I’ve always loved the idea of the future because it’s an opportunity to escape the present,
but I never imagined a future with someone by my side
because people either leave or hold you back
and why fantasize the improbable
but you crawled into my daydream,
took a up the entire left side of the bed,
and I just couldn’t disturb you because you’re so cute when you sleep.
so here’s to a new future
because one day
I’ll touch your ribs like they’re piano keys
and tickling those ivories will take on a whole new meaning
and it won’t matter if the glass is half full or half empty
as long as you’re the one who filled it
we’ll lay on carpeted floors,
watching dust particles dance along to old records we’ve heard a million times
because we’re too broke to buy new ones
we’ll eat cereal for dinner on kitchen counters
in only our underwear
and we’ll laugh so hard we’ll blow milk out our noses
we’ll have races, appointing the shower as our finish line
we’ll wash each other’s hair and
between the bubbles and the water filled kisses,
I’ll find time to make fun of you for cleaning behind your ears
and as dusk creeps through the curtains, I’ll look down at our legs,
woven in and out of each other,
at your arms wrapped tightly around me,
and I’ll whisper into your collarbone,
“we used to dream about this moment”
