Lt. Col James Stewart received the French Croix de Guerre after flying 20 combat missions, July, 1944.  During World War II he was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Medal.

I feel like such an awful person. Cold and uncaring.

What a day it will be, when I can feel again. When I can be happy.

Ironically, I do feel something. The pangs of sadness, and the remnants of melancholy coursing through my body.

They only serve to fan the flame that is shame and pity.

Tell me: How long must joy be a stranger, before you let him in again? He makes his home in your heart, then before you know it, he gets shoved out onto the street. The spark that you had is suddenly gone. Where the joy lingered, now remains a pit: a sad homage of what it was.

You’re not the same person you used to be. Though you’ve changed some things for the better, some things got worse. You became small and depressed. You don’t let yourself out, or anyone in. You sit at home, pining for the joy to return, but it doesn’t look like it will.

Others may think you’ve got your life together, but you don’t. You can’t even begin to imagine what you’d like your life to be. And others will claim you fit in anywhere and are confident and funny. But the truth is, you fit in nowhere. You pretend to be confident to cope with your anxiety, and your jokes are wholly stolen from the dead.

Though this all seems bad, there is still hope:

You must get your joy back. That little spark of love and laughter that got you through everything.

For if you rediscover that spark, so too will you rediscover yourself.
