Le Grand Benare The view from Grand Benare is one of the best I have seen so far. The mountain that pops up from the clouds in the distance is the volcano, Piton De La Furnace. And just in front is the Cirque de Cilaos, (valley of Cilaos). We reached the viewpoint by driving up and park the car at Maïdo, and do the walk from there, about 4 hours. The night in Grand Benare was a cold one. Bring plenty of warm clothes!
La plage! / The beach! One thing that cannot be forgotten when living on an island. On Reunion Island there are great swimming beaches on the west coast where the safe lagoons have formed naturally. It is only allowed to swim inside the lagoons due to the risk of sharks in the open sea. Along the beach you will find countless outdoor bars and restaurants. During the day people swim with masks and tuba to see the corals and many, many beautiful fish and underwater creatures (like sea turtles!). In the evening, many people come to the beach to make a camp fire and enjoy a few (or many) beers with friends and family. Unfortunately, the animal and plant life in the lagoons have changed a lot during the last five years due to the large amount of people visiting and living on the island. Therefore, its always good to remember and respect simple rules like dont step on corals and dont put sunscreen before swimming.
Sleeping in Trois Roche
Trois Roche is in the valley of Mafate, Reunion Island. The river takes a gigantic fall making into what seems like a sudden hole in the ground. Dont fall!
The great valley of Mafate. Mafate is another location where no cars have acces. Supplies to the small villages, in french called îlet, arrive by helicopters.
Rhum Arrange! The truth is, that the rum on this island is not the best rum. So, therefore its a big culture to make “rhum arrange”. Take whatever fruit you prefer, put it in rum and add a bit of sugar. Leave it for as long as you prefer. The longer the better. So, of course we had to try for ourselves. Banana, pineapple, ginger, vanilla and grapefruit.
Two nights in Grand Bassin. Réunion Island. I love to walk into the valleys of this island. Especially the ones like Grand Bassin with no roads. Not a single car. The quietness is healing.
On volcanic lands The path to reach the crater of the volcano on Reunion Island. The area has a great atmosphere, especially on this day with the clouds hovering around.
REUNION ISLAND A little piece of France in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and close neighbor to the Island Mauritius. The island has a rich variety of beautiful landscapes, mountains, volcanic land, beaches, tropical valleys, waterfalls and rivers. I am currently living here, so, more pictures will come.
