West Hall is Colgate's oldest surviving building. Built in 1827 by faculty and students who also quarried the stone, the grey limestone exterior was described at the time as "plain, well-designed and constructed and . . . of strict economy.” This photo, from circa 1884, includes students from the classes of 1880 to 1887. In 1890, the school name would change from Madison University to Colgate University.

“Portrait of St. Mark”, Artist not specified. Hand-colored drawings from Book of Hours for the use of Lisieux (Normandy). France: Rouen School, late 15th century (1480s).

The identities of the artists who created the images in this Book of Hours are unknown, but their labors would have spanned hours as the text, drawings, and coloring were all completed by hand. This image depicts one of the saints of the Gospels with his symbolic animal: St. Mark and a lion.

In Fall of 2019, Special Collections and University Archives at Colgate University, part of the Colgate University Libraries, presented an exhibit of reproductions of illustrations from our rare book collections. It proved to be one of our most popular exhibits, liked by visitors, faculty, staff, and students. When Colgate’s campus opens again, we hope you’ll stop by and see it.

Creatures, Real and Imagined

Reverend F.O. Morris was an Irish clergyman who studied and wrote about natural history. “An instinctive general love of nature, that is, in other words, of the works of God, has been implanted by Him, the Great Architect of the universe — the Great Parent of all — in the mind of every man. There is no one, whether old or young, or of whatever circumstances or rank in life, who can look without any feeling or emotion on the handiworks of Creation which surround him — who can behold a rich sunset, a storm, the sea, a tree, a mountain, a river, a rainbow, a flower, without some degree of admiration, and some measure of thought.” – Preface to the first edition of A History of British Butterflies (1853)     (SK)

Special Collections and University Archives, Colgate University Libraries, QL555.E5 M65 1871. Illustration by Francis Orpen Morris, 1810-1893, from “A natural history of British moths …” Lithograph produced by E. Brown, York; Newbald & Stead, York.

Colgate students attired in suits and ties drink Coca-Cola in the campus store, May 1949. The campus store moved from the basement of Stillman Hall to the basement of East Hall in the late 1930s. It provided students with necessities like ice cream, coffee, and cigarettes, and services such as button-sewing. It was a hub for card games -- and one of the only places on campus where the all-male student population could interact with women 😬 The store moved to the O'Connor Campus Center when it was opened in 1967. We're pretty keen on the Colgate penguin shown here... new mascot @colgateraiders !? #colgatescua #colgate200 #colgateuniversity #archivesofinstagram #universityarchives #sideeye (at Colgate University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwIEGuzBWJH/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pxxemllr3w8x

Lots of cheering here in Hamilton for our @colgatembb Patriot League champions playing their first round at the NCAA tournament today, at 2:45 PM EST. 🎉📣👏 . The last time the Raiders played in the tournament was in the 1996-97 season, when Adonal Foyle led the team to its second straight trip. . Foyle, a native of the Caribbean, was adopted by Colgate professors Joan and Jay Mandle. He played on the Hamilton Central School basketball team as a teen. At Colgate, he was coached by the late Jack Bruen and became the Raiders' all-time leading rebounder. He went on to play in the NBA for 11 seasons as a power forward for the Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic. . An author and political activist, Foyle has led a meaningful life outside of his basketball career. In 2001, he founded the national student organization Democracy Matters, which seeks to curb the effects of private money on politics. He has a number of published poems and books, including "Too Tall Foyle," a children's book based on his experiences growing up in the Caribbean and overcoming hardships while on a quest for an education and basketball career. . Foyle graduated from Colgate magna cum laude with a history degree. #gogate #marchmadness #colgatescua #colgate200 #colgateuniversity #colgate #universityarchives #archivesofinstagram (at Colgate University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvUF6ybBjnk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tmqx7e2kdybh

Happy birthday, Colgate! On March 5, 1819, the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York was granted a charter establishing its mission and purpose: to "educate pious young men." This is the organization (indeed, our 'founding fathers') which would become Colgate and this charter, held at the New York State Archives, is considered the University's founding document. On our 200th anniversary, reflect on this important moment and give thanks by stopping by the Memorial Chapel. (We hear there will be free pizza and a dashing Bicentennial winter accessory... ) #colgatescua #colgate200 #colgateuniversity #universityarchives #archivesofinstagram (at Colgate University) https://www.instagram.com/p/Buo1pcfBElp/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12mpq3q0cnwu1

Wowza, Colgate once had its very own subcritical nuclear reactor stashed in the basement of Lathrop Hall. C. A. Dana Professor of Physics Emeritus, Charles Holbrow, led students in the Physics and Astronomy Club through its construction which included clad slugs of unenriched uranium and an 80 Ci Pu-Be (plutonium beryllium) neutron source loaned by the federal Atomic Energy Commission. Installed in the basement of Lathrop Hall in 1968, the reactor was moved to the attic of McGregory during construction of the link between the halls. It was decommissioned in the 1990s, though Professor Holbrow held onto the 80 Ci Pu-Be until after 9/11, when the Department of Energy recalled all loans of plutonium. h/t to Sofia Beaufrand '22 and Visiting Assistant Professor of History and Bicentennial Research Fellow, Jennifer Hull, for this rediscovered history! #tbt #colgate200 #colgatescua #colgateuniversity #universityarchives #archivesofinstagram #science #nuclear (at Colgate University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuKa-NbhSoI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=72248mm0cuej

Don you recognize this Colgate University building? Probably not, unless you were around before 1956. Eaton Hall, home of the Colgate Theological Seminary (which transferred to Rochester, N.Y. in 1928), was erected in 1886 and contained classrooms, dormitories, and a chapel. The original tower was taken down in 1906 due to unsafe construction. The building was razed in 1956 make way for Dodge, Eaton, and Kendrick dormitories (in the present location of Curtis and Drake Halls). #tbt #colgate200 #colgatescua #colgateuniversity #colgate #archivesofinstagram #architecture #universityarchives #librariesofinstagram (at Colgate University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtlzaENBGMf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o9yglnmc13pc
