Hello Fic Readers!

I am here to convince you that you want to read my new Alphabet of Samcedes Stories. (It’s one story for each letter of the alphabet, thus the name of the series.)

I am super excited about this series, and even though it’s a less-popular ship than some others, I really think these will appeal to a wide variety of readers, even if you’ve never read Samcedes, never shipped Samcedes, or honestly even if you’re not a Gleek.

I started shipping them because of who they were as individuals: a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants from life, and a dorky, hopeless romantic who adores her and is willing to do whatever it takes. When they decided to spend a week apart (without talking) to think through some things, they both ended up watching the clock to count down the last seconds until they could be back together. They faced distance, discrimination, dating other people, and everyone around them saying that it couldn’t work, but they kept gravitating toward each other anyway. And they always built each other up and supported each other’s dreams, even if it was hard. THAT is the love story I adored, and wanted to retell in 26 new ways.

These are love stories of all sorts. New love, established love, steamy love, cuddly love, childhood best friends, and parents.

The stories are fluffy, funny, and every once in a while there’s a little (just a little) bit of angst.

There are friends-to-lovers stories, enemies-to-lovers stories, and star-crossed lovers stories.

You’ll find modern settings (high school, Broadway, neighbors, dentists, kitchen witches, and assassins). There is fantasy, science fiction, fairy tales, and a touch of the supernatural, as well as references to Greek mythology, Doctor Who, and Firefly.

I hope you will take a look!  They are all posted here. I have several posted so far, and will keep posting several per week until they are finished. Every story is different and stands alone, and I’m pretty sure there is something for everyone in here.

I'm not really one for angst but this is short enough that it's ok. And just lovely.

I wish that ao3 had an option to filter warnings (and tbh certain authors) out like I will never ever want to read it and just seeing it puts me off so much that often I end up closing my browser because that content upsets me so much lmao

There is a way to do this but I can’t recall how to do it. it’s something you type into the box for “other filters” or something, I don’t remember. who knows?? It’s not a great option, and I don’t know if you can sort out authors that way, but it’s better than nothing if someone can reblog this with how to do it!

Alrighty friends! It takes some specificity, but you can do this. Let me show you how!

So I started with going to the Sherlock (TV) section of Ao3. On the right we find this lovely section! ((I know I’m going over things you already probably know, but I figure this post may go to new Ao3 users, so bear with me.))

Underneath this, I chose sort by Kudos, because that’s a quick way to find most popular fics, for the sake of this demonstration. 

With those filters on, we end up with this being our first two results: 

As you can see, we have Nature and Nurture by earlgreytea68, and The Internet Is Not Just For Porn by cyerus. So what if I am utterly sick of seeing earlgreytea68 on my list? Let’s pretend I’ve read all their fics, or that I just don’t like her, or whatever. I want this author out. I go to this section on the right: 

In “Search within results” I type earlgreytea68 into the bar, with a minus sign in front. This gives me the following page, upon hitting the sort and filter button:

There goes earlgreytea68! But now I’ve decided that Crack is just not my thing, I’m sick of that, too, for heaven’s sake, I want something reasonable in my gay slash fanfiction about detectives that solve crimes about glowing dogs and irish megalomaniacs. Heaven forbid this get ridiculous.

Well, then I add this to my search:

Which gets rid of everything with that tag. My results are now:

Performance in a Leading Role is now my first result!

You can do this as many times as you want; the biggest problem I have is trying to filter out multi-worded tags. For example, “Secret Relationship” is hard to filter. Better to go with authors you dislike or with words like “DubCon”. 

I hope this helps! Also remember that googling site:archiveofourown.org and then adding search terms will mean google searches Ao3 for you, and sometimes that works far better.

You can filter out phrases by enclosing them in quotes. For example, if ABO and Hydra Trash Party are not your things, try:

-“alpha/beta/omega dynamics” -”hydra trash party”

Say, you’re in your random fandom- I went with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since I’ve been reading Iron Man stuff recently. Tony Stark is awesome.

But anyway, you’re on the page, and you see that there are 174,774 works! That is way too many for a casual afternoon’s browsing.

And you see that the first one is Peter Parker/Tony Stark and that is not your jam. It doesn’t work for you, or it squicks you, whatever. Wouldn’t life be easier if you could browse without seeing that pairing (or whatever pairing you don’t like)? You can!

First, click on that pairing tag(You may want to open this in another tab, actually.):

and it’ll take you to the page for that pairing tag. Click this button:

and then look at the address bar! The actual page is unimportant. Copy the numbers located here:

and go back to the original search page! Down on the side, in the same place you can get rid of other tags, type -relationship_ids:”the number you just copied”

Then hit ‘sort and filter’ annnd… magic!

The fics with that pairing are gone! You can also do multiple pairings, get rid of any tags you don’t like, and sort it by date or length or kudos, or whatever.

I’d just like to add that these sorts of search modifiers ALSO WORK IN GOOGLE AND MOST RESEARCH DATABASES. The more you know.

This idea came to me when I woke up first thing this morning.

Klaine one-shot - “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” (Rated PG13)

Relentlessly bullied by Karofsky, Azimio, and Puck, Blaine is given the option of either taking a beating, or kissing Kurt Hummel, the infamous leader of McKinley’s Skanks. Blaine can’t deny that he’s always fantasized about kissing Kurt, but whereas messing with the jocks will get his face flattened, crossing paths with Kurt may just get him killed. 

But what a way to go ;) (3597 words)

This doesn’t really have a time period, but I wrote it as if it were set in the 80s. It’s not obvious. It’s kind of in the details. Dedicated to @hkvoyage who has always been so supportive of me trying to cram as many Klaine Advent Drabbles as possible into my December fics. I think I got up to “part” with this one xD Also, I don’t really name The Skanks aside from Lauren, but my thinking is Santana, Brittany, Quinn, Lauren, Tina, and some other sixth person. Maybe Mercedes? I don’t know. Warning for angst, bullying, mention of bullying related violence. Skank Kurt Hummel. Nerd Blaine Anderson.

Blaine flies across the tile floor like a rag doll, passed off from jock to jock until he reaches his final destination – the single foot of space between the last sink and the bathroom wall. After months of being tossed around like a sack of potatoes, he’s learned that bracing for the fall hurts worse than just letting it happen. If he’s limp, he runs less of a chance of breaking an ankle, or a wrist, which would devastate him considering the fact that he’s a musician. Any damage to his hands would wreck his life far longer than the lunch hour these guys plan on torturing him.

I'm not sure what brought that on, but I loved it

my favorite thing about au fanfiction the sheer range of it. how like sometimes the tag is like “alternate universe- they’re werewolf space pirates in charge of stopping their planet from being blown up by ancient immortal aliens from another realm” and sometimes it’s “alternate universe- chefs”

I hate when people who are new to a fandom/ship ask for fic recs and are IMMEDIATELY shut down by someone snarkily saying “Just go to AO3 and search then filter by kudos duhhhhhh 🙄”

Because that’s a fucking stupid way to find good fic.

Because sometimes, the most kudo’d fics??? Aren’t the best fics. Or even the most in character or canon-compliant. They’re just the fics that have been around the longest, that were written while the fandom was still young and the show new and these are the “fandom favorites” but they may not be all that great.

I want the fic that has half those kudos but spot on characterization that I wouldn’t find by searching for the “most kudos”. I want the fic that hasn’t gotten that much love and you’re screaming by the time you get done because holy shit!!! What an amazing fic!!! I want to hear what someone else liked and why. I want to take the path less traveled when it comes to fic because that is new and exciting and a breath of fresh air and a new take that, unfortunately, no one reads because when people look for fic, they go by kudos.

So yeah. Rant over.

Also annoying when people make rec lists that might as well just be a list of the top 10 most-kudos’d fics, and every single rec list looks exactly the same. If you’re going to bother with a rec list, either go with a specific theme (not just a pairing, especially if that pairing has more than like 1000 fics for it) or try to rec stuff that you think deserves way more kudos/hits than it already has. And as for just browsing in AO3, I like to pick a kudos threshold (500, 1000, whatever - type “kudos>500” or whatever in the “search within results” box) and sort by date posted. That way you see the stuff that didn’t just spend three years slowly accumulating kudos by virtue of existing, it burst onto the scene and people loved it so much it shot to the top. Either that, or I look for stuff with not many hits but a good number of kudos per hit - so, say, (for zimbits, which has a higher kudos/hit ratio than Sherlock or SPN, so you’d have to adjust for those fandoms) “hits<2000 kudos>300” to find stuff that hasn’t gotten much attention, but the people who did read it liked it.

Klaine fic - “Underneath the Magic” (Rated PG13)

Kurt, a tree demon, runs a magical, supernatural circus that, unfortunately, is in the red. Trying to come up with a way to keep them afloat, his right hand man … uh, goblin … convinces Kurt to hire some new acts. Kurt reluctantly agrees, as long as that new act isn’t human.

Enter Blaine - the human conman who’s about to try and change Kurt’s mind. (10511 words)

So, this started life in a number of different ways. I wanted to write some stuff for @sunshineoptimismandangels, for her birthday, and at the time, I had started writing this as an original piece, inspired by @vampireisabitstrong’s “Graveyard Book au” which I was also writing at the time. But after a while, I had to come to grips with the fact that I was writing Glee characters. The character of Puck, in particular, was inspired in part by sunshine’s character of Felix from her amazing story Heartstone (whom she’s reluctant to admit is a goblin, but I know better xD) Also, Kurt is a Spriggan, but I added hints of Kapre as a nod to Darren’s Filipino heritage. I hope you all enjoy. Please let me know. And no, if you’re curious, I wasn’t smoking anything when I wrote this xD
