LOCS DO NOT HAVE AN “ UGLY PHASE ”- Yannie The Locologist
Blessings Loc Kings and Loc Queens, there’s a word people use to describe their locs that confuses me to this day when I hear it and that word is UGLY. At past events I’ve spoken at, I’ve mentioned that growing up in Trinidad and born into the Rastafarian culture, there were no “phases of locs”. If there were ever phases back then it will be your Locs were short then they grew long, and that was it. NO ONE ever used the word UGLY to describe their locs when it started locking. I hear so many people (especially those now starting their loc journey) using the word and it amazes me.
The “beginning” stage of your loc journey is THE MOST beautiful part of the process. You get front row seat to admire nature at its finest. You’ve decided to stop combing your hair and you get to watch your hair tangle strand by strand. You view the process of all the strands becoming one as they create each individual and unique loc.
Each and every one of your locs are unique in themselves because no two locs are the same. You are also unique because no other person on earth would have locs exactly like yours. That my friends, is PURE BEAUTY and all you need is PATIENCE. It’s NOT UGLY.
Do some of you use the word UGLY so you can justify the reason you’re locking your hair to your family, friends and yourself? When you stand in front of your mirror every day, do you really see ugliness? Allow nature to play its part in creating the new DNA that’s your hair/locs, and stop letting folks make you think that your locs are UGLY and stop convincing yourself that it’s UGLY.
EMBRACE YOUR NEW GROWTH, EMBRACE YOUR JOURNEY AND EMBRACE YOUR LOCS. The caterpillar doesn’t sleep in its cocoon and say “damn I’m going through the UGLY phase”. Why? Because it already knows what’s it’s going to turn into. Just some food for thought.
