Plaid to the bone

Hi, I'm Alex. I review comics, listen to vinyl, and write a weekly comic strip called Teacher! You can find me on Twitter @AChaunyan!

This one goes way back. A friend form grad school let me use their likeness so I tried my hand at a few half-sleeve tattoos. Is any school subject not free from this critique?

I once asked a middle school student I met if he liked school. He said yes, but when I asked him his favorite subject, all he said was “gym.” I responded, “what about science or history?” “To which he said, no I hate those, I like gym.”

Maybe next week.

It’s been a snowy few days here in New England, and while I’m sure the students were waiting for this with anticipation, I was trying not to [snow] bank on it. But, the call came in before 6 so I guess everyone gets a break in what was already a 4 day week.

I made this strip a while back, and even though I posted a strip for the week already, I thought I should put it up on this-the holiest of school days. A true blue snow day. Enjoy.

This week, we have a story from a friend in the science department. Trust is the kind of thing that springs back and forth. Ultimately, I think all teachers have a lapse in judgement from time to time to keep the gears turning.

It’s been a while. But after a longer hiatus than I thought, I’d like to say I’m back to posting TEACHER. I have a few strips in the chamber and I am not sure how long I can keep it up for since I am teaching full time again, but I will do my best.

The format of this comic may change from time to time so that I can post more often, but I have some other teachers’ stories coming up in the next few weeks, so look forward to that.

✨The Conosaurus convention database is live! ✨

Conosaurus is a database of indie & pop culture comic conventions and zine fests, built with exhibitors in mind. It’s still got a lot of growing to do, but John did an awesome job helping me build this cool thing over the course of the last 1.5 years. We’re very excited that it’s finally here!

Please check it out and share it with your convention tabling friends! We hope you like it!

RESTLESS MINDS: NIGHTMARES!

This year’s theme is Nightmares, Fear, and Suspense! I’m looking for comics and illustrations that have to do with nightmares, your fears, a scary story, or something suspenseful! It can be a personal story or something to simply send a shiver down your spine!

Back at it again. This weeks strip was inspired by another teacher friend of mine and I asked if I could use his likeness (he agreed) because using my likeness all the time is a bit overly self-serving, I think. I’d like to start moving more in this kind of direction; I’d still like to use myself as a character, but I will do my best to highlight all different kinds of stories and experiences too.

Also hoping to do a bit of work on educational policy…could be very relevant or irrelevant come Thursday.

Lastly, I’m going to take a few weeks off to cool down and work on some other projects. See you then!

For the record, I am not this sports illiterate. There was a time where I watched games, and collected cards and such, but I ended up gravitating towards other interests for some reason. I tend to see sports fandom and other fandom as being one in the same, although some tend to be defensive that their fandom is not as ridiculous as some other fandom-it seems sort of contrived if you ask me.

School sports are pretty important to students, though. Whether it be a marching band or just an event where kids can get out of the house with a purpose other than loitering around a mall entrance way (I only assume kids still do this) they hold an important place in a community. The larger question is here, where do they fit in academics? Is “No pass, no play” or no problem? It’s hard to say…

A surprise early update this week?! Not really much to say other than this always seems to be a tangential topic of conversation. Education and public service can be a tough gig that way; I mean, how do you even gauge investment in education?

Evening! Those who follow me here (though there may be few) may recall I took a hiatus from December till late January. I was actually working very hard on comics but of a different sort.

For past year, I’ve been co-curating an art exhibition at UMass Amherst for politically engaged graphic novels. We were even in the paper this week, check it out here. We have over 100 pieces of original artwork from very important comics!

Anyhow, It’s pretty rad and I can talk a lot more about it at another time; however, to continue with that theme, here is a strip I started on November 9th. I was struggling to find a way to finish in a response to the election from an education perspective. After witnessing the vigor and strength so many have displayed already, I figured out how I wanted to end it. I do hope you enjoy it.

I took a bit longer break than I thought I was going to. Not because I didn’t have the material to post, but because there were some things going on (good but stressful) that I just couldn’t promise any kind of consistency.

I have been co-curating a political graphic novel exhibit at the University of Massachusetts and we are almost ready to open the exhibit! There is art from over 30 books and comics with themes like: Gender, Sexuality, Race, Holocaust, Memory, Genocide, Media, and Direct Action. Here’s some more info: http://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/herter-art-gallery-host-%E2%80%9Cdirect-action

It’s very exciting and it’s been quite a lot of hard work. I should have more consistent pages from now on though.

P.S. This is maybe my favorite page of this comic so far.

My platonic partner suffered a traumatic brain injury a little over two years ago and is unable to work. They only have enough money left in savings to cover one more month’s rent, so things are pretty dire. My room is leased separately, so all they have to cover is their own, but that’s still difficult when you have no money coming in… and they can’t do art commissions like me! Boosts are very much appreciated, even if you can’t contribute.

Built On Strange Ground is a non-fiction comic anthology of real cursed locations, haunted towns, eccentric neighbors and local lore.

Have you ever lived someplace odd? Is there a house on your block that everyone avoids? A place where mysterious disappearances keep happening? Have you walked in a forest where voices are sometimes heard from the trees? Does your neighbor receive letters in a language that no one has seen before? Is there a highway out of town that some cars never get off of? We want to hear your stories.

Personal experiences are best, but friend-of-a-friend stories or pieces of historical nonfiction are also welcome. We’re especially interested in stories about the strange and unknown, but they don’t necessarily need a paranormal element. We’re looking for any stories you have about weird locations and strange locals.

This is a non-fiction anthology, meaning we want stories based on real people, places and experiences. It’s all right if your submission is about something of dubious validity, like a local legend or rumor, but it should not be a work of fiction.

Solo creators and writer-artist teams of all experience levels are welcome to submit pitches. Accepted stories will be paid $50 a page. If you are interested in contributing, send your pitches here.

The deadline for pitches is March 15th, 2017. You can submit more than one, but try to narrow it down to two or three at the most. We want to hear the stories you’re really interested in telling.

Safe travels, everyone.
