Writing Tag Game

Woops, I totally forgot that @schattengerissen tagged me on this. 😅

How many works do you have on AO3?

17.

What’s your total AO3 wordcount?

43,496.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

  1. More than Fun
  2. Sleep
  3. Stay
  4. Soul Stealer
  5. Warmth

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Of course! It's nice to show my appreciation to people who took the time to comment.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I generally write positive endings. There is more angst in some unpublished fics, but of the current ones, Silence for the emotional weight.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

More than Fun. It's the beginning of a new relationship.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Nope.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Some. m/m I've been moving away from it in recent fic editing, however.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I'm aware.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope. I don't think I would do well, to be honest. I'm not a very disciplined writer, which wouldn't be fair to a partner.

What’s your all time favourite ship?

Well, if this is only about my writing, I'd have to say my Dragon Age: Inquisition pair, Judah/Dorian. But otherwise, Kai/Dorian, by @schattengerissen (Schattenriss on AO3) . They really are a fantastic power couple.

What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

A currently untitled AU fic with my same DAI pair. It answer the question: what if they had known each other when they were young?

What are your writing strengths?

Angst. Perspective and perception; that is, I think I do well in describing how a character perceives things in a given moment.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Dorian. lol... Generally, I would say humor and snark, mainly because I don't think that way.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

It's not something I would do, as I only know English. As a reader, I think it should be used sparingly, for a sprinkling of flavor, so as not to alienate readers. Heck, I get annoyed with the French lines in Jane Eyre.

If there is a reason to drop in another language, I would use some description, such as:

"Line of dialogue," he said in Language.

I wouldn't use a real language unless I could consult with a speaker to ensure I got it correct -- Google translate only goes so far. Since I write in a fandom with fictional languages that aren't fully developed, some strategy is required to make things work in such a scenario.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Tokyo Babylon/X, with Seishirou/Subaru.

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

I can't point to a single favorite. I will say that I really like the mini series, most of which is unpublished (waiting editing), beginning with The Fear Returned. I think it has a lot of good physical and emotional description, character and relationship development, and allowed me to explore an aspect of my character that isn't possible in the game.

It seemed fitting for the grand finale of the series to be an umbrella pride dragon to represent the community as a whole.  If you identify as part of the LGBT+ community in any way at all, this one’s for you :)

The rest of the series can be seen here, or just click on one of the links below:

All these designs are also available on Teepublic and Redbubble!

Dragon Age fiction update

My new, complete Dorian/Kai Trevelyan fic is up on AO3!

With Corypheus defeated and the Inquisition between jobs, Dorian and Kai finally have time to take a holiday. Brandel’s Reach seems to be an ideal romantic escape, far from anything connected to the last few years. But the Reach has a past of its own, and not everything long buried is content to stay there. Something has been awakened, and it wants Dorian..

Part of the ongoing series The Contours of Shadows, but can be read as a standalone. Feedback is welcomed!

WIP Wednesday

Thanks to @johaeryslavellan for the tag!

FROM THE PAGES OF “MINRATHOUS AFTER MIDNIGHT” by THALIA TRYPHENA

…Speaking of Qarinus, a sleek yacht brought an intriguing trio from that shining city. First off was that stalwart firebrand of Tevinter politics, the always fabulous Magister Maevaris Tilani, looking vibrant after a summer on her Qarinus estate.

Following her, your Lady of Minrathous was right there to view the arrival of that powerful pair who have challenged the stuffy traditionalists of Tevinter society, Magister Dorian Pavus — looking positively delicious in a daring take on vintage Philandrus Verinus — and his riveting consort, Kai Trevelyan. Your Lady managed to buttonhole the dashing Magister for a few words, and it was hinted most intriguingly that a function may be in the works as House Pavus resumes its place in this City’s glittering social circuit.

from my WIP follow-up to Hidden, part of my Dorian/Kai Trevelyan series The Contours of Shadows  —————- Designed and rendered in DAZ Studio – wanted to see how they’d look with beards.

“Ventus” and the events of the latest DA comics do not exist in the series, so I suppose it’s AU now.

Tagging @dafan7711, @oftachancer, @myrddinderwydd, @rachelleofalltrades, @tessa1972, @fandomn00blr, @schoute and anyone who has something they’d like to share.

Reminder

Common, also known as the King’s Tongue or Trade tongue, canonically looks like this:

It was first created by the dwarves as a way to trade with surfacers.

The canon “swirly” text belongs to the Orlesians:

(Not a very good picture but the best I could find online).

So if you’re describing a character writing or reading, then remember that what they are reading is probably going to be blocky, rune-like characters and not swirly, flowing script!

Wait, hang on,

is the swirly text English? Because I’m pretty sure I can recognize some of those words (I can’t read a whole sentence but can at least see “Kirkwall” and a few other words”)

If it’s English that would be….interesting, since the Orlesians speak French.

I wonder if the above text is like when English speakers write Japanese words in roman letters? Where the Orlesians are writing down Common using Orlesian letters because it makes the words easier to pronounce/read for people who are just beginning to learn the language???

It is English. I can’t read a lot of it, although I’ll give it another go later. It is definitely about Kirkwall. Where is the image from and is it meant to be readable by us as the audience?

Yes, it is English. I transcribed it long ago (with some outside help) for a mod I was working on because I wanted to have Dorian reading something more scholarly. (Yes, I know he’s not beyond reading a schlocky novel and even he needs a mental break from more intense reading.) However, the first thing I did was to update the actual book.

It’s the diffuse image for the model of Hard in Hightown that is used in DAI. Because it’s meant to be used on a model in the game, the back cover and one of the pages is a mirror image. The cover has an author pic of Varric, with Hightown Romance, while the back is a mirror and says, “Kirkwall Publishing.”

In the ancient past, the city that is today Kirkwall sat on the very fringes of the Tevinter Imperium. It was the heart of the Empire’s slave trade, at one point housing almost a million slaves taken from elven lands as well as the more barbarous regions to the east and south. They were transported there by sea and fed into the unquenchable fires of the city’s industry, massive jet-stone quarries and a sea of foundries that produced the steel the rest of the Empire needed. The slavers of the ancient city grew wealthy beyond the dreams of avarice, but it was all built on the backs of the downtrodden. This was a place of darkness and dragons, a pit that few escaped, and when the tide finally turned against the Empire the slaves rose up here in an orgy of violence that has rarely been matched. The city that exists today is built upon the bones of that past, one that most citizens today would prefer to forget.
The two most prominent features in Hightown are the Keep, the home to the city’s ruling Viscount and his court, and the Chantry, home to the Grand Cleric and the center of religious worship in the city. These are both dwarven structures dating back to Imperial times, homes to the wealthiest magisters and nearly destroyed after the city’s fall long ago. They have since been rebuilt and converted, and the wealthy here cluster in the homes around the Keep and the Chantry as if their position in the city relied entirely upon their proximity to the center of power. Narrow, white-cobbled lanes wind from the stairs to the High Market, a rich merchant’s area bordered by the daunting stone edifice of the Dwarven Merchants’ Guild. In more prosperous areas, the growing power of Orlais shows itself in the elaborately ornamented manors where trees are trimmed into amusing geometrical shapes.

A better example of the “swirly text” would be a screenshot from the Varrac DA2 narration, or DAO’s opening lore monologue.

Here’s a shot with both!

Accepting @schattengerissen‘s general tag.

Alas, no bingo for me!

Some notes:

- I consider my fanfic life divided between old (early 2000s) and present day. I no longer write in the previous fandom and consider the pairing I used to obsess over to be toxic and unhealthy, rather than the true partnerships I prefer to read and write today. The older parts are marked in pink. None of my current fics have been posted without a beta.

- I was torn over the research one, but left it off because, while I have done research in the past, it’s usually not in advance. I don’t typically know that I’ll want or need to do any particular research until i get to a section that requires it.

- You can read my Dragon Age: Inquisition series, The Meaning of More, over on AO3.

Tagging anyone else who wants to play :). Blank template below.

Discord Color Palette

I’m a big fan of Discord’s dark theme. The graphite is a lovely color, especially on screens; there is just enough saturation to move it away from true gray while still allowing accent colors (coral or teal are quite nice); it’s readable, easy on the eyes, and has a decent amount of contrast. I like it so much that I’ve attempted to use it on various other things, such as a MusicBee skin.

The colors above are all in the primary UI. The dull and white text are both present as well; I added dark text (dull at 50%) for another variation.

Enjoy.
