my favorite bit in harry potter is when a gangly freckled ginger child with an old pet rat and patched jeans and dirt on his nose awkwardly sits down across from a scrawny underfed lil kid with baggy clothes and broken glasses and lightning carved onto his face and they both think ‘i must protect this boy’

Support public libraries!!

I am heartsick from seeing so many thousands of books being thrown in the trash, week after week after week with no end in sight.

Please support your public library!

It is super-easy: all you have to do is use the library. The following is a list of things you can do at the library, and all of it helps both you and the library, so win-win!

Not all libraries offer all of these services, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask a librarian or to check the library’s Web site!

*Walk through the front door. (Seriously - every person who enters the building adds to a statistic that tells the people in charge that the library is being utilized and should be given resources accordingly.)

*Use their free Wi-Fi or sign up to use a public computer.

*Check out movies, TV shows, and documentaries (and anime!). (The library has a lot more than just books! You can check out all sorts of things.)

-You can order items from other branches if the branch you visit doesn’t have what you’re looking for. The items will be sent to whichever branch you specify and reserved for a little while under your name so that you can pick them up and check them out at your convenience.

-There’s also a service that does the same thing, except you can order items from other cities if your local library doesn’t have what you’re looking for.

*Check out music CDs - rock, country, R&B, classical, movie soundtracks, folk, you name it!

*Check out laptops or tablets.

*Use their job center, which can offer free help with résumés and such.

*Attend free classes at their adult education center.

*Use their copier, scanner, or fax machine (there’s usually a charge for this, but most of the other library services are free).

*Check out e-books or vinyl LPs.

*Check out audiobooks. These are great for people who don’t have time to sit down and read a book. You can listen to audiobooks while driving, exercising, or doing housework.

*Check out books, DVDs, and music in other languages, such as Spanish.

*Read the newspapers and magazines. (You can check out older magazines just like you would books.)

*Attend library-sponsored or -hosted programs and events, such as story time for children, activities for teens, art shows and concerts, book clubs, etc.

*Rent the event room for your own events, meetings, etc.

*Buy used books, movies, etc. for super-cheap prices at the library’s book sales. (Some of these items were donated for this purpose. Other items were withdrawn from the library’s collection because they weren’t getting checked out, and this is their last chance to be useful to someone - if they don’t sell, they eventually get thrown away.)

*Donate books, movies, etc. to be sold in library book sales.

*And, of course, check out books. Books get withdrawn when they haven’t been checked out in a while. Some of these books go to the book sales, but others…sometimes a lot of others…go straight into the garbage.

Check out books that you have any interest in whatsoever, even if you don’t get a chance to finish reading them.

Check out books you love that you want to remain on the shelves for new readers to find.

In addition to fiction (including comic books and manga!), there is fantastic non-fiction on subjects such as:

-Cookbooks -Car repair manuals -Pregnancy and child-rearing -Movies (as in, books about movies or TV shows) -Job hunting or career-improving -Crafts (including crochet, knitting, etc.) -Political and economic commentary -Memoirs (in addition to biographies of famous historical figures, there are many fascinating books written by contemporary people with vastly different life experiences) -Fashion, makeup, hairstyling, etc. -Academic subjects like math and foreign languages -Physical and mental illnesses -Dating and marriage -Allllllll sorts of books about animals -Religious studies -Gender issues -Race issues -Home decor -Various science topics like astronomy, geology, etc. -Architecture -All kinds of art -Poetry

*And more! Check your library’s Web site or ask a librarian about any other services and programs they might offer, such as free help preparing tax returns or free meals for children during summer vacation.

Additional ways you can support the library:

*Volunteer. (It’ll look good on your résumé or college application, too.)

*Donate money. (Make sure it goes straight to the library rather than just the city in general.)

Public libraries are super-important and super-helpful community resources! There is so much cool stuff to do there, everything from entertainment to self-education to enrichment.

The public library is here for you, so make use of it! Prove to the people in charge that the library is valued and deserves more resources to provide even more cool stuff to patrons.

10 Reasons Why Leonardo DiCaprio And Kate Winslet Are Genuinely Best Friends

They’ve been pals for years When the duo were at the Golden Globes for ‘Titanic’ in 1998 they were asked if they came as a couple. “Yeah we came together”, said Leo. “We’re good buddies!”

They hang out in private It’s not just a showbiz relationship. Leo knows Kate so well her kids apparently call him “Uncle Leo”.

They’ve supported each other’s careers Leo told Oprah: “In a lot of ways, Kate and I have really grown up in this industry together; we’ve been a support mechanism for each other for such a long period of time. We’ve been there for each other and helped guide each other.”

They once filmed a sex scene in front of her husband and it wasn’t weird The scene was for ‘Revolutionary Road’, when Winslet was married to director Sam Mendes. Leo said: “Kate Winslet is one of my dearest friends. We have the ultimate trust in each other and the best of intentions for what we want to do. I knew Kate before Sam Mendes [her husband] even met her. So on the outside, it may seem strange to do a sex scene with a woman while her husband is directing. But it didn’t feel that way to me.”

They’re not shy about being mates

At the The SAGs in 2005, Winslet crashed Leo’s red carpet interview to say: “I just feel so proud that you’ve turned into this really special person.” Leo responded: “I love you, sweetheart.”

Leo gives Kate really personal gifts At the The Oscars in 2009, Kate was once again nominated for ‘The Reader’ and on the red carpet showed off a necklace Leo had given her. Leo also bought Kate an inscribed gold ring, after they filmed Revolutionary Road but she keeps the inscription a secret.

Leo gave Kate away at her wedding When Winslet was married to Ned Rocknroll in 2012 in a secret ceremony, Dicaprio gave her away.

They respect each others work On the Golden Globes red carpet, Leo said Kate Winslet was his “favourite actor in the industry”. Meanwhile back in 2009 Kate said: “Leo is amazing. I genuinely think he’s the best actor of his generation.”

Leo is really REALLY happy for Kate when she wins an award Like at the Golden Globes in 2009, firstly when Kate won for ‘The Reader’…

…then during her speech her speech for ‘Revolutionary Road’, saying: “Leo, I’m so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you and how much I’ve loved you for 13 years… . I love you with all my heart, I really do.”

Leo responded by blowing her a kiss.

He also gave her hand a friendly squeeze when she rushed to pick up her BAFTA in 2016.

And the feeling is mutual Kate gave Leo a big hug when he won for ‘The Revenant’ at the 2016 SAGs.

And the duo hung out during the Golden Globes, when they BOTH won.

And finally, Kate’s teary-eyed look during Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech, after he finally won his Oscar, was perhaps the most heart-warming moment of the whole ceremony.

We’ve got to go, there’s something in our eye….

what she says: I'm fine.
what she means: Astoria Malfoy made up a song about how candy helps you make friends and then loaded her son with sweets before she put him on the train because she knew he was shy and awkward and there were so many rumors. She must have been so worried that the other kids were going to be so mean to him, and oh god, do you think she cried when she found out about Albus, do you think she was so relieved that someone else could finally see that her little boy was kind and sweet and funny, and oh my god I'm not crying, YOU'RE CRYING!!!

everybody talks abt how the rest of the marauders were dramatic af but we never mention how peter’s coping mechanism for being scared was secretly spying on an underground rebel organization and feeding information to an evil overlord for months, selling out two of his best mates to be murdered, framing it on another one of his best mates by staging a screaming match in the middle of the street, then faking his own death by causing an explosion that killed twelve people. thats some high calibre drama

#latinolitchallenge 2016 Wrap-up

For Hispanic Heritage Month I like to challenge myself to reading books by Latino authors as a way to combat the lack of diversity in books. Thus, #latinolitchallenge was born. This year I read 2 books by Margarita Engle, a Cuban-American author. I was very excited to read her books because I am Cuban-American myself and because she writes about pre-revolutionary Cuban history, a subject completely foreign to me. The Lightning Dreamer deals with a girl named Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, who came to be known as one of Latin America's first feminist and abolitionist writers. I gave this book a 4/5 stars. Lion Island is about Antonio Chuffat, a boy with Chinese, African, and Cuban descent who became an advocate for civil rights. Chinese history is a part of Cuba and is often overlooked so I was very appreciative of this book's existence. I gave this book a 4.5/5 Of the two, I enjoyed Lion Island best but I reccommend both to any. They are written in verse so they are quick reads. Happy Reading!
