Foul Seed & Bitter Herb

These fouls seeds do fill the air~

Three fruit of belladonna, Seventeen caps of henbane seeds. Two feathers of a raven’s wing, and a clutch of nightshade leaves.

The smoke burns high, the veil grows thin, the dancers come from deep within.

The demons laughter, the shallow sound of sky filled hooves, and Odin’s hounds.

The Sluagh tear and twist the way the hunter hunts his pious prey.

We know All Hallow’s soon approaches the tide will turn as dark encroaches.

A handful of belladonna leaves its fruit just three, as it deceives. A merry troupe of hyoscyamus bells and two lost feathers the story tells.

The smoke burns high, the veil grows thin, the spirits come from deep within.

Of all the verdant gifts of nature, unto the artes and Wort Cunning of the West Country ‘Green Doctor’ and 'Old Mother Green Cap’, the Ash tree is perhaps the most magical potent and reputable in West Country tradition; it is of great use for matters of protection, love, and the removal of diverse ills. Carve on oak. Smear with your blood. Carve with a human finger bone or an unused knfe and read this: I carve you 8 asar, 9 naudir, 13 thursa [rune names]. You shall explode to great discomfort, I forbid your backside to fall apart; Now shit or explode. This should be done with a full moon.

Hi! I really love your blog, and I was wandering if you could help me find some sources on how did Slavs protect themselves from various evil creatures.

Oh my, that’s like a HUGE topic, and sources are rather scattered even in the Polish language (assuming you’re looking for resources in English).

I was trying to include some methods of protection in the series of posts about the mythological creatures, and some other informations you could most likely find under my Slavic customs tag. Many practices would be shamanic in nature. For the basics: important were some red accessories, salt, flour, chalk, candles of natural beeswax (or equivalent of modern gromnica, the so-called thunder candle), sharp objects, drawn circles, noise, smoke, many herbs (some might be described in the book “Polish Herbs, Flowers & Folk Medicine”), many magical symbols, rhytmical phrases and precise sequences of actions - it’s really too much to summarize quickly. You might find some informations in books like “Singing Back The Sun: A Dictionary of Old Polish Customs and Beliefs” or “Polish Customs, Traditions and Folklore”. Look also around the various pages listed in Wiki article about Polish mythology / Polish folk beliefs and similar ones about other Slavic countries - many have useful resources listed at their bottoms. You’ll also find a few bits in articles like “The transcendental side of life. Aquatic demons in Polish folklore” [pdf] or “Coexistence or Conflict? The Problem of Dual Belief in Polish Folklore”. I’d reccomend you to browse through other resources on the pages of Folklorica and Studia Mythologica Slavica. There’s surely tons to discover, hidden among other topics.

Overally, frankly speaking, I don’t know of many good resources written in English that would describe that topic comprehensively (focusing more on looking for resources in my native language). I myself would gladly see some recommendations for a future reference.

I could probably prepare an overview post and translate some informations from my Polish sources, but it would definitely take some time.

I need recommendations for sources on the magical properties of herbs and plants

Sources that arent wiccan or neopagan, ones that are preferably more historical or traditional, i.e. As found in Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Arab, and Baltic folk magic.

If anyone knows of any good ones id greatly appreciate it!

Liz then said, “This is whut the Devil wants the most: promise you won’t never preach no more, nor go to a 'ligious meetin. Then effen you git to be a witch, promise to do ennything you can to keep your pappy frum preachin' agin witches. Now, hit ain’t a goin’ to be easy, and I ‘low you mought have to try more'n onct afore you git in. Whatever happens, you have to foller 'structions zactly.” Jonas promised, “Yep, Liz. I'll do zactly whut I’m told to do.” So, following instructions, at midnight he sneaked into his father’s field and stole one of the black rams. He killed it and cut off its left horn, hiding the rest of the carcass in the woods. The next day being Sunday, he got a boy to steal a silver coin out of the collection plate of his father’s church. He melted down the coin and made it into a silver bullet, which he put to soak in toad's blood. He also went to Gladeville where he bought a pewter plate. Next, he scoured the hills until he found a spring whose stream flowed directly east. He then waited until Friday the thirteenth and returned to the spring as the morning turned gray over the ridge. He dipped some water from the spring with his ram's horn and poured it over the pewter plate. He did this seven times and repeated the verses Liz had taught him: AS I DIP THE WATER WITH A RAM ’ S HORN , CAST ME CRUEL WITH A HEART OF THORN , AS I NOW THE DEVIL DO MY SOUL LEASE. I RENOUNCE CHRIST AS MY SAVIOR , AND PROMISE THE DEVIL MY BEHAVIOR ’ TIL MY LIFE ON EARTH WILL CEASE . MAY MY BLACK AND EVIL SOUL BE OF CHRISTIAN LOVE AND GRACE FREE AS THIS PLATE IS OF GREASE . AND EFFEN I BECOME AN EVIL CRONE FROM MY OUTER SKIN TO INNER BONE , I ’ LL NEVER GIVEN ANY CHRISTIAN PEACE. Rain and shine, for eight mornings, Jonas came to the spring and repeated this ritual. On the ninth morning, he was supposed to become a witch and he took his gun and the silver bullet with him. He shot the bullet toward the sun as it came up over the ridge. They had told him that if the sun looked as if it were dripping blood as it came up, then he would be a witch. Jonas thought it did, and started home.  He had also been told that if he had become a witch, he would find a toad waiting for him when he got home which would be his familiar spirit or “imp.” But, there was no toad near the door, look as he might. This meant he hadn’t passed, and he’d have to do this all over again the next Friday the thirteenth. The second time, there was till no familiar waiting, either. But Jonas was stubborn, and he tried a third time before he became a conjure man. This took him two full years, but he said it was worth the time and trouble. Liz told him that it took so long because of the preachers in his family.

This is the whole triptych based on the religious origin story of Watership Down.

For today’s inktober I am thinking of going in and adding borders and stuff but we’ll see.

On the left is El-ahrairah, the middle are earthly rabbits, and the right is the Black Rabbit of Inle. In the whole triptych is contained the 3 worlds and basically all the major players.

It was great fun to do iconography for such a fantastic book!

These walls can talk: Australian history preserved by folk magic

The 160,023 convicts transported to the Australian colonies between 1788 and 1868 left leg-irons and chains a’plenty, but surprisingly little in the way of clothing. Were it not for a strange folk magic ritual, unknown and unsuspected until recently, the number of surviving convict garments, as well as other fascinating relics, would be very sparse.

Lost 'Epic of Gilgamesh' Verse Depicts Cacophonous Abode of Gods

A serendipitous deal between a history museum and a smuggler has provided new insight into one of the most famous stories ever told: “The Epic of Gilgamesh.”

The new finding, a clay tablet, reveals a previously unknown “chapter” of the epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia. This new section brings both noise and color to a forest for the gods that was thought to be a quiet place in the work of literature. The new found verse also reveals details about the inner conflict the poem’s heroes endured.

In 2011, the Sulaymaniyah Museum in Slemani, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, purchased a set of 80 to 90 clay tablets from a known smuggler. The museum has been engaging in these backroom dealings as a way to regain valuable artifacts that disappeared from Iraqi historical sites and museums since the start of the American-led invasion of that country, according to the online nonprofit publication Ancient History Et Cetera. This was a great find. It is more of an historical academic work on the importance of herbal manuscripts in medieval Europe, and the various forms of printed media that helped transmit magical knowledge to the people of 17th and 18th century Europe.

I paid under ten dollars for it, and it is a good size hard bound book

Thoughts on the Future of Traditional Witchcraft

Up until a couple years ago, Traditional Witchcraft was pretty unknown. People usually found it after exploring Wicca, Popular Wicca and/or Druidry for a long time first. In their excitement to find something that fit, and out of a sense of history, most forums and sites defined Traditional Witchcraft as witchcraft that was not Wicca or pre-Wicca without a lot of additional description.  While it was fairly easy to get books on Wicca and Druidry even from your local chain bookstore, if you wanted a book about Traditional, well it was going to be coming from the UK and if you didn’t live there it was going to cost a bit extra.

However, things started to change at the turn of the 21st century. First traditional witchcraft started to have a higher profile in the States with a few British and Italian Groups ending up with American branches or derivatives. Additionally a couple of American based traditions started to to expand because of widely available history books like Her Hidden Children by Chas Clifton and Triumph of the Moon pointing them out. The biggest update was more and more publishing houses like Xoanon, Scarlet Imprint, O Books, and Avalonia putting out books with both British and American releases. A number of popular internet forums and email lists continued the information dispersal.

Anymore people might come to Traditional Witchcraft first, with no knowledge of similar traditions like Wicca or Druidry. The constant contrasting is irritating and unhelpful to them. With this in mind, its time to update our approach. Introduction to Traditional Witchcraft books starting with the ABCs rather than relying on previous exposure are needed and there are only a few texts like that yet.  It is frustrating for those coming in on the ground floor to see those going on about the must have leather bound xyz book. New Traditional Witches feel excluded before they even start because of the implied assumption that they already have some prior experience and practice.

The most exciting discussions are happening on new social media like Facebook and Tumblr and take space integrated with folks’ other interests including but not limited to video games, anime, social justice, animals and relationships.  Topic specific sites like forums and email lists are starting to be ghost towns, but not because of a lack of interest–just the evolution of internet communication centers. Instead people talk on facebook groups or have side-blogs or even just use hashtags for their witchcraft interests. This takes discussion out of the privacy of a topic specific form or email list and into public lifestyle discourse and therefore puts it under a lot of scrutiny. Questions regarding gender and racial inclusion, about the necessity of positioning witchcraft against mainstream religions, and concerns about cultural appropriation are front and center in these stew pots.

I see a future where Traditional Witchcraft goes through some growing pains as it responds to some pretty varied allegations and folks sort out what is founded and what isn’t. As a counter-cultural tradition not every accusation lodged will stick because we don’t go with the mainstream on everything. However, a few pointed issues will be sussed out. In the meantime as Traditional Witches begin to define themselves positively instead of as not this and not that, I think our foundations will become stronger. The shorthand “Not Wicca” is not a strong foundation in the basics nor is it very accurate considering a number of traditions do include things borrowed from or in common with Wicca like the holidays, tool sets and horned god and land/moon goddess pairing.

Wishing you all a Merry Michaelmas!

Today was a full day for the Società di San Michele Arcangelo. We went to a local cemetery chapel of St. Michael, cleaned the altar, cleansed and reconsecrated the chapel- in the ways of the magi- after vandals attempted to desecrate the holy site. Afterwards I returned home and offered my own prayers and anointing at the Society’s altar and presented San Michele with his birthday cake. Now as I sit meditating by my altar with a glass of wine, I’m thankful for the events of today and for the continued protection and guidance I receive from my beloved patron.

The pig is one of irelands scariest creatures in folk culture

and there might be a boar death cult in medieval Irish literature.

In folk tradition pork and bacon are some of our best known foods and it used to be common in my parents day to keep a pig even in cities. But even though their such a big part of life the pig is linked with death and the pig pen is a place youll find ghosts. Worse still the black pig is the most dangerous form the fairies cant take. If you see it at night it means certain if not instant death. The boar in medieval literature is famous for killing the fianna and lit. might show that link between pigs and death in a feast where a boar is ritually slaughtered. Boar is a food in all the stories about feasts particualrly ones that take place in otherworld bruidne or Hostels. Places that historically housed the Fianna during the winter. The pigs can be immortal renewing themselves the next day to be eaten again or VAST in size. Giant pigs are famous through old place names, there are huge ditches all over ireland named the black pigs race and the black pigs dyke that people think were made by giant pigs. The best example of the ritual slaughter of a pig being a part of a death feast is in the story of Da Dergas (another name for a death god) hostel. The whole story is about King Cormacs inescapable doom and inevitable death at Da Dergas Hostel. He slowly breaks all his taboos and his death is presaged by the arrival of a big thick lad carrying a boar on his shoulders for the feast. Other links in medieval lit between pigs and death include Setanta finding a roast pig among the slaughter of a battle field at king conchobars demand and the Swine herd who shapeshifts eventually turning into Donn (a name for a death god) Cuailnge. The brown bull of Cooley in the Tain. http://aclockworkireland.blogspot.ie/
