Cyan studios and Rand Miller, creators of the Myst, Riven and Obduction, are developing a brand new game!

HOWEVER, they can only do so if they gain enough funding, and with 4 days to go, and an ‘all or nothing’ campaign, they still only have 75% of their funding!

This is their third Kickstarter, and they have been a reliable company for over three decades, so you’re definitely going to get your money’s worth.

Please please please, I want this game so bad, help it exist!

“Creamfaced businessboy” has become part of my daily vocabulary, without context or prompt.

I actually really miss the late 80s to early 90s design aesthetic. Buttons, knobs, wires, gauges. The iPod was a statement that stood against that, and everyone else followed, but I really hope the pendulum swings back.

This goes nicely with the thing I reblogged the other day about how, when you’re handing kids a “2001″ monolith with a subtle “power” button, you lose what (for a lot of us) was our first exposure to the really empowering idea that these were Mechanical Things That Worked A Certain Way And Had Parts That Moved In A Certain Order/Configuration and, therefore Could Be Mastered and, in the analog era, that was a basic product of a child’s innate, fidgety curiosity.

Yeah, you might fuck up your $20 copy of “All Dogs Go To Heaven”, but I learned the basic chain of causality behind videotape before I learned to multiply and divide and, ever since then, realizing that most technology is some version of that has had a hugely deflating effect on anyone’s attempts to make me afraid of it.

If you don’t give that to kids, and the way skeumorphism is being phased out makes me think things are trending that way, I feel like it sorta makes technology more of a site of ignorance and magical thinking and less of a place of discovery/hyperconnectivity between seemingly disparate things.  I enjoy, and in fact rely on, a lot of the evolutions in UI that I’m talking about.  However, I don’t like it when I want to look under the hood and can’t and I’m not sure how  

There’s a whole sideline here about app vs file cabinet interface paradigm making things more opaque and platform->bubble tendencies in media, but I’m sure another gif+commentary will make me think to type about that.

I’ve been wanting to make a new creature art book for a while now (my original is a little staple-bound thing my mother made me years ago).  But before I go investing an awful lot of time into making these paintings and cleaning up these sketches, I thought I’d see what level of actual interest there is out there for a book.  So, if you would like to potentially own said book in the future, please give this post a like (and maybe help me out with a reblog?)  Thank you!

ART THEFT WARNING: Please Read and Share

I am making a warning post about two facebook pages (which are presumably owned by the same person.)  Fans of Howl’s Moving Castle and Fans of Spirited Away

I first came across the Fans of Howl’s Moving Castle page when a friend warned me that they had taken my Howl piece and were attempting to sell it on a phone case, I reported them and they took down the post so I considered the matter closed.

Now I normally don’t make public posts on my art blog about specific art theft if the matter has already been resolved, but I visited the page today to be confronted with them yet again stealing my work.

So rather then keep this a matter only my friends and I know about, I feel the need to warn about this page.  They are under the guise of being a “fan page” but their only posts are about selling merchandise.

I also HIGHLY suspect that they are stealing from other artists besides me because of the different styles and lack of credit to the merchandise, but I have had little luck finding the original sources.  So if you see work on this page you recognize, PLEASE CONTACT THE ORIGINAL ARTIST and ask if this person running the “fan page” has permission to sell.

UPDATE:  I am no longer able to comment or message either facebook pages, and they are STILL attempting to sell my artwork and have not taken down their store pages with my stolen artwork on it.

Since they have effectively banned me, I am yet again asking for shares on this story, the page likes are increasing every day (their Howl page has more facebook likes then I do on my own facebook page.)  They are constantly deleting my comments or any comments calling them out on art theft, and yet they refuse to remove the post containing my stolen artwork.

Last time I complained to the stores it took days for them to respond, and since these “campaigns” to sell stolen work only last for a limited time, I am feeling very helpless about this situation.  Please spread the word so I can at least feel people are aware of the situation.
