midnights is not a breakup album and it isn't a love story album midnights is a life story album and the only thread tying the songs together is the character of taylor herself and her growth and falls and lessons and struggles throughout the course of her life. i guess anyone can read into it whatever they want to but to me it does a disservice to taylor to ignore her first words about this album being a concept album. the stories of sleepless nights scattered throughout the course of her life. the tie-ins that people are making between songs that are about the past and how they apply to joe, in my opinion, are actually tie-ins about how they apply to her in the present day. it's an album about her. not her relationship.

perhaps a hot take to reveal but the primary reason i started following taylor is because she does have such an uncanny ability to write her own narrative. she is the mastermind and she is calculating and strategic. she studied the rise and fall of artists before her, and it shows. she loves a phoenix metaphor, "i rose up from the dead, i do it all the time." "everything is copy," as nora ephron famously said. everything is a story, "for me, it is a movie now." are you not entertained?
