Doing it!

@kadidoesthis / kadidoesthis.tumblr.com

Someone once told me to "just do it" and today I'm putting my money where my mouth is and I'm going to apply it to my health. That's it, I'm doing this. NOW!

“I’m different than other people. I’m never sad. I make my life happy through discipline. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, and I eat lots of fiber. Every day I take a walk in the park to think about my balance. I’ve been a chef, a fashion designer, a painter, and now I’m learning martial arts. I do Tai Chi in the park every morning. It helps give me energy for my painting. I have already learned forty-two moves. I’m ahead of everyone. I’m almost eighty years old, but all the women in my group think I’m in my fifties.”

Whether we make a profession out of it or not, we all need an activity that is beyond the mundane and that takes us out of our established limiting roles in society (mother, employee, neighbor, brother, boss, etc.). We all need something that helps us forget ourselves for a while- to momentarily forget our age, our gender, our socioeconomic background, our duties, our failures, and all that we have lost or screwed up. We need something that takes us so far out of ourselves that forget to eat, forget to pee, forget to mow our lawn, forget to resent our enemies, forget to brood over our insecurities.

So… there’s this ongoing thing in Quebec : knitting beanies for the refugees! Canada will welcome 25 000 refugees before the end of 2015, and there’s a lot of people who are scared and are saying really mean things about the Syrians. BUT, and that warms my heart, this is the answer of the people who want to let the refugees know that they are most welcome here.

(sorry for my English, but look at the Facebook page : 25 000 tuques*!)

*tuque is the word for beanies in Quebec

25 000 Tuques is about creating a tuque for distribution to the refugees with a small, personalized welcome message slipped inside by the « knitter ».

Yes, it’s pretty symbolic and It’s based on when we put a tuque on a new born baby but it’s also because we want a better fabric for our society, one that is tightly knitted together… No it does not exempt you from taking other actions. It’s our very own small way of welcoming them and make a direct and humane connection.

Knitting helps; it help us feel a bit less powerless and it helps keep someone warm. Our knitting, our time, our attention is a concrete gesture that trumps all petitions.

It’s humble but it gives us the time to talk, to think and to love a bit better.

It takes two hours to knit a simple tuques with average size knitting needles. Two hours spread appart between whenever you have the time; in the metro, in the house… At that rhythm we will not flood Quebec with tuques: It takes two hours to help welcome someone. The way I see it, and I don’t know what you think of it, it’s already so much better than doing nothing.

Ya know, I have absolutely no idea what most of you do for a living...

Without revealing any PI data or infringing on your company’s Social Media policies, (ie don’t remark where you work if it is against company policy), what do you all do???  I’ll go first!

I am in Information Security for a large firm; I’ve been in Information Security for 13ish years, and I have my CISSP.  Mainly, I take measures to keep the bad dudes from stealing your PI or doing other nefarious things with your personal data.

Now, you go…. what do you do?

I’m a financial fraud investigator.

Hotel manager. Anyone need a room?

Admin Assistant

I brew beer.  Well, that is my hobby and what I give a crap about.  I also work as an IT Business Analyst.

I am a qualified vocational trainer/assessor, have a diploma in Agriculture and Agronomy, a certificate in Remedial massage, make-up, photography and small business administration … Yet somehow I fell into IT and ended up becoming an Enterprise Architect, who now is masquerading as a senior manager of a regional team for a global tier one outsourcing consultancy.

Go figure.

I count photons and herd plankton. I had to Pile shit h.igher and Deeper to have this kind of exciting career. However my cubicle has a nice view when it’s not moving up and down too fast.

Telecommuting project manager for a software/tech company that facilitates electronic insurance procurement RFPs for large corporations.

I talk on the radio and fool people into liking me.

I manage our county’s longest-running (24 years) weekly producer’s-only farmers’ market, which is now only closed one week out of the year. I also do some prep-cooking for Taco Tonto’s, where you can get the only diversely ethnic foods in Kent, wrapped in a tortilla. And I am now also working with The Baker at his artisan bread and pastry bakery to create a micro breakfast and lunch cafe, which will be part mine.

I’m a QA Specialist/Sr. Test Analyst.

I’m also a musician who is proud to say that I have successfully sold albums in more than 2 dozen countries.

I’m the security infrastructure project manager for the midwest, west, and southwest for a large financial firm.

I am also a meat popsicle.

Optical Manager for the air force.

I teach high school Spanish.

I ruin your internet browsing experience through shitty ads.

Take care of dogs both my own and until recently other ppl’s and take photos buuuuuuuut I am not employed. Never done nothing good for nobody!

I am a freelance essayist, admin assistant for an adult education program (which includes ESL and GED support), clerk for a gifted and talented program, creative writing teacher, and a grad assistant for my MFA program. And yet I still complain about being tired and anxious all the time…
