I can’t believe we’re announcing this and I can’t breathe, but we’re opening for our favorite band in the whole world, the @descendents on August 4th at @fillmorenc. I really don’t know what else to say that isn’t just me gushing about how much I love this band. 😱😱😱 (at The Fillmore Charlotte)

It's with unfathomable sadness that I find myself writing this... Chris Avis passed away yesterday. He had just left with I'm Glad It's You to join them on tour, driving towards Salt Lake City for the first show, when their van was involved in an accident. Chris was thrown from the van and didn't survive. One member of the band and their merch guy were hospitalized, but both are expected to make full recoveries. The rest of the band were relatively unharmed.

Anyone that ever met Chris Avis knows that his generosity, kindness, and gentle spirit cannot be encapsulated in meer words. He was the person you'd do anything for, knowing full well he'd do absolutely the same for you. His passion for music made him a staple of our community and his Cavis Tapes project was the embodiment of that love and desire to support musicians he respected. Just as would be expected from someone with such a massive heart for others, Chris also poured himself into basketball, coaching for his beloved Bakersfield High School Drillers, where he had also played. Those that were lucky enough to know Chris - as a friend, coach, mentor - will undoubtedly carry his memory forever. As cliché as it sounds, he truly was one of a kind.

As we've grappled with exactly how to process the loss of someone so suddenly that we love so much, we found ourselves grasping for positive ideas to honor Chris, just as he would want us to do. From that, and after conferring with his family and coach at BHS, we've launched a GoFundMe to raise money for the Bakersfield High School Drillers athletics program. If we can make one good thing happen from something so painful, this would be exactly what Chris would want. If you knew him, saw him frequently at shows, or simply watched his videos online, please consider giving in Chris's name.

To all those sharing in our deep loss right now, we love you and hope you find the strength to deal with this unbelievable tragedy. It's said often, but hug those you care about and make sure they know how you feel.

With all the love and respect we can offer, Joey, Sean, and all the 6131 Family

After some discussion, we’ve decided to take a slightly different approach than previous years this Record Store Day. We feel the original spirit of RSD has been lost and instead of doing a big sale or offering something special through our webstore, we would rather encourage you to visit your local record stores. We genuinely love visiting record stores all over the world and this day should be about celebrating and supporting those who’ve made our lives as music lovers that much better. Also, this isn’t about condemning our pals doing sales… they’re great people too and deserve your support. We just thought it might be cool to encourage folks to visit stores today instead of buying something from us. Thanks and Happy Record Store Day! ❤️
