burning man 2023 explained

  • burning man is a festival for rich white people who want to smoke weed and trip acid in the nevada desert and pretend they're one with the earth. it's not a music festival or anything that serves any purpose, it's just vibes
  • a hundred year flash flood just hit nevada, including where burning man is being held this very weekend
  • dry desert ground can't suddenly absorb water, let alone that much water all at once, so now burning man is a giant mud pit with THICK deep mud
  • nobody can get in or out, so they closed all the roads
  • FEMA just told the *73,000 PEOPLE* stranded at burning man to shelter in place, ration food and water, and essentially "you're on your own, good luck"
  • the port-o-potties are overflowing into the mud they're all walking around in
  • the official CDC twitter account tweeted (and then deleted) that there's a confirmed ebola outbreak at burning man, but people are pretty sure it's just trench illnesses. like actual WWI trench illnesses
  • earlier this week, climate activists protested against burning man, and all the attendees drove right past them (and yelled at them, and tried to get them arrested, etc)
  • there's a private jet at burning man where people can join the mile high club. it just takes off and lands all day and lets people fuck in it. no word yet on the fuck plane's current status/location

and lastly: when the ground here gets wet, the sea monkeys hatch

Legit question for OP: Let’s say you work some middle-class IT office job and save up $600 to buy a ticket and fly overseas for vacation. (Anywhere in the world you want to go most, idk, take your pick.) Plenty of childless people in their late 20s are lucky enough to find good jobs and are able to save that much. My point is you don’t have to be anywhere close to a millionaire to save up 600 bucks, even though I guess that’s how we of little means often see things. Anyway, while on your way to the airport, you happen to see some protestors who are picketing airline carbon emissions; they inform you that your flight will contribute to the airline industry’s yearly 1 billion tonnes of carbon waste. You feel a bit bad, but pass them by. If your plane then got stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere and you got really sick, would you say you “deserved” it? Was it karma? Meanwhile, a private jet soars above you.

Well —

I know a close family friend in his mid 50s who works as a civil engineer / urban planner on the west coast. He’s an aging nerd who collects old IBM computers and model trains. The man has also gone to Burning Man several times (though not this year). He doesn’t “glamp” — he puts up his own tent and it’s amazing to see him set up the frame, tie the knots, and set the stakes, just like his dad taught him to do on countless camping trips when he was young. To me, a lost art. You could say it’s cringe and wasteful for him to go to Burning Man, but that’s true of a lot of things that someone in a wealthy imperialist country can do, whether it’s going to Burning Man or Disneyland.

I want to laugh at rich people getting karma. I don’t particularly want to imagine Jim’s feet swelling with water and erupting into bacteria-infected sores as he wades through mud outside his tent. In reality it’s not the rich who are getting those horrible diseases — they’re lounging around in their luxury campers with private latrines — it’s probably the people who brought small tents or applied as volunteers in order to get into Burning Man for free. And that’s the tragedy, isn’t it, that the rich can always find a way to escape even in these situations where we believe we can laugh at victims of conspicuous consumption. This catharsis, the righteous cleansing flood, is a fantasy. Like always, a natural disaster washes away only the most vulnerable in its sea of shit. And yet we laugh.

The sea monkeys are finally awake. Are you?
