The Nightmare King

@thewaitingshadow / thewaitingshadow.tumblr.com

Where shadows dim with shadows mate
In caverns deep and dark,
Where old books dream of bygone days
When they were wood and bark,
Where diamonds from coal are born
And no birds ever sing,
That region is the dread domain
Ruled by the Shadow King

He took a long breath before answering. “…I am not at liberty to say.”

"Oh. Well… I’m glad you’re back." She nodded towards him politely, still smiling. "Though I guess ‘back’ is kind of a weird way to put it, isn’t it? You go everywhere, don’t you?"

"No.. I think 'back' is accurate. There is no denying that I have been kept from the world."

He edged away from her movement. “Don’t make me take it back.”

Rapunzel laughed, staying in place. “Alright, alright… So. Where were you, anyway?” Her expression changed from amused to curious quickly, brows raised.

He took a long breath before answering. "...I am not at liberty to say."

He gave her an odd look. “Don’t tell me you actually missed me.”

"Missed you?" Rapunzel looked away, laughing. "Oh, no, no… That would be silly, wouldn’t it?" She paused, shooting him a smile. "Well. Maybe a little.

Cue the raise of an eyebrow. Not sure how to react to this... "Really? Perhaps I hadn't been doing my job properly."

"Too long." he turned to her. "Freedom never tasted so good."

"Where have you been, anyway?" Rapunzel approached him idly, both hands linked behind her back. "I’m guessing no where fun, but…” She frowned, once more stopping in her tracks when she was a polite distance from him. “You seem to be okay. I’m glad.”

He gave her an odd look. "Don't tell me you actually missed me."

Pitch took a deep breath of the chill air. It had been too long. The night sky glittered above him, cold and dark, and no sign of the moon tonight. It was wonderful. Turning his head at a small sound, he asked, “Just who might you be, hiding from me?”

"Who said I was hiding?" The brunette stood a few years away, her ever present smile turning almost amused. "I was out for a walk.” It always seemed to be on accident when she ran into Pitch. “It’s been a while!”

"Too long." he turned to her. "Freedom never tasted so good."
