So I'm goy, correct me if wrong. But saying things like "from the river to the sea" isn't the usual "saying something ignorant" like you would if you're accidentally sounding racist

Saying antisemitic terms are fucking dogwhistles to get nazis to find you and agree with you and try to get you on their fucking side

That's why it's important to not spout off stupid shit and do basic research into antisemitic phrases and symbolism

That's why "from the river to the sea" isn't a dog whistle. It's a freaking bullhorn.

A dog whistle is something subtle that only certain in groups will recognize and isn't a direct call to violence, like the numbers 14 and 88.

"From the river to the sea" is a loud and direct call to violence.

I'm gonna link to the animations in case y'all either don't remember or have never heard of some of these.

A quick note: these were made in the 2000s. Comedy is subjective, there's some strong examples of dark and/or "lolz teh random" humor in these. Maybe some cultural blindness, too. That said, enjoy a time capsule of stuff made before/during the birth of Youtube, now hosted on Youtube.

There’s that post that’s like ‘everyone should get into a tiny niche fandom at least once’ fully agree, that was really fun -- but I would like to add that everyone should get into a fandom where their opinions run counter to major fanon because it really teaches you about sticking to your guns and trusting your interpretation of the text without having to rely on peer validation

because WHAT are people talking about sometimes

Fact 1: In most versions of Dungeons & Dragons, when infected – as opposed to natural-born – lycanthropes transform under the full moon, they assume the default alignment of their type during the ensuing mindless rampage.

Fact 2: In most versions of Dungeons & Dragons, the default alignment of werebears is Lawful Good.

Conclusion: When an infected werebear transforms under the full moon, they go on a mindless Lawful Good rampage.

you know when batmans "ears" go limp when he's sad (in batblob representation)

dukes signal helmet should have his kitty ears lay flat

duke should literally look like this

[Image ID: two photos of orange cats with their ears limp and pulled in towards their heads, their eyes are sad, like they are carrying the world on their little meatball heads]

Oh my gd how did you take such high quality photos of the signal that's literally him

Images from something I’m working on showing extant fanworks on different platforms and how they differ.

bro fandom hates women#fandom hates lesbians and queer women so fucking much#i mean the whole world does#but the whole world doesn’t also celebrate gay men to any degree so#the contrast

It’s true that fandom does not tend to write that much f/f fic, at least not in the majority female spaces, but it’s abjectly not true that fandom hates writing about women in general.

This misapprehension is exactly why I compiled stats in the first place.

(Now why so many queer women prefer to write m/m fic rather than f/f/f fic even when they may like other f/f content is a complex question, but “fandom hates women” is a stupidass take that nobody should still be posting in this day and age.)

this is interesting#my perception (which may be incorrect) is that wattpad and (definitely) ffn are much less in use nowadays#so i wonder if their stats reflect more the attitudes of the 2010s and 2000s

FFN was going strong and was much larger than AO3 for a long time. The porn purge in 2012 was the beginning of a shift towards AO3 being more active, but FFN’s popularity among non-m/m shippers has only really tanked in the last couple of years as the mid-fic ads have gotten too bad to handle.

Wattpad was reigning supreme until a couple of years ago also and, again, the shift was due to monetization efforts uses disliked. English speakers have started to trickle into AO3. Other languages are still firmly entrenched there.

AO3 surpassed FFN in new fic posting rate a while back, but I suspect Wattpad is still keeping pace.

I’d be really interested in seeing how these numbers change if you toss Spacebattles and Royal Road on the pile.

I poked at Spacebattles for five minutes once, but I don’t remember much. Is there a good way to get a list of the fic? I don’t even mean stats: I just mean a way to take a random sample and a way to estimate total fic count.

FFN and Wattpad both require hand-counting for ship stats, but they’re easy to take a random sample from because of how work URLs are set up.

All of the big three were up around 8-10 million last time I did a big stats project. Do Spacebattles and Royal Road have fic in that kind of quantity? Even including the medium-size archives like Media Miner probably wouldn’t do much to shift the stats because they’re like 400k, not multiple millions.

Using Royal Road’s advanced search to search for fanfiction with no other options marked gets me what looks like 5344 results, but I don’t use the site, so I don’t know if I’m missing anything. SpaceBattles Creative Writing forum lists 48.9K threads. I’m assuming some subset of those are fanfic and it’s one thread per fic and one fic per thread? The writing archive seems to have only a bit over 600 threads.

My sense is that nowhere outside of the big three is going to change that last pie chart. Of course, shipping stats for these two places would be interesting regardless.

Me on October 6, 2023: These Republicans saying that the left "hates America" are wrong! That's just Fox News crap. The Left just wants America to be more equitable and just.

Me since October 7, 2023, seeing leftists ally themselves with and cheer for Islamic terrorists, Russia, China, Syria, etc., deny or support their atrocities, and vilify Ukraine and other allies based solely on whether or not they are supported by or opposed to the US: Oh my god. Oh my god the Republicans were right. They do just hate America. They hate America so much that it's their only guiding principle. They'll support anything, murder or rape or anything, as long as it's perpetrated by groups or countries opposed to the US. They say they oppose Israeli "imperialism" and care for suffering Palestinians but then support Russia and vilify Ukraine. They don't care about Muslim minorities in China or China's machinations toward Taiwan or Yemenis suffering under the Houthis or an entire nation suffering in Syria. They don't care about anyone suffering they just hate America. Oh my god.

It wasn't just Republicans saying this. Libertarians had been saying it for a while too, but got ignored as well.

Yeah, but Libertarians are just Republicans who want to smoke weed, so that's a distinction without a real difference.

What was shocking to me was realizing how many leftist, especially young leftists, seem to be almost a parody of what Fox News thinks leftists are.

They are less interested in improving people's lives than in finding who to blame for their problems. They think having the wrong identity makes you inherently a bad person. They think people who are oppressed should never have to take responsibility for anything.

Everything we've spent years or decades insisting leftists don't actually do or believe, there are now people pouring out of the woodwork, loudly proclaiming, "Yes, we do."

And I've come to a conclusion about these people.

These are not people who are leftists because they've read the theory, carefully thought through what it was saying, and what they did and did not agree with, and developed their beliefs.

These are people who grew up hearing about what a leftist was--maybe from their family, maybe from their community, maybe from Fox News-- and that a leftist is the worst thing a person can be. Then, at some point, they realized that their family or community or the news was full of shit. They looked at all the flaws in the ideas that they were raised with, and decided, if these people are wrong, then the correct answer must be whatever they hated most--a leftist.

Except that they never take the further step of asking, "was my family (or community, or the news) wrong about what leftist believe."

That part they never question.

The reason so many of them seem to be a Fox News version of a leftist is that's exactly what they are.

Imagine how it was realizing that FoxNews are amongst THE VERY FEW AT ALL that actually nail the News.
