I study film because of Sherlock
A friend recommended Sherlock to me in 2012. I watched all of it in German (my first language), then all of it in English. It immediately became my favourite show. Someone introduced me to tumblr in 2014 and over the next months I was swallowed by amazing and dedicated in-depth analyses of the show. I discovered art, fiction and poetry all dedicated to it. I even made some myself.
In 2014 I had my final exams and hit a dead end. I did not know what to do with myself. Now, the fandom did not save me. That’s not where this is going. But it helped me save myself. Someone whose blog I was following wrote something about their course at university, a course called “film science”. I was immediately intrigued, looked it up, applied, got in, and I am now studying it in the third semester. I’m happier at uni than I ever was at school, which basically makes me the happiest I’ve ever been. I have a perspective for the future, hilarious friends and something to do, mentally. Without Sherlock and the fandom, I would not be where I am now. The door that has led me to so much more knowledge and appreciation for the art of film would not have opened. Yes, Sherlock is itself already a great show, but for me it has, through the fandom, led to a significant life decision.
Even though this might seem like a chain of coincidences, I am certain, that if the show had not been as detailed, intricate and ingenious as it is, there would not have been entire blogs dedicated to decoding it. Without those blogs I would not have found that one university course that finally made me get off my ass. So in the end, I have to thank the creators of Sherlock themselves for the best decision of my life.
