learning styles.”

“We need smaller class sizes.”

“No, no, wait, guys, what if we eliminated grades entirely.

Yeah, Ravenclaws would drive Hermione up the wall.

“Fire the whole staff and start over.”

“Present more opportunities for seventh-year independent research!”

“Why hasn’t anyone made magically modified calculators yet?”

“Why are we still using quills and parchment when pencils exist? Please explain.” “I don’t want to enter the work force directly after school, what are my options for higher education? Is there magical university?” “I don’t feel confident in my professor’s qualifications because she’s teaching me astrology but doesn’t know any facts about space beyond about the year 1764.”

Muggleborn Ravenclaws forming rogue study groups to teach other students chemistry and algebra and English literature, just imagine.

“They call this the astronomy tower but we’re learning about the effects of Venus when it’s in the fourth house and the professor doesn’t believe Neptune is a planet I am really concerned.”

“Okay but what’s the oxidation state of Mandrake root in pepperup potion?”

“But can you apply differential calculus to arithmancy or not?“

"The portrayal of the witches in Macbeth has some pretty troubling implications, also, I don’t think their potion would have actually done anything.”

If Sandor does emerge from the QI, what do you think his endgame will be? And, while it's not exactly an important question overall, what do you think happens to Clegane Keep?

Avatar

I think he’ll serve as Sansa’s sworn sword at Winterfell. As for Clegane’s Keep, I got nothing, we shall see!

Clegane Keep is a mini-Harrenhal after all the horror Gregor has inflicted on the place. Burn it to the ground.

I really, really wish tumblr would do something about the porn spam blogs. I’m tired of just taking for granted that every new follower is actually just gross, unsolicited hardcore porn that I then have to look at if I want to block.

In 1990 they released a movie adaption of The Handmaid’s Tale to an underwhelming response. Finding a copy to watch was near impossible, it seems like everyone involved kinda wanted to forget about it. The movie it’s self was ok, there were several parts that were changed from the book presumably to add more action. Not to mention the lack of the white veils…

But lucky for us we are getting a new TV adaption in 2017!  Elizabeth Moss will be staring as Offred and with Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes joining the cast, this looks as though it will be a series to look forward to!

I’ve actually seen this film, yet somehow didn’t know that the [super gross ritual] sex scene was in the trailer.
