On the Congee Episode, why it is Congee, and why IT SHOULD BE Congee.

I keep telling you people it’s not SOUP.

OK so now we have beautiful episode gifs of this latest episode in which our Kyoru hearts went overdrive.

and yes these pics:

What Kyo made is 「お粥」 or 「おじや」 which means rice porridge/gruel, or its one word equivalent:

CONGEE.

In a way I associate congee with moms (my mother cooked this whenever I’m sick, and this chapter in the manga hit me with the nostalgic feels) so yeah, I feel the word ‘soup’ is inadequate as it can be any kind of soup, while congee is something I grew up with. I asked some Japanese friends about this and they grew up with 「お粥」 or 「おじや」 as well. It might be just cultural nostalgia on my part though, but I really don’t want this simplified as it’s a turning point in the story.

Also notice who’s behind Kyonkyon in this panel

I keep emphasizing this before as well but the green stuff Kyonkyon put in the congee is definitely Chinese chives. It’s that chives have a stronger flavor than leeks or scallions, and Tohru, who is sick, can taste them better, in my opinion.

Also Kyonkyon cooking Tohru mom comfort food using the stuff he so avoids (see pic above). That’s… a nice thought.

P.S. I headcanon Kyonkyon using chicken stock for this congee. As for the reason… manga readers will know what I’m talking about, and anime-onlys will probably know the reason in Season 2.

I know that, within the context of the episode this is going to be a more serious moment, but just looking at these screenshots has me laughing! 😂

Haru is only like 5-6 and already doesn't want to be there. Also, Ritsu is confirmed to be wearing a dress! In the manga we only ever saw the top part of Ritsu's outfit, so it was unclear if the outfit was a dress or not. The inclusion of the tie is interesting, it feels almost like a transition period for Ritsu. Also, with that short hair cut, Ritsu really resembles Kisa. Ritsu is also right around the age when we first get introduced to Kisa too (11 - 12).

Then this next pic:

Hatori looks so done, lol. Momiji attached himself to Hatori right from the start and likely didn't let go through the whole thing. Hatori probably just wanted to be left alone like the (probably) angsty 17-ish year old that he was. Poor Hatori, lol.

I like how this scene reinforces certain character connections and bonds, such as Momiji always having been fond of Hatori, Rin having a certain closeness with Shigure (who did what I always did at family get togethers as a teen - bring a book), Kagura and Ritsu being friends, and Kureno looking at Yuki next to Akito, and eventually ending up in Yuki's place (right next to Akito's side). They are both the only two sitting seiza style in that shot.

The anime really brings these New Year scenes together, there is less of a disjointed feeling. I just really enjoy how realistic this moment feels to the usual family gathering type of event.
