Does everyone make it out of this season alive?
What’s hard for Michaela is that she has to play a double agent and keep up the story with Caleb. She’s kind of his person. He’s trusted her more than Annalise and more than the rest of them, so she’s really put in this very tough position where she has to step up and sort of act like Annalise. She’s really good at that, but we’ll see that it also weighs on her very heavily. I don’t know if she likes the person she’s becoming.
It is very complicated because Bonnie and Annalise have been through things that are huge, bond them for life and allow them to have these fights where they say, “I hope you die.” It’s whether the newness of the Laurel relationship can ever really transcend what Bonnie and Annalise have together. We’ve only started to understand how they are bonded. In the first episode back, we’re going to see a lot between Bonnie and Annalise and also understand that Bonnie gets Annalise in a way nobody else does.
If Laurel is becoming the new Bonnie, what does that mean for Bonnie and Annalise’s relationship?
Connor is obviously still with Oliver (Conrad Ricamora), and he is in every episode. They have a lot to deal with because Connor has a lot of secrets to keep from Oliver at the same time that he wants to get closer with him. We’re going to see a softer side of Connor, someone who is still so angry that he’s been put in this position, but knowing there’s not really an escape for him. He copes in a way that’s opposite of how he would before. He’s a cut-and-run type of person. Now he’s more trying to look out for the group; trying to kind of be a leader.
I'm really excited for the new relationships to develop between the students, like who takes care of who, how people are helping each other get through this -- versus the last time, where I feel like they all kind of tried to deal with it alone. They're leaning on each other more in a way I find really appealing. Asher is the newbie of the group and they all want to help him in terms of helping him keep the secret."
But is the rest of the Keating 5 helping Asher out of genuine concern or just to cover their own butts? "That's the question I want you guys to be asking as you're watching it and that's what Asher will be asking too," Nowalk says.

Viola Davis wins the SAG Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series
We left her [Annalise] bleeding out on the floor — and when we come back, she’s really broken. It was really important to Viola and to me to play the reality of that — of a person who’s gone through a major life trauma. We’re going to see a whole different side of her. Annalise has been through surgery, and what I love about Viola is she encourages me to stick to the real physical harm of that. And honestly, even though she is in bed and in pain for a little bit, she’s fascinating to watch — no matter what shape she’s in. She’s one actor I could watch laying in bed for six episodes. The first episode back, I find her performance extremely compelling and different. It can’t be the same thing every time. It can’t just always be 42 minutes of Annalise kicking ass and saying one-liners. And there are different ways we explore her bad-assness — even when she’s sick.
