In all seriousness, my mum definitely influenced me hugely. She opted my twin sister and me out of wearing school uniform (we were 2 out of 3 kids in the entire school who wore our own clothes) because she wanted us to form our own individual identities. She bought me a toy building set and a trunk full of plastic dinosaurs when I decided that I would be an archaeologist at 5 years old. She refused my school’s decision to move me up a year because she thought it was more important that I learnt to socialise with my peers, and I thrived academically because I was more competent socially. She threw a birthday party for my favourite doll, complete with a cake, in the carpark of my favourite museum (a gnome museum) because I was so excited for my own birthday but it wasn’t for 2 months. She let me quit ballet when I was 14 and I stopped loving it; I regret quitting now, but she let me make that decision for myself. She refused to let people buy my twin and I joint birthday presents or cards, and insisted that we were recognised as individuals rather than two halves of a whole. She argued with strangers who harassed her in public and one of my earlier memories is going to the police station with her after a man slapped her at a car boot sale because he called her a bitch and she retaliated.
And she sometimes carries our cat around the house, crooning ‘who’s a little titty head? You are!’ into his ear, and she takes photos of every sausage she eats and puts it on Facebook with the caption ‘a nice big one’, and I am glad and genuinely so grateful that she’s the weirdo who raised me.
