with all this anti-swiftie talk I want to do a quick shout-out to my older sister, who only liked taylor swift's early albums before saying in 2012 that swift's descent into pop from country made her a huge sell-out

Thinking of the larger context of LOTR and like, the fellowship swapping old war stories and shit and Sam just says “Yeah I killed a huge spider…Shelob, I think?”

And Gandalf just blinks and is like, “You what now?”

“Yeah, killed it. Had to save Frodo”

Gandalf elects not to tell Sam that he killed the spawn of a primordial demon.

the daughter of the embodiment of darkness which ate the original sun and moon and almost ate the devil.

That's not important. What is important is that it was a danger to Mister Frodo.

if were all catpeople there would be trans catboy forums devoted to how to dye over calico markings so you can pass better and another group of trans catboys who insisted that the only way to deal with it is to normalize catboys having calico markings. the discourse would be insane

meanwhile all the far right commentary catboy youtube channels would have videos titled ‘HAS “MALE CALICO” ACCEPTANCE GONE TOO FAR?’ with the thumbnail of some random calico catboy who was shown in 0.001 second of a popular clothing brand’s pride month ad

there would be a whole other discourse over why we should stop talking about calico catboys when no one knows the struggle of transitioning from a girl orange cat (cute) to a male orange cat (stupid)

As a young boy in school, Masaki Sashima would be dragged out of his classroom and beaten by his fellow students.

Masaki, now 72, was different to the other kids.

He was Ainu, an Indigenous people from the country's northern regions, most notably the large island of Hokkaido.

"During recess, the hallway door would open, and several guys would yell at me to come out," he said.

"I clung to my desk in the classroom and kept quiet.

"Everyone would surround me and beat me."

Japan has long portrayed itself as culturally and ethnically homogenous, something that some have even argued is a key to its success as a nation.

More than 98 per cent of Japanese people are descendants of the Yamato people.

But the Ainu are distinct, with their own history, languages, and culture.

But, as the victims of colonialism, assimilation, and discrimination, much of that identity has been lost.

An Ainu woman named Chiri Yukie wrote down some of her people's oral traditions into Japanese because, as a child, her people were being displaced by Japanese settlers in Hokkaido. Her language was disappearing, so she (ironically) saw translating the stories into Japanese as a way to preserve them. She died at age 19.

Some of the objects from the Ainu exhibition at Japan House in London this year, showcasing traditional Ainu skills and culture. There is a campaign to get Ainu recognised as an official language, at least in Hokkaido, and small steps are happening, for example, bilingual bus stops. It reminds me of the struggle for Welsh to be revived after suppression for centuries.

taylor swift’s work wouldn’t be nearly as insufferable if she wasn’t constantly trying to present herself as some sort of tortured underdog. like, okay, she has endured hardships, and a lot of people, especially white men, are shitty towards her for purely misogynistic reasons. that sucks, i agree. but she’s never been an underdog before. she was born to well-off parents who did everything they could to start her music career when she was barely even a teenager, an opportunity that lots of people would kill for. now she’s extremely famous and wealthy, and everything she releases is destined to sell millions of copies and receive glowing reviews in nearly every publication. she is not an underdog, and i have trouble believing she’s particularly “tortured.” she’s not even an alcoholic, despite claiming to be one on the opening track of her new album! people like to defend her lyrics by saying she’s just playing a character, which i don’t believe for a second, but even if she was, i don’t think i want to listen to someone like swift play the character of a tortured underdog, not when there’s so many musicians out there who are actually tortured underdogs. it comes across as hollow. “you wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me,” sung by one of the wealthiest, most famous, most critically acclaimed musicians in the world, who was born to loving parents who personally helped her start her career, who once said she’d never been to therapy because she “just feels very sane.” if you’re going to play a character, maybe pick one who we’re not supposed to pity.

While we wait for a second printing of my book, here's a new comic l've been working on in between other projects that I finally finished. This is actually my longest comic ever, at just under 40 pages. 😵‍💫 I'll be sharing more parts of it this week but of course you can read the whole thing early for just a buck! Here!

Here's part 2! Part 3 coming tomorrow but you can read the whole thing early here!

Not saying anything new here but my personal take on a lot of pop therapy/garbage psychology happening now is that it’s designed to remove or soothe feelings of accountability from the person seeking the treatment, because in our increasingly antisocial world everyone wants to be told that they are Good and Okay rather than figure out how to navigate our complex social relationships in a way that is better for us and those around us. So that’s how you get wild misinterpretations of things like narcissistic personality disorder (where suddenly everyone who has ever wronged you is a narcissist). And it does not surprise me in the least that doing inner child work has also become about creating a fictional alternative self that has a child’s impulses who you have to appease or can heal by treating YOURSELF like a child LOL…when in fact it’s the exact opposite of that and the whole point is to realize you’re accountable for your own adult behavior and have to stop doing behaviors which you learned in childhood & which no longer serve you
