At the Democratic National Convention last week, President Obama gave Hillary Clinton props for being a super tough rival during the 2008 Democratic primary. “She was doing everything I was doing,” he said, “but just like Ginger Rogers, it was backwards in heels.”

Now, it’s always great to hear the leader of the free world acknowledge the unlevel playing field … but I have one quibble: I think it’s time we stopped talking about women doing things “backwards and in high heels.” (And not just because it’s no fun to wear heels on a playing field, and an unlevel one, at that.)

So if not “backwards and in heels,” then what? Perhaps we just need to adapt the phrase for 21st century concerns. How about:

“She did everything he did, but she did it …

… concurrently, and with inadequate parental leave”

… competently, but still making $0.79 cents to the dollar"

… apologetically, lest she otherwise be labeled a ‘bitch’ “

… nervously, while trolled on social media”

If you can’t find a place on your blog for Patrick Stewart in a bathtub dressed like a lobster, then your blog probably doesn’t deserve such majesty anyway.

It has returned to my dash and I cannot fight the compulsion to reblog…

the patrick lobster appears only once in a thousand years, reblog for good luck

To us, this study suggests that if women are to succeed in a biased world, encouraging them to be more confident is not enough. To get credit for having confidence and competence, and to have the influence in their organizations that they would like to have, women must go out of their way to be seen as warm. We wish this were not the case. We wish women and men could be evaluated according to the same meritocratic standards. But as our research shows, we seem to be a long way off from those days.

Are you thinking of me when you’re putting on your makeup, darling, and dyeing your hair like you do?
Well you’re wasting your time if you’re trying to impress me,
I waste all my time just thinking of you

So stressed out

And I didn't realize it until today. The first full day back from vacation (maybe that's why?). Andy starts a new job soon. As a bartender. Where he won't be getting home til after midnight some/most nights in the beginning. We're getting married this fall. We still have a bunch to do leading up to the wedding (clothes, rings, flowers - I'm doing felt though, license). His sister is having a baby. His parents are building a new house and everyone is moving. My parents are coming to visit at some point. I don't have any friends up here yet and I feel like I'm a burden to long distance friends (all in my head, no one is making me feel this way). And I don't know what to do with myself on my own. Phew ok. At least it's out now.
