Nothing will ruin your 20’s more than thinking you should have your life together already.
The Do’s and Don’ts and Volunteering/Shadowing at a Veterinary Clinic
It’s summer time! Which means it’s also prime time to get veterinary experience! Here is just a few do’s and don’ts that one might consider when they are following a vet this year!
- DO ask what the dress code will be, and follow it! Dress is such a variable thing (maybe scrubs, maybe street clothes, maybe coveralls and boots, maybe professional wear), so make sure to ask your vet before you shadow what you should be wearing!
-DO keep a notebook or document of your volunteering hours.
- DO NOT assume that what you were able to do with your last clinic you can do that here! Some clinics are comfortable with you restraining or helping with treatments, but some would rather you have an “hands-off” approach. You should always ask!
- DO NOT interrupt the vet in a room with a client! Or excessively ramble! Unless you are invited into the conversation, I would personally be very careful about butting into the vet speaking to an owner, especially if it is a sensitive topic. I personally, as a shadow, took the “do not speak unless spoken to” while in rooms, and I would then mentally mark any questions I had and ask them after the fact.
- DO ask questions, but DO be mindful. Lots of vets love to teach, and they love you to learn, but sometimes they aren’t able to answer if it is 1) during a life or death situation or 2) extremely inappropriate or in front of a client.
- DO NOT be mean to the other staff!
- DO have a good attitude! Smiling and enthusiasm can go a long way! :)
- DO bring snacks so you will NOT fall over in surgery! There is absolutely NO shame in getting lightheaded in surgery, especially if this is your first one you are watching. Some tips to help can be as simple as EATING! If you are going into the surgery suite, take a moment to eat a banana or other snacks. Drink some water, too. Don’t lock your knees, and for me, when I start getting faint, light swaying or moving my feet helps! And if you are feeling woozy, SIT DOWN! The vet won’t be mad, though they would be concerned if you hurt yourself or fall into their sterile field…
Happy shadowing this year my lovely pre-vetties!
Also help them clean! It gets busy and they will thank you!
So this is what I’ve been doing my entire life
