‘Live Your Truth’ is More Than We Thought
This video has… rocked our fandom. It reveals Dan with a desire to be more authentic with his life, Dan questioning his actions and intentions for the year. He’s very open in this video about the things that offer him happiness, which is mostly what we’ve focused on. There’s more to this video, though. A notable phrase he gives us is to ‘live your truth’.
Now, I’m here to tell you that there’s more to that phrase than we initially thought.
Queer Eye (2018) is a Netflix original series, in which a group called the ‘Fab Five’ make transformations in people’s lives. While the show is based on an external transformation - “wardrobes, grooming, diet, cultural pursuits, and home décor” - it often cuts down to a deeper, emotional level.
Dan and Phil are watching Queer Eye. Dan mentioned it in his last liveshow. Phil liked a tweet related to it. They’re watching it.
I believe that Queer Eye was one of Dan’s inspirations for his latest video with sharing parts of his life (and sexuality). Specifically, Episode 4 - ‘To Gay or Not Too Gay’.
This episode is set apart from the other episodes because it’s based around Anthony AJ Brown, a gay man who wishes to come out to his stepmother (usually they transform a straight man’s life). It’s relevant for a few reasons, but mostly because the final chapter is titled ‘LIVING YOUR TRUTH’.
Dan and Phil are watching this show. Dan’s latest video is titled ‘Trying to Live My Truth’. You see where I’m going with this, right? (I know, I fucking gasped when I saw it).
When I watched Dan’s video back, I noticed he even included Antoni Porowski (one of the Fab Five members, lower right corner) in his video.
In the video he states he wants to “embrace the truth of who he really is”, and I think these gradual steps are important with being his authentic self and connecting to his audience.
Take from this what you will, but I’m just really fucking excited and proud to see Dan growing as an individual with the information that he’s allowed us.
PS: I recommend watching Queer Eye if you have access to it. It’s a beautiful show.
