I think it’s time for us to all collectively return to the library. Get a card, go to a club meeting, volunteer on an off day, rent some equipment. You don’t even have to read a book. But since the digital world is rapidly becoming a subscription-only hellscape requiring a criminal amount of private personal information to use even CASUALLY, the library has become our last safe haven to just exist with information present and not have our labour or information exploited for money.

Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology

by Ellen Ullman

a while back I made a post along the lines of "every STEM major should have a required 'history of science' course that's just all about previously wrong and bad scientific theories like sperm all containing homunculi and spontaneous generation" and I got a lot of responses like "but STEM majors already have gen ed requirements!" and would not understand why I was specifically asking for a course that would teach people about why science is not infallible and does not exist in a vacuum and THIS IS EXACTLY WHY ACTUALLY

everyone needs to reconcile with the fact that taylor actually felt insane and like she should be in an asylum and she actually felt like dying. ofc in hindsight she can see that all of it hyperbolic, but these are not just metaphors. it was true in the moment. she’s also tired of the public image of a good girl because she inflicted that on herself and that hindered her from growing, and public inflicting this image on her is also hindering her, and she hates that. she wants to make mistakes and learn on her own and she has reconciled with the fact that she’ll have to live with herself and live with regret because she chose to do it. she thinks she’s fucked up because she is! and she wants the public to see it! (even though now i think she’s trying to un-fuck herself)

im sure lots of people will listen to TTPD and discount it because she talks about matty in it (and ofc people have their valid issues with him, but im not gonna go into that), but the whole lead up to the album has been “we’re investigating,” and imo a lot of us took that as her saying “we’re investigating why her relationship ended” whereas the album is actually about “we’re investigating this caricature of a girl who went through something life-changing, and she has apparently gone crazy” and she’s basically done a public autopsy of herself; something that the media/fans/public have done since the beginning, but this time around she was like “i’ll do it to myself.”

hence, the album aesthetic feels so sterile too imo. she’s trying to distance herself from the subject but!!!!!! she is the subject. and in conclusion, i think what she’s really putting down is “the summary of the investigation of this girl is that she went insane because of what happened to her, but it’s hopefully gonna be okay”

sidenote: i think what we need to take away from the album is to… let her live…

Isnt it weird that hotel rooms provide toilet paper, tissues, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, and ive even seen some provide make removal wipes, but I’ve never seen a single one provide pads or tampons?

Russian-speaking twitter had a huuuuge discussion about that last month I think, it was crazy how angry men were after just reading this question.

The arguments against varied from “hotels can’t afford it” to “you should plan your periods women, you have apps for that” to “but what if men eat tampons by mistake” (what???)

It really blew up and as far as I know quite a few workplaces began to put pads and tampons in office toilets. Hopefully hotels will too.

Yeah i just thought about it when i saw make up wipes in the hotel i stayed in the other day. Like make up wipes are very much something men could accidentally eat yet they are okay to provide but not pads??

Men will see a hypothetical hotel tampon and eat it

men will see a tampon and say is anyone gonna eat that and not wait for an answer

A while ago I told someone that I was feeling fragile, and it occurred to me that this is a very distinctive emotional state for me and I can’t be the only one who feels it and it might even have an actual name.

Fragile is the feeling that if anything happens, it will be a bad thing I will not be able to cope with, and therefore the best thing to do is to avoid all possible situations that would obligate me to react. It’s distinct from anxiety: anxiety is “something bad is going to happen” and fragile is “things happening is inherently painful”. Anxiety can be made better by a kitten appearing or my friend calling or getting an unexpected nice piece of feedback; all of those things make fragile worse. Fragile usually feels like it would be fixed by a months’ withdrawal to a pocket dimension with nothing but a cozy library.

the physical experience is something like feeling heavy, small, and lightheaded. I tend to feel fragile when I’m some combination of anxious, stressed, exhausted, and disconnected from my usual coping mechanisms.

Happy Ides of March, everyone!

Never forget that Caesar saying "et tu, Brute?" was loosely translated by Shakespeare from the Greek phrase "kai su, teknon", (which literally translates to English as "you too, child").

Never forget that the phrase "kai su" has also been found on curse tablets (and a famous mosaic), and that it's highly debated how Caesar might have been using it.

Never forget that, rather than saying a poetic phrase to Brutus (a man Caesar had seen like a son) about how he might find a similar fate someday as he was stabbed,

he could very well have instead been saying something closer to "see you in hell, punk."
