Sound Check : Mercies - 'Clouds'

"HelloGiggles is very excited to bring you an exclusive premiere of the indie trio, Mercies’, track ‘Clouds’! Compared to the likes of Beirut and Fleet Foxes, these folkies continue to deliver!

Mercies will be releasing their new EP, The Ballet, on March 27th. After the success of their debut album, Three Thousand Days, it’s without a doubt this will be a highly anticipated release. Consisting of some new material, some reworked material, and the score for a ballet commissioned by The Charlottesville Ballet, this release will serve just as unique as the band itself.

Tucked in the woods of northern Connecticut is the barn/recording studio/rehearsal space that Mercies calls home. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Josh Rheault, with the help of his family and friends, restored the barn in the Fall and Winter of 2010/2011. Not only were 2×4’s cut, concrete poured, and electricity run, but Mercies found it’s humble beginnings through this restoration process.

Mercies began in the winter of 2009 when friend, collaborator and drummer Sammy Dent joined Rheault. The duo spent the Fall and Winter of 2010/2011 recording their debut album Three Thousand Days in the space now simply and affectionately referred to as “The Barn”.

Now joined by bassist Jordan Flower, Mercies have produced yet another masterpiece. Chronicled on The Ballet you will find a little bit of new, old, and just as the titled states, music for a ballet. The EP features ‘Music for a Ballet: Light’ and ‘Music for a Ballet: Dark’. Both pieces make up the composition for The Charlottesville Ballet choreographed by Audrey Fenske.

Substream Music Press:

"The name Renee Yohe may be familiar to you from all the support work the non-profit organization, To Write Love on Her Arms has done in her honor. Following the success of her acclaimed book, “A Purpose For The Pain,” which documents her journey from self-destruction to her new outlook on life through a series of heartbreaking and inspiring journal entries, Renee is now channeling all of her creative energy into her music career with her new band, BEARCAT. Her hauntingly beautiful voice, which has been compared to the likes of Fiona Apple, Zooey Deschanel and Kate Nash, has landed BEARCAT a highly coveted spot on tour with Never Shout Never this spring. The band has just started a kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/AErDWH) to help fund their upcoming album, and have raised over $1k in the first week!

Purchase “Crazy Fishes” on iTunes today here: http://bit.ly/ytKGZD

Throughout her life, Renee Yohe has always believed in the value of telling her story. The platforms have changed from social media, to books, to public speaking engagements, and most recently, a film based on her life starring Kat Dennings and Chad Michael Murray (due in 2012).  Renee first entered the public spotlight with To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit organization that aims to present hope for people struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury and thoughts of suicide. In December 2011, TWLOHA was awarded a $1million grant from Chase at the first-ever American Giving Awards on NBC. By sharing her own personal struggles, Renee and the organization have helped millions.

Through everything, music has always played a crucial and stabilizing role in Renee’s life. Her favorite bands helped her through some of her darkest times. Later on, TWLOHA would find it’s biggest initial support and exposure from bands that would wear the organization’s t-shirts. When the opportunity came to form her own band, the transition just felt natural.

Renee’s eclectic talents and triumphant experiences create a compellingly notable project with BEARCAT. With a new album, a spring tour and a film due out in 2012, this is set to be their year.

Please help BEARCAT fund their upcoming albu by checking out their kickstarter campaign and spreading the word! Check out the campaign here: http://kck.st/AErDWH"

MEET EMII AND HER 'STILETTOS'

Check out Emii's Video Interview with The Insider here:

"Sometimes I just want to listen to a really good pop song.  It's hard to describe Emii, who showed up to hang out with me wearing boots inspired by Boba Fett from Star Wars, and a bra made out of glass. She's part Lady Gaga, part Amy Lee from Evanescence and half-way through out interview she busted out in song and proved to me that she was all voice.

Having already score a hit when she released Mr.Romeo with Snoop Dogg, she is back with a new girl anthem Stilettos. It's a love story about a girl, a boy, and her shoes. What more could you want?"  - Keltie Colleen, The Insider

Hey TWIST Readers!

We just caught up with Before You Exit at their concert in New Jersey! This band from Orlando, FL just released a new single, "End of the World," and has been touring with Allstar Weekend! The members of the band Braiden Wood, Riley McDonough, Connor McDonough, and Thomas Silvers spilled to TWIST exclusively about how they got started in music, their dream collaboration and how they came up with their name!

XOXO, TWIST

TWIST: So how did you guys become interested in music? Connor: I started when I was about 5. This sounds stupid but my parents got me a keyboard. I would just pick out songs on it and play them by ear for a long time. I just kind of taught myself how to play. I had some friends that played guitar that got me interested in that but same thing, I learned by ear. Picking things out and learning from other people--that kind of stuff. Riley: Connor taught me. We just kinda screwed up learning music together until we met these two guys -- Braiden and Thomas. Thomas: I don't know, I kind of just picked up drums when I was like 10, maybe 11. I don't know, it just kind of escalated from there. I really liked it, started playing with it. Got my first snare drum actually from my neighbor across the street. He thought I had a talent so he gave me my first drum and I started playing. Braiden: I started playing piano in fourth grade. I had music class in school so I kind of grew up playing with different instruments and tinkering around. I didn't start actual lessons till about fourth grade so I've kept learning different instruments since then.

TWIST: Where does the name 'Before You Exit' come from? Connor: We all came up with the idea. We were all sitting around. At the time it was just Braiden, Thomas and I. It came up with like wanting to make a difference in the world before you die -- before you exit. It's just kind of a cool name. We came up with the name and for about a year we didn't realize that our initials spell B.Y.E. So that was weird and we discovered that. We've just been going ever sense.

TWIST: Can you tell us about your new single "End of the World?" Riley: Our new single came out in 2012 for the "End of the World." Connor: When we wrote that song we freaked out and was like 'whoa, this is cool.' We liked it the day of and the next day knew it was dangerous. We woke up and couldn't stop singing it for the next four days! Riley: We had this voice memo and just kept replaying it to hear the song because we didn't have the version back yet. We just kept playing it back because we kept wanting to hear it. It was like this really raw idea but we really liked it. TWIST: If you could collaborate with one artist who would it be and why? Connor: Well, right now we're really into harmony. Like we've been trying to get our band into everyone singing and doing different parts. We just did a video [cover] of the band One Direction so I'd probably say them. They're like a boy band. We're like a boy band with guitars. It'd still be really cool to collaborate with them. Braiden, Riley and Thomas: Agreed! TWIST: What is it like touring with Allstar Weekend? Connor: I love it! I think it's been an awesome tour. We're on like show 30 now. It's been great, a lot of fun, and a lot of kids showing up. Just some really energetic shows. Like everyone has been great. It's been a blast.

TWIST: Thanks for talking to us! Before You Exit: Thanks TWIST!

Gearing up for the release of their sophomore EP, emo-pop foursome Before You Exit is treating us to a short, sweet and stripped-down sample of their new single "End Of The World." Though the performance lasts just 2 minutes, the band still manages to bring on complete cute overload (thanks in large part to their mile-wide smiles and general Muppety charm).

Shedding the slick and shiny sound of the song's original version, Before You Exit's acoustic rendition of "End Of The World" has guitarists Connor McDonough and Braiden Wood switching to acoustic axes while drummer Thomas Silvers brings the beat with one of those adorable egg-shaped shakers. As singer Riley McDonough belts his heart out, the rest of the boys join him for some high-as-the-sky harmonies at the song's sweetie-pie chorus (sample line: "Love me like it's the end of the world") and that super-catchy "na na na" refrain.

Hailing from Orlando -- hence their Disney World-referencing moniker -- Before You Exit dropped their debut EP Letting Go last spring. After touring in support of All Time Low and Rocket To The Moon, the band took the helm as headliners of the Next Big Thing Tour. Their as-yet-untitled follow-up to Letting Go is due out this March.

You might recognize Eric Nicolau from Allstar Weekend or Glee, but his new album "Won't You Stay" is creating a buzz that's all his own. Seventeen hung out with Eric in LA and we are letting you inside our juicy convo. Read it here!

Seventeen: You moved to LA when you were 21. Did you know anyone when you moved out here?

Eric Nicolau: I went by myself. I literally borrowed my mom’s station wagon, packed up, and I drove myself out.

17: What do you think that taught you?

EN: It was a huge risk, and it was a huge leap of faith. It was a decision where you jump in or you don’t.

17: You recently got back from touring with Selena Gomez. How was that? Any fun stories?

EN: She’s really down to earth. One time, I was throwing the Frisbee with one of the other guys in Allstar Weekend and I accidentally hit Selena! That was my first interaction with her and I was so scared she was going to come over and yell at me. But she was so nice about it! She just laughed it off.

17: Will you be touring again this summer?

EN: We could be! I’m excited about what’s going to happen this year. Right now I’m doing Glee and The Glee Project, which will air sometime in May. But, I’m really excited about what’s to come.

17: What song are you most excited for fans to hear?

EN: “How We Grow Old” is a really relatable song, so I think people will love that song. I’m also really excited about “Get Down”. it’s a sweet R&B song.

17: What do you want people to learn from you and this album?

EN: The message is about being who you are and not second guessing yourself. I used to think so much about what I was doing, what I was going to wear, what kind of song I was going to write, what kind of song I was going to put out. Then I just got to this point where I was like, you know what? Like, Selena Gomez’s song, “I wouldn’t want to be anybody else,” I guess it just rubbed off on me. I don’t. I’m just going to do what I like, and it’s a little unorthodox because people want you to stick to one type of music, but I just did it. That’s why I wrote all those songs.
