Guide to Figuring out the Age of an Undated World Map.

No but take the time to actually read it because I lost like 15 minutes.

I have a friend who is really good at this type of thing.  He once found an old globe at a garage sale and he was able to pin the date of it’s making down to like a 6 month window, because it only would’ve been correct during a specific point in WWII.

I was mad impressed, because I have no mind for geography.  I can barely remember my own state’s capitol.

Tama is boss

THE TRAINS HAVE CARTOON TAMAS ON THEM

Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.

Beautiful.

Now I’m crying thanks

and a new cat was hired right?

yep! her name is Nitama (essentially ”second tama” or “tama II”) and she served under Tama as an apprentice before being appointed her deputy

she works very hard

Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016).  There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.

okay but actually what happened to santama (or sun-tama-tama, which is her name because it’s a pun on santama) was that she was basically sent to train for the position in okayama and they liked her so much they refused to send her back

“Sun-tama-tama” (a pun off of “Santama”, lit. “third Tama”) was a calico cat sent for training in Okayama. Sun-tama-tama was considered as a candidate for Tama’s successor, but the Okayama Public Relations representative who had been caring for Sun-tama-tama refused to give the cat up writing, “I will not let go of this child, she will stay in Okayama.” [25]
As of September 2018, Sun-tama-tama is working as the stationmaster in Naka-ku, Okayama and appears occasionally on Tama’s Twitter account.

Every time I see this post there’s new info and it gets better

You are only allowed to scroll pass this after you pay tribute to the great Tama Station masters.

The shrine of Tama Daimyōjin (Great gracious deity Tama), next to the Kishi station where she worked.

Nitama presenting her yearly offerings to Tama Daimyōjin on the anniversary of Tama’s Death, June 23 (The offerings are presented by the company president, as Nitama is a cat and thus can’t hold the offerings herself) (Not pictured, but also present, Yontama)

U kno what???? Honestly?? All jokes side about the Duolingo owl, Duolingo is one of the only language education services I know of that doesn’t charge for the full course and I really think we don’t appreciate that enough in a world where knowledge is severely (and increasing) restricted based on income. I just went through the app store and downloaded every language app I can find, and the only two that didn’t charge hefty subscription fees to access all the lessons were duolingo and memrise. Support free education.

I think about British Airways Flight 5390 a lot

OKAY STRAP IN because this is one of the WILDEST stories in aviation history.

In 1990, a British Airways BAC One-Eleven, captained by Tim Lancaster and co-piloted by Alastair Atchison, was cruising at 17,000 feet.

Around 15 minutes after take-off, flight attendant Nigel Ogden entered the cockpit to bring the pilots something to drink. One second everything was fine. The next second, the pilot's side window blew out from the force of the pressurized cockpit. Even though he was strapped in, the force of the explosive decompression ripped the captain out of his chair and pulled him though the window.

The flight attendant immediately leapt forward and grasped the captain's belt. The force was so strong - due to the plane's speed - the captain slipped and was pulled almost entirely out of the plane, but the flight attendant caught his leg. The captain laid on the roof, then the side of the fuselage (the above image is an inaccurate recreation - the side window was smashed) and the flight attendant's entire arm was soon outside of the plane, gripping him.

(Recreation from the show Mayday at the point of decompression)

At the same time, the event caused the autopilot to disengage, and the captain's body hitting the flight controls caused the plane to enter into a deep dive. The throttle was set to full power and could not be accessed due to debris, meaning the plane was descending rapidly. The co-pilot, experiencing hypoxia, fought to control the plane's dive while allowing it to continue descending to a level the passengers/crew could breathe at. He attempted to contact air traffic control, but the wind made communication impossible, so he broadcast a mayday signal. Finally, he was able to re-engage the autopilot and level the plane out at a breathable altitude.

Soon, the flight attendant's entire arm was burned from wind shear and frostbite, and his grip began to slip. The other attendants entered the cabin to see what was wrong and took over holding the captain's body. Seeing the blood covering the windows from the captain's severe wind sheer burns and frostbite, the attendants and co-pilot knew he was dead. However, they could not let his body go because it could smash into the wing, horz stabilizer, or engine, and bring the plane down.

For 30+ minutes the co-pilot flew a jet plane with an OPEN WINDOW and his co-worker's body hanging along the side of the plane. Finally, clearance to land from ATC came across over the sound of the wind and the flight attendants were able to dislodge the captain's ankles from the flight controls without letting him go. The co-pilot successfully landed the plane.

(tw below for blood)

(Taken same day as the incident)

BUT HERE'S THE KICKER: when they reached the ground and evacuated, they realized THE CAPTAIN WAS NOT DEAD.

He SURVIVED being outside the fuselage of a jet airplane traveling 550mph at 17,000 feet. His only injuries were extensive - but mostly superficial - frostbite and windshear burns, bruising, fractures in his hand, and shock. He has since stated that he remembers the event and was conscious for much of the time he was outside of the fuselage. The only other injury was the flight attendant's frostbitten/windshorn arm. Captain Tim Lancaster returned to flying five months later.

(Captain Tim Lancaster in bed several weeks after the incident, with flight attendant Ogden (+ Ogden's wife) above him and co-pilot Alastair Atchison to the far left, along with the two other flight attendants)

Why did this occur? Because the plane had received maintenance the day before, and the maintenance supervisor did not check he was using the correct screws in re-installing the windscreen.

(Recreation)

So yeah: you can apparently survive clinging to the side of a jet airliner traveling 500+mph at 17,000 feet.

Wow! Didn't expect this many likes for an aviation post.

Just a note that I was wrong - it was the front pilot's windscreen, not the side-window! I'm used to looking at Boeing windows with different positions :)

If y'all want the full story & more analysis of what exactly went wrong, Mayday: Air Investigations did a pretty decent special on the incident. It's free on YouTube here (and here on dailymotion if you're outside the US).

I remember reading about this in a book about probability and accidents. I believe it wasn’t just the wrong screws, but also many other small lapses that allowed it to happen eventually. We are all way closer to horrible accidents than we would do any good thinking about. The main thing that humans can do to assure safety is to have many many layers of safety protocols to follow. Nothing is absolutely always foolproof, but if you layer enough things, then even if there’s a problem you’ll still likely be saved by any of the other checks in place. It’s like swiss cheese - if you take a bunch of slices and stack them, the odds of all the holes lining up for something to slip through all of them is very low.

It’s actually really funny how many cultures have fox spirits and how many mostly consider them Complete Assholes, whether actively malicious or just dickheads that trick people

You’ve got the Kitsune that can be anywhere from incomprehensibly evil and powerful to doting mothers and good wives,

You’ve got the Huli Jing in China which were believed to be entirely female and needed male energy to survive, and did so by corrupting high-level politicians- and the Jiuweihu, the big girls that took to leading souls away from Dharma,

You’ve got the Gumiho in Korea, who just straight up eat people’s livers or steal their life force,

In Scandinavia, specifically Finland, fox spirits were believed to be the cause of Aurora Borealis, revontulet, the “fox fire”, as well as just usually messing with people, and then also the Brunnmigi for the Norse which poisoned water because fuck you,

The Celts also attributed them to be wily little bastards that existed to make fools of hunters and apparently that’s where the word “Shenanigan” came from, originally being sionnachuighim, “I play the fox” in irish gaelic,

In Europe you’ve got Reynard the asshole baron,

and from what I’ve seen a lot of native american tribes also just consider them dicks on the level of coyotes

it’s like every human that sees one of these

image

is just like “wow, what an asshole”, it’s great

Assigned bastard at birth

Modern fandom went awry when people stopped learning how to avoid content that upsets them and instead starting actively seeking it out.

I mean this in the kindest, most loving way possible, but babes you'll be so much happy when you stop focusing on what other people are doing and instead focus on what you like.

You'll never be able to stop people from liking what you hate, and the best way you'll find any peace of mind is properly utilizing blocking, blacklisting, and muting tools. Take it from someone who used to run a shipping discourse blog, fandom is supposed to be what you enjoy, stop focusing on things that upset you.

Hey, it's Mutt! My computer of six years fell apart without warning yesterday (6/7/21). I made the world's worst graphic on my friend's Mac for this (sorry!). I'm trying to job hunt and recover from losing my temporary job that would've helped with July's rent. I need to raise funds to buy a new laptop, pay rent, find work, and prepare for my upcoming hysterectomy. Right now I'm doing collage commissions, pet portrait commissions, and marker pages. Shipping is free to anyone in the US, those anywhere else will be quoted! I can take payment through Venmo, Paypal, or Cashapp. Prices are in USD.

Collage Commission Info I've collected hundreds of magazines, comics, books, vintage publications, and other materials; I can make collages with a wide variety of themes. I like to do poetry on them, but I can do compilations of subjects without words, too. Some examples of ones I've done are up above, but there are more at this link.

  • Surprise Custom: You pay me for a collage, I go wild, and then I ship it off to you. This option is for people who might want a collage from me but aren't really sure what they want/don't have any specifics. ($35.)
  • Custom: You give me any themes, moods, subjects, or topics you want me to draw from, and I make something for you specifically. Some that I've done in the past for others have been "death and decay", "rejecting a bad father", and "angelic imagery", so you can request anything! ($35.)

Pet Portrait Commission Info

You give me references of a pet or animal character you want drawn with an attention to detail (I can do anthros, too!), and I send it out to you. These are always done at 9 x 12 so you can easily frame them! Most of my art is done digitally, so I don't have a lot of examples on hand, but you can check out my art tag at this link to see what I can do.

  • $80 for pencil drawings on mixed media paper.
  • $100 for colored pieces done with Prismacolor pencils accented by Tombow markers or watercolor on mixed media paper.

Additional characters/pets in the same piece will be +$40 and +$60 respectively, so a pencil portrait with two characters will be $120, three will be $160, and so on.

Marker Page Commission Info The last three pictures are examples of marker pages. These are experimental and design-based. You give me a theme or a concept or a creature and I'll fill up a page of ideas for it! Colorful, fun, more whacky stuff than the realism of my other portraits. The last picture is just another reference for what I can come up with design-wise, but the colors will be done in marker the way the previous two references are! ($40.)

If you're interested in commissioning me, please feel free to either DM me directly here or shoot me an email at dingoinnuendos@gmail.com!

I also have a Ko-fi here if you're not interested in anything but want to help out. I appreciate it a lot either way, thank you all so much!

the job i just got hired at doesn't start until mid-august, i need some help to pull through summer and any at all would be super appreciated!!!
