so i stumbled across some songs from barbie movies in the late 80s and found that the songs were released on various tapes, some came with actual barbie dolls but eventually one with the soundtracks to two films was released. it's kind of hard to find all the information on them in one place, but this is one of the best songs i've heard this year so far.. it's not on any music-archiving sites, but i'm hoping to change that. it's sweet to think about how this would probably trigger a series of memories for any gen x mothers who heard it.
barbie and the sensations.. barbie and the rockers.. it's all such fun and saccharine pop music! it's very stereotypically 80s, like, you know how people all have this build up idea of the "80s sound" in their head, the cheesy synths and guitars and so on; well, I feel like *most* 80s music usually fails to meet those standards, but this certainly doesn't. i am thinking that film soundtracks really contributed to the 80s sound stereotype more than anything, the most "cheesy" tracks that pop into people's minds when they think of the 1980s tend to be associated with famous film scenes.. but i feel like this tape is what my mother would consider peak 80s. this song in particular is my favorite. some other tracks sound like james ferraro would have a field day with sampling them. maybe i'll watch the actual animated films soon.
