I’m posting this every Wednesday.
In cities around America, thousands of construction companies, restaurants, and other businesses are bracing for “A Day Without Immigrants,” a combination boycott/strike that highlights the contributions of immigrants to U.S. business and culture.
The movement is a response to President Trump’s immigration agenda, which includes a pledge to seal the U.S. border with Mexico, and a travel ban on citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries (which is now on hold).
Some businesses are closing for the day; others are staying open and pledging to contribute a share of the day’s proceeds to non-profits that aid Latino communities. In a number of cases, business owners are abiding by their staffs’ wishes, after holding votes to decide whether to open.

if you’re not sure what to do, want to contribute but you’re feeling unsure of how to stay socially and politically involved, refer to these sources to help you out. there’s no such thing as too young, too old, not politically savvy enough (clearly), too remote an area. stay woke, stay active, stay involved in any way possible. i would suggest creating a separate email account. commit to doing at least something. stay involved! don’t exclusively post to social media about the state of the u.s., you can actually strive to participate, strive to contribute to your community and to help those who are suffering.

Hey, my fellow Americans! Do you like the ACA (also known as Obamacare), and would rather it get fixed up rather than “repealed and replaced"— when Republicans haven’t even bothered to offer a decent replacement? Then call Speaker Ryan’s office at 202-225-0600 and press 2. Listen to a short spiel about how bad the ACA is, and then press 1 to support ACA!
Our end goal is 2020, which is the next census and when state legislatures redraw the lines.
The first thing that needs to happen, is we need to organize at the local level. Campaign hard to bring progressives to your local school board and city council. Then make sure your state house and senate is liberal. Put your energy there so that when 2020 comes, we can redraw the lines to favor Democrats. This is precisely the strategy Republicans have been doing for decades. This is part of why Trump won yesterday.
We just lost a terrible battle, but the war is going to be the ground up. Be Leslie Knope and believe in your local government. Start the change there.
And don’t discount direct action. Emma Goldman should be your other patronus. Bring the fight to them.
