genuinely partially agree with the people on twitter

nobody NEEDS a pillow collection that says "live laugh love", especially when they are never used as actual pillows

it's like buying an off-road car as a farmer and keeping it in the garage to only be looked at and admired

having things with form over function in mind is a luxury problem that wouldn't be a thing in a not classist environment in which you constantly compete with everyone else about who has the perfect life

i also think that if you still disagree, you probably have lost control over your own life choices, or may have never had any

Absolutely insane lines to just drop in the middle of an academic text btw. Feeling so normal about this.

HOFAS SPOILERS, many spoilers from part 1 of the book and the bonus

because I don't see people having a "voice of reason" and I keep seeing posts like "Rhys and Nesta hate each other"/"Cassian should have taken her side" over the bonus chapter.

If you've read part 1 of HOFAS and you found out everything that Azriel and Nesta found out about the Daglan/Asteri and the Night Court involvement/legacy whatever that was with "the son of my son" and blablabla, please, tell me, how bad good is your critical thinking?

Because you bet Azriel went to Rhys and told him EVERYTHING, including how Bryce stole Truth-Teller. How there was an ASTERI/DAGLAN sleeping like a baby under the prison, under everyone's nose.

Did you also miss the part where said Asteri said they left a kill switch in Prythian and many other "seeds" of their powers? There was a question that said "have you looked beneath every sacred mountain? at their very roots?" Are you all forgetting Rhys and the other High Lords spent YEARS under one of those mountains? That Ramiel is an IMPORTANT mountain in the Night Court?

What the Asteri said shocked Azriel, you could tell from his reaction. It affected Nesta as well to the point where she told Bryce she's as bad as the Asteri.

So you think these two didn't go back home and dumped on Rhys (and Amren, and the IC) everything they learned? That Azriel hold back anything? Nesta might have, althought I doubt she did, but you bet Azriel told him EVERYTHING.

We're not gonna talk about how Bryce swore on her mate's life that she won't tell anyone about Prythian, and then 2 days later she's having a chat with the AUTUMN KING about Prythian. Like sis, you're straight up stupid at this point. Out of everyone, you tell HIM?!

So later Bryce goes back not to give back what she stole, but to ask for more. MORE. THE TROVE. And NESTA gives it to her. GIVES IT TO HER besides everything they found out about it. So yes, Nesta was stupid at that part.

But come in the bonus chapter and Rhys' breakdown.

Because man has a breakdown and take into consideration this:

  1. he has a family, a baby, if he dies his wife dies
  2. he's a High Lord in a court that comes from the bloodline of the people who defeated the Daglan and bonus points he found out the Prison should be under his rule as well.
  3. they don't have Truth Teller anymore, but they also, at that point, don't have the Trove anymore
  4. Bryce left behind her parents but Bryce is also the one who betrayed them and stole from them and at this point Rhys doesn't trust a word from Bryce's existence. From all he knows she might not give a shit about her parents and this could go two ways: 1. Bryce doesn't come back for her parents or 2. Bryce dies and The Trove gets in the hands of the Asteri setting a chain reaction that ends with the Asteri back in Prythian and wanting to kill them all

So yes, sorry babes, Rhys has EVERY RIGHT to get mad at Nesta. But more than getting mad at Nesta he was mad AT THE SITUATION AS A WHOLE. It's a normal reaction.

And Nesta's reaction? Oh babies, do you expect NESTA to be calm when someone, especially Rhys, yells at her? She's an old sister with anger issues. Trust me, she would have gone balistic on Rhys no matter what.

It's not because they hate each other, babes. It's because that's who and how they are.

Rhys, the one having to deal with a lot in order to protect not just his family but his court as well, and Nesta, the one who doesn't get shit from anyone and has anger issues.

And the "Cassian should've taken Nesta's side"?

Cassian KNOWS his mate. Nesta is not Feyre to need someone's support in an argument. Do you think Nesta would have WANTED Cassian to get in between or take her side? Cassian know what kind of relationship Rhys and Nesta have, he also knows his mate can handle Rhys or anyone else.

So no, it's very in character for him not to get between them.

You can love Nesta, you can hate Rhys. You can love or hate Nessian. But you need to admit that Rhys has his points and Nesta did wrong by giving away the Trove and that Rhys doesn't have to be okay with that.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Nesta and Rhys- Let's Talk About it

Right off the bat I want to make it very clear that I am a fan of Nesta, I was not a fan of her portrayal in ACOSF which is nothing against her character, her healing journey was poorly portrayed. I think HOFAS is just a taste of the Nesta that we have coming in later ACOTAR books, and I am excited.

So let's get to it, this is how I look at the Inner Circle, it has two parts

Inner Circle (Family)

Inner Circle (Work) I use the word employee to describe the characters, Rhys does pay them but it is mostly just to make the difference in roles more visible– I am not trying to start a workers rights debate.

Inner Circle Family: This is the love, family and friendship part of the IC. This is dinners, and joking around, solstice and fun. This is what we probably most like to think of when we’re reading about the IC. In this, Rhys and Feyre are just members of a found family that love and respect each other. They have a bit more power and sway, but ultimately they are family. This is also where we have just: Cassian, Azriel, Nesta, Mor, Elain, Amren. Just as they are.

Inner Circle Work: This is where your hierarchy comes in. This is where Rhys is the High Lord and Feyre is the High Lady. This is where the roles the others fill out come into play, and this is where Rhys and Feyre can call the shorts without question. Cassian is Lord of Bloodshed, General to the Courts Army: answers to his high lord/lady. Azriel is the Spymaster: answers to his high lord/lady. Nesta is a warrior: answers to her high lord/lady. Mor: answers to her high lord/lady. See where I am going with this? Family and work are separate.

When the different members of the IC are in their role as "employees" of the NC, they answer to Rhys and Feyre, and follow the commands of Rhys and Feyre, High Lord and High Lady of the Night Court. If they choose to not, there are consequences.

So in HOFAS Nesta gives the Mask to Bryce, who brings it back to Midgard to save her world. Is Nesta wrong? Morally, absolutely not. In the sense of what her High Lord has asked of her as a warrior and "employee" of the NC? Yes she is wrong. She put the NC, and everyone in it, including people she loves, in danger.

(Her trust in Bryce would be a whole other post.)

So yes, Rhys, as High Lord and Protector of the Night Court, is f*cking pissed because Nesta gave away a weapon to someone they barely know, to go take on other worldly monsters who could easily take the mask and not only come back and kill everyone Rhys loves and cares for in the NC, but also in Prythian. Nesta went against orders, as "employee" of the NC, and disobeyed her High Lord. He’s not mad at his sister-in-law, he is mad at one of his warriors/employees. His reaction and anger is justified at that moment.

Misogyny: dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.

This is also where I am going to point out that this is not misogynistic because Rhys is mad at a member of his IC for making a poor choice that could have horrible consequences, not because she is a woman. He was furious with Azriel when Az fought him on having feelings for Elain. He gets mad when his employees don't follow orders.

We have seen Rhys and Feyre make decisions because they are High Lord/Lady, and their choice was final. In ACOSF, when Azriel said he was going out spying on Koschei, both Rhys and Feyre said no. Az says he wasn’t asking, challenges Feyre, and Rhys shuts him down because the High Lady said no. Is Az happy? No. Feyre then walks off with him, clearly comforting him, but he ultimately respects the call of his High Lord and Lady.

We have also seen Rhys using his status as High Lord in murky areas, such as in the infamous BC of ACOSF. When Rhys catched Azriel with Elain, he forbids Az from pursuing a relationship with her. Az points out that as a High Lord he can’t dictate that. Rhys counters this with all the political reasons why he can, but realistically he crossed the line of family IC and work IC. Is Azriel going to listen to Rhys? No because his High Lord cannot command who his "employees" love.

And I am not saying I liked reading a scene of Rhys biting Nesta’s head off, I did like reading Ember coming to her rescue and biting off Rhys’, he needs that to happen more. The point is that both characters are acting out and butting heads. That’s normal in both work and family matters. There wouldn’t be a story if Rhys (who we all forget is morally grey btw) goes “Oh well shoot Nesta, I am upset you did that but that’s ok it will work out.”

Tidbit I can’t fit anywhere: I really wish we did see more of a bite from Cassian when Rhys was biting her head off, General or not, Nesta is his mate, and letting Rhys yell at her is not mate energy. The whole scene between Rhys, Nesta, Cassian and Feyre could be its own BC.

Nesta is a complicated character, who deserves her own trilogy to shine in a way that ACOSF did not let her. HOFAS showed the other side of her, the side that was able to snap out of a death trance when she heard the name of her nephew (I felt that so hard.) When she was able to forgive someone who was complicit in her confinement to the HOW, how she was able to see beyond what had been commanded of her and make her own choices.

Nesta is an excellent character, and SJM is working hard to bring out the best in her.

At the end of the day as well we all need to remember that THIS IS A MAKE BELIEVE STORY WITH MAKE BELIEVE PEOPLE AND NONE OF THIS MATTERS! These books are literally like cocaine for our overworked, dopamine searching brains.

"Why are these child protagonists the ones who have to save the world??" Because it's written for children.

"Why are all these immortal vampires interested in teenagers??" Because it's written for teenagers.

Seriously. If your problem is with the ages of the characters, then read/watch stuff made for adults.

i agree in principle but the problem is that

  1. all the big name shit made for adults is incredibly exhausting stories about Hard Men Making Hard Choices. im all for tragedies but the tragedy of being a middle class white man who beats his wife is the only tragedy being told in today's popular culture. and anything NOT like that is probably like, a crime procedural? copaganda.
  2. anything NOT like that is VERY HARD TO FIND. nobodys talking about other shit. algorithms hide it from you. you have to dig and dig and dig and frankly thats an unfair expectation to put on someone. thats a second job just to find good shit to wind down with after your First job
  3. and if you DO find something you like thats for adults, not just What If A Man Hated His Wife And Killed People But Felt Bad About It or It Is Your Duty To Suck Every Pig Off To Completion, then who are you gonna talk about it with? an important part of art is talking about it with others. do you have people itching to watch sex in the city with you? probably not!!!

really the only option these days to find good shows (movies are a LITTLE better) not made for kids is to organize a media club of friends and watch things made before the year 2007.

and then guess what? thats another obligation. its a FUN obligation. a DELIGHTFUL obligation that enriches your life. but its still time that is no longer your own. and that is still stressful in its own way.

i really wish it was as simple as "just watch stuff made for your age demo lol" but it really isnt that simple anymore. everything under the sun these days, at least everything with any modicum of a budget, has been watered down to appeal to the lowest common denominator and/or emulate popular stories. the three genres that exist in todays zeitgeist for the most part are Marvel Movie, Breaking Bad, and What If Horror Was, Like, Smart, Unlike The STUPID Stuff From Before That We're Better Than Now <3

No offense but I think you really need to get yourself to a library and discover the Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction sections. I promise you, stories that are written for adults and fall outside the very narrow categories you've outlined exist, are still actively being created, and they aren't that hard to find. They exist in television and movies, too, I really can't take this kind of complaint seriously because what it says to me is that you never tried very hard to look.

I would suggest looking into fantasy shows if you want something that is a fun time and is written for adults and is neither Marvel nor Breaking Bad nor Pretentious Horror. Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time come to mind! Or if you aren't into fantasy/adaptations but want something with fun crime elements and excellent character development and found family vibes that isn't copaganda, give Leverage and Leverage: Redemption a try. (Both created and aired well after 2007!) For original science fiction that isn't afraid to be its own thing, ignore the haters and go watch Rebel Moon on Netflix! If you're looking for queer quasi-paranormal vibes, Sense8 deserved a whole lot more but they were still able to get two seasons and a movie post-cancellation to wrap up dangling plot threads! Galavant is a fun time that only got two seasons but it's a fantasy musical parody made with genuine love for what it is parodying and a whole lot of heart!

I could go on by doing a few minutes of digging--this is literally just what sprang off the top of my head. If none of those things interest you, then go look for other genre fiction--it's out there, it's not all Marvel or Star Wars clones, it's certainly not all 'exhausting tragedies', and a lot of it has dedicated pockets of fandom it's not that difficult to find if you go looking! (Does it suck that streaming services, especially the big ones like Netflix, have such a habit of making good shows and then killing them after one or two seasons? Yes, yes it does. But it doesn't mean those good shows don't exist or have dedicated fans or are all that hard to find.)
