I had another crazy story today! Spencer caught a pigeon at street level while I was flying him from a rooftop. That’s a terrifying scenario because people on the streets can be crazy and will often try to kick or beat a hawk to “save” something that it has caught. Hawks are fragile and can easily be fatally injured if they take a hit. Since I was on the roof it took me a couple minutes to get down to him, the whole time praying that I wouldn’t find him injured or dead. Well, when I got down there I found him with this man hovering over him. The man asked if he was my bird and I said he was, and asked him if he was alright.

The man replied with “yeah he’s alright. A guy over there was trying to kick him and I told him ‘you better leave this hawk alone or I’m gonna best your ass!’” And I’ve never been more grateful for the actions of a stranger. This guy likely saved my birds life and I’m so lucky that he happened to be there at the right time, like a homeless guardian angel.

Today could have ended very differently if it weren’t for him. I wish I had something to give him but the best I could do was to let him pet Spencer while he ate and tell him how much it meant to me that he protected him. He seemed enamored. If I ever see him again in the future I’ll be sure to buy him lunch.

Forgot to post this here, oopsie! Tuco tore through his moult and is back out flying.

A moult seems to have done him good. He's been introduced to flying with Cyrus as a cast and they've gotten on like a house on fire, Cyrus finally gets his wish of being top dog!

Tuco still needs a lot of time and work in some regards but he really has made incredible progress. What a good boy.

What an awesome little boy! So glad he is doing better for you guys!

How did you go about working on them flying as a cast? Are they housed or weathered somewhere where they can see each other?

“Make Sure You Get My Good Side” Bateleur Eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) at the World Bird Sanctuary.

Photography by @z00logistintraining

This eagle’s name translates from French to mean “tumbler”, due to the bird’s astonishing acrobatic abilities and characteristic flight patterns. When gliding, a bateleur eagle tends to rock its wings slightly from side to side, almost like a performer trying to keep their balance. They also have a dramatic courtship display, where both male and female will perform steep dives and barrel rolls.

I was out looking for birds today and came face-to-face with an Osprey. Got my 5MR bird count up to at least 55, need to figure out all the weird ducks I saw (some of them look like a species I saw in Africa), but tentatively, I’m almost to 60!

Mr. Grumpy gills (Spencer, the Harris hawk) might look and act sassy, but he’s such a crowd pleaser! No fear, will fly right over heads, run through people’s feet, catch things in the air, and allow pets at the end of the flight while he’s eating. All this while still being a demon on pigeons! He’s my star player and I hope he’ll be on my abatement team for years to come
