there's probably nothing inherently morally wrong with seeking safety and comfort and pleasure but we live in a world where those things are distributed extremely unequally and idk about anyone else but I feel an ethical responsibility to do everything in my power to change that, even if it means making myself unsafe or uncomfortable when my responsibility to other human beings requires it. if genocide is not a situation where you feel a sense of responsibility and urgency that outweighs your instinct to seek temporary nervous system relief, what are you actually living for? and have you tried seeking out endorphins from taking action and building solidarity and learning about the world around you, instead of fucking brand loyalty?

yes we need to take care of our needs. but if you're so very fatigued from being so very compassionate, how exactly is buying something from a company complicit in genocide going to help you emotionally recharge? how is reading the writing/playing the games/watching the shows of fascists and genocide deniers going to refuel you? why would you "take care of yourself" in a way that harms others when you have other abundant options? yes we all need rest, but wouldn't you actually sleep better knowing that you're doing everything you can possibly do?

And this is why I sleep instead of actively engaging with media anymore.

I'd rather not cause harm so I just don't really try and watch new things. It's just not worth it to me like...

I'd rather use my energy for good and honestly all the new media is either depressing, problematic, or both.

Which sounds so bitchy and whiny but honestly I just would rather not risk it and waste my time.

I get where you’re coming from but I also want to clarify that I’m talking specifically about targeted boycotting, not just avoiding shitty media altogether. there will always be discourse on this website about whether it’s ok to engage with “problematic” media and what “problematic” even means; I won’t share my thoughts on that because it’s really not relevant. the purpose of cultural boycotts isn’t punishing people for being problematic, or trying to sanitize the cultural landscape. the primary purpose of these boycotts is to damage the genocidal entity’s economy and public image by making it unprofitable for artists to support/collaborate with.

someone could make the most perfect radical revolutionary art ever but if they’re using their platform to promote genocide, they’re still a legitimate boycott target. when I talk about harm here, I’m not talking about the more diffuse harm that media can cause in how it shapes our views of the world, ourselves, and others. I’m talking about the very direct immediate harm of supporting a genocidal colonial apartheid state by contributing to its economy and/or defending its genocidal actions. when we conflate the first idea with the second, it confuses the conversation by bringing in all the baggage of Tumblr Problematic Media Discourse (TM). this allows zionists to damage boycott efforts by framing it as censorship or cancel culture, and it encourages people to remain apathetic and cynical because they believe boycotting would mean disengaging from everything they enjoy, not just a few key targets. I see a lot of people mobilizing arguments from the problematic media discourse playbook to shut down boycott efforts, whether it’s by saying that boycotting is totalitarian censorship, or that lots of other media is problematic and we’re focusing too heavily on zionism, or that it’s possible to engage with problematic media non-problematically, or that specific boycott targets are actually super unproblematic. so I want to make it clear that those arguments are irrelevant because the boycotting conversation is not the problematic media conversation

Keep in mind northern Gaza has been isolated for months and people there have been made to starve with no access to water or adequate aid. This is one example, another example was Israel shooting and killing Palestinians who were attempting to get aid when it did arrive in the area. Not to forget the insane scene of unhinged Israelis literally blocking aid trucks from entering Gaza, some saying that this war is only lasting this long because aid keeps going in....

My father was martyred by Israel on 10 October 2023 after sacrificing his care in hospital so the injured children could take priority. Today would have been his 60th birthday. He was always selfless, kind, and giving for others. My father gave up everything for me to be able to have a better life, because that is what he always dreamed for me and my sister. The world suffered a great loss when he died, and my heart is always with him and every Palestinian who has lost someone.

In his honour and memory, I would love for anyone who is able to do so to consider donating to The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

The PCRF is an amazing organisation that does so much for those in Gaza right now, including helping provide food, water and medicine. You can donate any amount you are able to- there is no minimum! My father would have given his very last cent if he saw the way Palestine was continuing to suffer after over 100 days with this limited aid, so I know celebrating him by helping others is the least he would have wanted.

I saw @parrot-parent do a very successful donation match and I thought it was such a good idea so I will also match all donations up to $500! If you feel comfortable sending me proof of the amount of your donation, I will match it as a donation at the end of February. (My messages are set to mutuals only, but if you donate and we aren’t mutuals if you send an ask with the proof I will make sure to answer it privately.)

They have a Gofundme set up at the moment, but because of Gofundme’s poor track record regarding refusing to transfer funds to Palestinians, I’d recommend continuing to donate directly to their PayPal here.
