Cultivating Creativity. Raising Visions

Alternative Facts?

It was meant to be a joke for #DS106 daily create #tdc2007, “Invent your own imaginary dataset.”-not so fictitious afterall.  Using Google’s new Trends Visualization Tool was not as easy-peasy as it looked. What was supposed to be 10 minutes turned into 120 minutes.

Had I stayed with the original option of “%” - no problem. But try and create a data set with the “+” option, and you get this annoying “&nbsp” hanging out with the left side visualization.  I tried all sorts variations to get it to work; even opening the GIF in Photoshop and removing the offending layers. I wasn’t attentive enough to what I was doing, and my intended “clean” GIF turned out to be a little too clean, with blank frames that meant I would have to go back in and manually select the good layers again (some 400 of them). Nope- decided against that.  Finally I gave up and decided to write this post about it instead of making it perfect.

Then came the low res vs. high res option for downloading the GIF. I could again take it into Photoshop and resize the high res version, or I could take another 5 minutes to download the low res as well. I opted to download again... but that ended up taking longer than needed too.

From Google:

Pro-tip #1: the high resolution download takes longer but it’s better quality for social sharing.

Pro-tip #2: Leave the window open on your desktop while it’s creating the gifs as it will do so quicker.

I thought I would save time by writing this post while it was downloading.  (Didn’t believe the pro-tips yet.) Sure enough, it was painfully slow.

WHAT?! I attach the new HiRes version and now it works????? I give up.  Time to go dancing. :-)

Rockylou’s Growlery

Movin’, groovin’ and havin’ fun on the social dance floor is my “place of refuge or retreat when out of sorts or ill-humored.” Creating videos in my studio of dancing is a double growlery extravaganza. See me in action below, dancing with my private instructor, Troy Lerum.

What is it? Well you could just draw what the word means to you…but here is a definition: “growlery grou-‘ler-ē noun; a place of refuge or retreat when one is out of sorts or in ill-humor.”

What does yours look like? Show us in a sketch, photo or any way you like. It may not be a physical place.

The #DS106 Monolith

And, what are we supposed to do with this thing? Play with it, of course. The DS106 Daily Create is celebrating its 2001th daily create with the prompt:

“Today is another marker, our 2001st DS106 Daily Create. Create an image that mashes up the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey with DS106. “

This mash-up and remix started with a previous daily create of mine posted to Flickr, tdc609 “What do we do with this thing?”. Where I created an image showing the coolness of a refrigerator. I then pulled the DS106 png image from the DS106 website and using Photoshop added it as a new layer to the artwork already on the fridge.  Rockylou’s three R’s of DS106: Remember, Reuse and Remix.

Rockylou Rising

After 26 years I’ve left Corporate America, imparting on a new journey, returning to my first love: teaching.  In the Spring of 2019 I will have my MN high school chemistry teaching license, and will be joining the ranks of the talented creative educators throughout the #DS106 online community. #4Life

Crossing a new threshold today with the 2000th DS06 Daily Create! Create any kind of image, meme that describes a milestone you reached and passed.

Where’s the Reference?

PBS asked for 6 years, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" Since 2012 Alan Levine has been asking, "Where's the reference?" He's even offering a $120 reward if you can prove or disprove this "60,000 times faster" urban legend.

Read all about it here. cogdogblog.com/2017/05/60000-nmc/

"I've been chasing down this media since 2012, the oft repeated, ever powerpointed, book printed “fact” that “humans process images 60,000 times faster than text."

I’ve been at it a while (the 2001 3M reference is a shimmering illusion, it is just a brochure) in a series of blog posts. Readers have peppered presenters who insist on echoing the claim.

Still to date, there is no documented study, research, or even person who can cite the origin of this claim.

Doesn’t this keep you up at night?

I have chased this beast back to 1982, the earliest claim I have found is a 1982 ad insert to Business Week attributed to Philip Cooper, then president of a media company."

Talky Tina is Ready to Take a Ride

Thanks to a call put out by @iamtalkytina, the DS106 community is nearing the end of a 30 day Daily Create challenge for June 2017.   If we do all 30 Daily Creates we will earn our very own “DS106 Certified Creatorist” badge.  Today’s prompt TDC1997 was to “Show us your bicycle, or someone else’s bicycle, or just something about bicycles.” If we are playing by the rules, (not something DS106 is good at) you should be making something new everyday. But that doesn’t prevent me from remixing a previous project.  For today I took a GIF with a BMX I had made for the #GifFight two years ago. I then added Talky Tina by using the magic wand tool in Photoshop to extract her from her post, “Get Your Wiggle On”.  The TalkyTina layer was added to the 1st animation frame in the BMX GIF and used the “Save For Web (Legacy)” function to create the new GIF.

Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing

This is only the 2nd time I’ve personally been faced with an ethical dilemma in the 4 years I’ve been playing with the #DS106 online community. Today’s daily create “#tdc1995 These Photos Need A Story In Captions” presented us with a set of 4 photos of a frog and beetle with the prompt to provide creative DS106 worthy captions. I happily went about creating a cute, joy-filled interaction between the two critters; Tweeted my response; Something to the effect of everything is great and fun playing with my ds106 friends. (Below is my response with the original images blurred.)

Then.... the realities of the rest of the world I live in hit me square in the face. I read the post by @mdvfunes who wrote a sobering editorial: “Well, who knew?” She quoted:

“…while these photos would be very amusing if the photographer had stumbled across such incidents, the simple fact of the matter is that these animals do not engage in these behaviours naturally; These photos have almost certainly been staged, and have almost certainly resulted in the animal being distressed, injured, or worse.”. The cruel cost of cute

I was aghast. My heart sank. I felt bad, icky inside.  To make it worse, I even had thoughts running around in my head, wanting to justify why it was okay for me to post my work- out of pure ego self-centeredness because I didn’t want all of that work I’d put in go to waste.

Happily, my ethics won out and I deleted my tweet with the newly realized distasteful, offending images.  Sometimes we are simply unaware that our actions (or inactions) are inadvertently harming/taking advantage of/disrespecting others. (See Alan Levine’s post “Lonely Attribution”) When we are enlightened, we have an opportunity to take action. Start over. Do the “right thing”.

I did just that.  I deleted everything. I found a creative, ethically sound alternative. (Thanks to @cogdogblog, Alan Levine’s HUGE Flickr photo collection.)  I made a new 4 panel series of animal photos where I knew for certain no animals were harmed in the taking of the photos. And I was confident in using and remixing the images in exchange for giving attribution to the photographer.

Here’s the new image. Please feel free to use it for today’s daily create if you have been enlightened like I have, and your ethical core is standing up and asking you to do what’s right.

Here’s my new, ethically responsible response to today’s daily create “#tdc1995 These Photos Need A Story In Captions” .  I feel much better now.

Planet Mondas106

A new planet was recently discovered by the crew of the DS106 during their #30dayTDC mission to the outer reaches of the internet. The planet has been named, Mondas106 by captain @Rockylou22.

A description of  Mondas106:

The planet Mondas106, is an earth-like planet in a densely populated solar system with twenty-five other planets.

Mondas106 is about 27.8 times bigger than Earth and its gravity is about 14.24 times that of Earth.

A single day lasts 21.93 hours and a year lasts 481 days. The planet is made up of 12 continents, which make up 74% of the planet's landmass. 3 moon(s) orbit the planet and Mondas106 itself orbits a yellow sun in an elliptic orbit.

The plant-like organisms on this planet are mostly tall shrubs and trees, many of which have a surprising amount of different colors. Some even have strong scents. The small amount of flowers that do exist share these characteristics, but almost all of them are tiny. While there are a good amount of fungi on this planet, most of them have little to no color, but they have the strongest scent of all organisms, most of which are horrible.

In terms of development and specialization the species on this planet aren't very impressive, but their shapes and colors make for astonishing natural works of art and many already show great promise of a highly specialized natural balance for the distant future.

The underwater plants too are not much more than the very basic lifeforms you'd expect on young planets, but their colors are suprisingly varied and bright. A handful of species is already showing the first steps to higher organism forms, but they have still a long way to go.

You will not find any intelligent life forms on this planet, but that doesn't take anything away from the astonishing beauty of the life forms it does have. Insects, reptiles, amphibians, fish and even the first baby steps to mammals can be found on this planet. The insects have evolved the most out of these species, but the amphibians have evolved into the most varied and surprising species.
