real freedom includes the right to be a fucked-up dysfunctional weirdo. when you lack this right, your inability or refusal to comply with social norms will be used as a pretext to take away your other freedoms. all of us are fucked-up weirdos on the inside, so with sufficiently hostile and intrusive surveillance anyone can be unpersoned.

Fucked-up dysfunctional weirdo with full rights to and supports available to ensure whatever needs can be functionally met and are desired by said weirdo are filled.

If you don't support the rights of kooks, weirdos, freaks, oddballs, and funky fellows then get out.

The pathologization and criminalization of pecularity doesn't only affect the neurodivergent and the mentally ill, it can and will be used by the state against "normal" people the moment they step out of line.

Not only is it good to support the rights of freaks and weirdos on the grounds of protecting the rights of the neurodivergent and mentally ill, it's also good on the grounds of cutting off a vector of state repression against the general public.

As soon as you start deeming it acceptable to take away the basic rights of "freaks", you open the door to being deemed a "freak" yourself as soon as those in power decide you're inconvenient.

Throwing "weirder" people under the bus will never guarantee you safety. You gotta park the bus so it stops running people over in general.

Thinking of starting a new food trend but pro-grains and carbs and such. Start worshipping bread again. Make some shrines to rice and pasta. Yell “blasphemy!” real loud when someone starts saying “grains contain anti-nutrients,” whatever that means. Begin some street sermons like, “what blessed our ancestors to get-eth through the long winter, turn our settlements to towns, and inspire the people to revolution. Who provides when all other foods go out. Who smells delicious as the yeast fuck-eth.”

Thinking of calling it the Free Bagel movement.

On a side note, modern sensibility often feels like it’s trending toward the depressingly sterile. No decadence of bread, no sex or attraction in our movies, no death mentioned in our video feeds, no aesthetic in our counterculture, no moral complications in our characters or flaws in our heroes.

It’s like the constant watchful eye of the Modern has given way to a Grass Lawn Culture:

Lawns are nature purged of sex and death.

I hate true crime I hate it. not true crime in the sense of just like. knowing abt crimes or whatever but this whole True Crime industry where you get these instagram influencer types dressing up in their cute little outfits and doing up their mascara and winged eyeliner for the thumbnail of their youtube video where they talk abt the violent death of a child makes me want to commit a True Crime myself

So while this whole “who is worst Chris? Chris Pratt” stuff is going on. I think it’s also important to talk about Best Chris. And it’s Chris Eccleston.

Some Stuff (Almost???? i dont know abt every single one) Every Culture Has

- a habit of having a plastic bag of plastic bags

- some variation of Pancake

- stabby weapons

- matriarch has a danish butter cookies tin filled with buttons

universal human traits across every culture throughout history:

  • fried dough of some sort
  • alcohol; doesn’t matter what they got they’re gonna ferment it
  • mostly use spears in a fight but go to great lengths to make swords ‘cause they’re cooler
  • play games about throwing things
  • pack-bond with random predators
  • put a bunch of bags in another bag so you can have more bags per bag

fancy hats, finding repeated syllables in names cute, and narrative dance

Please don’t leave this in the tags @paper-storm

this doesn’t have the bags but i love a chance to bring this out again, enjoy

  • Making cool textiles
  • Telling stories about the stars
  • Baskets
  • Making little dudes outta clay
  • Carving rocks into cooler rocks
  • Breakfast

Good morning to everyone who is going to troll an oil company today 😇

The goal of bullying Big Oil companies over their climate tweets isn’t just to educate people about corporate hypocrisy. It’s to unite activists around the goal of taking away their social license to operate.
Oil majors have admitted to investors that their business would be in deep trouble without broad public support. They’ve also admitted the biggest threat to maintaining social license is public anger over climate change.
Oil companies could remedy this threat by winding down their fossil fuel operations, and investing heavily in renewable energy. But for the most part, they’ve chosen to combat public anger over climate change by investing in strategic communication. This consistent choice of empty climate words over meaningful climate action is why several Shell executives quit the company this week—and it’s why Heglar says social media call-outs are increasingly powerful.

Weird peeve time. Calling lab grown gemstones “fake” is stupid because it’s the same shit just not formed naturally. An artificially grown diamond is the same shit as a natural diamond it is the exact same material bro it’s all fuckign carbon

It’s carbon it’s pretty and it didn’t involve slave labor what’s not to love??? Hi I’m having geology opinions tonight apparently. And I’m right

There is so much bullshit in the diamonds industry to be mad about tbh. It also ties into the bullshit of the wedding industry as a whole but we don’t have the time to unpack all that

not even going to lie, the day i learned i could get like 15 lab grown rubies the size of dimes for $20 is the day i spent $20 on rubies, and i have never once said to myself “man, i wish this cost $1,600 and the lives of eight children to produce”

We are a pro-lab-grown mineral blog here, not only is it massively cheaper but massively more ethical as well in many cases.

another very cool lab grown gem is Moissanite. It has a 9.25 on the mohs hardness scale where diamond is a 10. Moissanote also has a 2.69 refractive index in comparison to diamond’s 2.419 and here is the difference

and the best thing about moissanite? It is all lab grown and it costs only a fraction of what diamond costs. So fuck the diamond indsutry and buy lab grown gems which cost significantly less

for years people wanted alchemy, well now we have alchemy and we’re making gemstones out of it and suddenly “it doesn’t count” anymore

@gendernewtral holy shit what??

an update to my insulin pump (a model which is highly recommended by doctors because it has software you can update, unlike other models) would allow my doctor to see more of my medical data because of the way my pump would now function.

i technically had the choice not to update it, but if i didn’t, my insurance company would not cover the cost of fixing or replacing it if something happened to it. they could say that the damage came from not updating the system, even if the damage was completely external.

some of the software updates have been beneficial, and have made my life easier. however, the choice to use these new system has always been made for me. i can’t afford to replace this $3000 device that allows me to live without injecting insulin upwards of five times a day.

disabled people already live in a world that is hypermanaged by people who have absolute control over our health and safety. anyone with a prosthetic, hearing aid, or pacemaker can face the same problem i did if the manufacturer decides they need to exert their presence in our lives more than they already do. the “cyberpunk dystopia” is already here, and if you want to change the ever-growing vice grip of “smart technology,” help disabled activists. we’ve been here all along.

(if you want a short primer on what it’s like to be disabled and rely on technology, read Jillian Weise’s personal essay in Alice Wong’s Disability Visibility).

More inadvisable Dungeons & Dragons character backgrounds:

  • A legendary warrior-king with an equally legendary enchanted blade, risen from deathless sleep after unnumbered centuries to answer their people’s hour of need, only to discover that the martial sciences have advanced somewhat while they’ve been napping, and by modern standards, “legendary warrior-king with an equally legendary enchanted blade” works out to “3rd level fighter with a +1 sword”
  • A rogue wanted for multiple counts of regicide who claims it’s totally not their fault – they were just trying to run a petty grift, and one thing led to another, and suddenly there’s a dead king on their hands; though it’s apparently happened multiple times, all available evidence points to them telling the truth
  • A sorcerer who’s the source of their own magical bloodline, owing to a spot of ill-considered time travel and a resulting “I’m my own grandpa” style predestination paradox (well, more like great great grandpa, which they contend makes it excusable – how many people can honestly say they’d recognise their own four-times-removed ancestor on sight?)
  • A warlock whose pact was made quite unexpectedly when they and a bunch of their drunking buddies attempted to conjure a fictitious elder god they’d made up while absolutely hammered, and the god in question actually responded; it’s genuinely unclear whether some other entity is impersonating their fabricated patron, or whether they legitimately invented a Great Old One
  • A wizard who has no formal training whatsoever, having worked out the secrets of wizardry from first principles by sheer accident while attempting to devise a better method of preserving canned peaches; in spite of their prodigious talent at spellcasting, they insist that it’s just something they do to pay the bills while continuing their quest for the perfect preserves

That first one is legitimately great in an Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer kind of way.

If I were playing them, I’d run them as a straight inversion of the everything-was-bigger-and-better-in-the-past trope that a lot of fantasy media is stuck on. Like: “Well, yes, in my day I was a legendary dragon-slayer, but in my day your average dragon was about the size of a cow. When did dragons get so big? How did dragons get so big?” Every word out of their mouth just raising further questions.
