And lol don’t worry you’re not wrong, Sakupyon DOES voice three characters in here in the same group. :D But I’m glad Sakurai reprises his role as Ryoichi again since the last time he voiced him in the special election short anime 2012.

Aaaah?! Namikawa-san is doing Joshua?! And Murase-san as Ren?! (Do I have enough room on my phone for this?! I should've gotten more storage space...)

Voltage Inc. International Contest

Just a little rant, because honestly, I am so disappointed in the results. I am not disappointed, because I did not win. I am disappointed, because NOBODY won in ANY category. I am 100% sure all the other scriptwriters and illustrators put so much effort in their application to create something amazing, so why? I am certain we weren’t all that bad, because there are many amazing writers and illustrators here! And even the prize money has changed drastically. What’s the meaning of creating a contest in the first place if those are the results? I really hope we’ll get a statement. And a tiny part of me still hopes this is a terrible mistake.

But the honorable mentions are really amazing, so congrats to those people!

I hate to say it’s not a mistake and we probably won’t get any statement, but this is something they have done in the Japanese side of the contests as well. So I wouldn’t really say it’s even abnormal. This is just an unfortunate way Voltage goes about their contests where if they don’t absolutely love something to pieces, they are content to reward no one.

Just kind of a heads up for people interested in participating the next time the contest comes around. I hope people don’t get too down on themselves for there being no prizes rewarded for most of the categories - if that happened in a category you entered, it doesn’t mean what you did wasn’t good enough. It just means that Voltage was looking for something specific and they didn’t find it. This doesn’t mean you are bad or untalented.

I do still disagree with the way they go about rewarding though. I think it’s incredibly discouraging, and I don’t really feel like it sends a good message either.

I really hope they put in more info of what they want to see in the future.

They should really define what kind of content they need… This contest happened at least once in the past, and while all of the entries were amazingly stunning, nobody really won. I don’t think they put anything terribly specific either, and (if I remember correctly) their statement about the results was simply “not what we were looking for.”

They never put what they want specifically and you’re correct Kayla that the same thing happened last year for the International area.

Just please @officialvoltageotome tell those who are judging to put what they really want, it makes it easier for both sides.

As an FYI, this is a pretty common thing in creative Japanese contests. Many of them have no winner, and they will explicitly state that they reserve the right to do that in the terms. Even if many entries are amazing, if they don’t find exactly what they’re looking for, no one wins. And sometimes they don’t even know what they’re looking for until they see it. Merely amazing works won’t win; it truly has to blow them away for one to win a prize. (Of course, some of the finalists still get contacted for jobs from time to time.)

The cynic in me says it’s just so they can lure people in with prize money and then save it by not giving awards. The realist says that’s just how it is, and how it has been for ages. As we say here, 仕方ない.

Given that every entry becomes the property of Voltage upon submission (it’s in their terms & conditions, which you should always read before entering any sort of creative contest like this), I’ve always felt a bit iffy about their competitions anyway. Legally, there’s absolutely no reason why you as an artist need to surrender your copyright when you enter a contest. At most, you may be required to allow the competition organisers to use your entry for promotional or other purposes for a limited time. If Voltage wants you to forgo all future rights to your work as a condition of entry, you should be asking yourself why. What do they intend to do with your work?

The fact that they then decide (rather conveniently and for the second year in a row) not to award a grand prize winner in any category just makes it seem that much more shady to me.

Again, true for the US (and maybe other places), but a pretty normal business practice here. Not saying it's right, by any means, just that it's what's typically done in contests in Japan. Copyright law here is a whole different beast than what I'm used to in America (so different that I should probably do more research on it before creating things), and generally you give your rights to a company when you enter a contest. In practice, that seems to mean very little (meaning companies don't actually use the work other than publishing it to announce the winners, at least from the companies I've seen), but for those who aren't used to it or that have been exploited by that kind of clause in other countries, it can seem like a big deal.

It’s a lot of work taking those university exams!! > < Even Professor is shocked!

Even high school entrance exams are hard work. Take it from the teacher that stayed up all night making English practice tests for her third year students...

A guide to Otome spots in Japan

So you’ve entered the supposed holy land. So many things to do, how to plan? I’ll just give some tips and hot spots to visit, based on my few trips over. Bear in mind I haven’t visited every one of the supposed spots but I’ll try my best to give an overall view to make the most of your time.

Sendai's Animate Cafe tends to be walk-in on weekdays, though the line forms early in the morning. That said, I've won every lottery I've entered for a weekend cafe spot there! Much easier than Tokyo.

Recycle shops are the best for like-new games, books, and merch. I have a ManSaiDo near my apartment, and it's amazing (there aren't many in Japan, though).
