Paintings for the 2024 Grumpy Bert/Harman Projects Red Envelope show celebrating the Year of the Dragon. Artists painted on the ubiquitous red envelopes that the Chinese fill with money and give out as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. "Yangban Dragon" is inspired by a nobleman portrait I saw at the National Gallery in Seoul. 3.5x6.5" acylic painting on red Chinese new year paper envelope. If you didn't know, Koreans also celebrate lunar new year. The gallery asked a few artists to also paint big 18x36" paintings, so I painted mine in acrylic on wood panel. Dragons are associated with agriculture and rain and the show has a red theme so it seemed natural to paint the Korean heirloom peppers I grow on our roof every year. Show runs from Feb 10-24th, 2024 https://www.harmanprojects.com/exhibitions/65-red-envelope-show-2024/

Happy new year, happy year of the dragon! In Asia dragons are associated with rain and agriculture, amongst other things, bringing the greens we love to eat. When I lived in Japan I learned of the tradition of sending a postcard with the zodiac animal of the year on New year's day (which is January 1st in Japan). I illustrated 12 japanese new years postcards over the years. This year I'm starting the cycle anew but making it Korean themed. The rest of Asia celebrates the lunar New Year later in the year but I've become accustomed to making these my holiday cards so I'm sticking with sending them out on January 1st. 새해 복 많이 받으세요 sae-hae bok man-i ba-deu-se-yo means please receive a lot of new year luck in Korean. I will be in my 50s by the time I've completed another 12 yr zodiac animal cycle, that's crazy. May your 2024 be like a dragon and if it does rain, you will grow that much more from it. Happy new year everyone.

Alice for my Limited edition artist series bottles for Rabbit Hole Distillery. I reimagined Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland characters in a sort of Steam Punk vehicle riding world. Alice is all grown up and tatted with Dinah as co-pilot in the front. The Dodo, (who was a metaphor for politicians) has a Boss Tweed type driver atop his destructive steel behemoth. The Caterpillar has emerged from his cocoon even more twee and affectatious than before and flies away in a puff of hookah smoke. Will Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum ever make it out of the forest while working against their own interests? The Queen’s Card Guardsman patrols the night skies. The Queen of Hearts is imposing on her half flamingo-half machine. “Dareringer” is single barrel cask strength Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks at 118 proof and luckily is my favorite of all their offerings. Available at select retailers in South Carolina and Texas. Posters, T-shirts, and stickers are also available. This was an incredible amount of work conceptualizing and designing and redesigning these characters and backgrounds. Alice in wonderland is beloved and has been reimagined so many times it took so long to develop something new. We had several half starts and reworks but in the end it was worth it, the bottles are beautifully printed and even have spot gloss embossing on the art. Time for me to go have 2 or 3 (or 4) fingers, Cheers! (also there will be more posts with behind the scenes and details stay tuned). See more of this project on my website. First attempt sketches, literal character based redesigns. Alice as grown up and a Raku ceramics badass or a photographer. The White Rabbit is constantly late for work

On Sale tomorrow Dec 12th at 12pm noon EST at https://bottleneckgallery.com/ Officially licensed 36x24" poster: Ground Assault. Hand numbered silk screened edition of 225, Black and White Variant edition of 125, 3D Lenticular Plex edition of 50, 3D Lenticular Plex Variant edition of 50. As a kid I was completely amazed by the Battle of Hoth and as an adult researching and seeing how they made it I am completely amazed again. Trap doors opening up in the snow on the miniature set so the modelers can move stop motion parts around? Amazing. Factoid: in ESB the "eye" port doors on the AT-ST were closed and in ROTJ they opened them. When you spend 100 hours drawing/rendering/detailing these designs you gain a unique appreciation for them. They are as great today as they ever were.

Pinch hitting for James Jean? What an honor when the best creative director in the biz Eric Skillman called me to do the interior tri-fold discpak for Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Gustafson's Criterion Collection release of Pinocchio. James' insane poster serves at the cover art and he was busy hanging his insane show in Shenzen at the time so I was called in for the additional art. Remember, this film won the Oscar for best animated feature last year! Back to James Jean, he was my hero when I was in school so even being considered to sub for him is crazy to me. You can see the mind of Eric Skillman in image 3 where he mocked up his plan. The last image is an inside baseball peak at additional bleed that needed to be added. I'll post a clip of the whole fold out in action when I get one. Thank you thank you to all involved and Gris Grimly who's also a hero of mine and who's 2003 Pinocchio book was their inspiration and he exec produced too.

Sayōnara, Attack on Titan! The Final Season - Part 3, the FINAL episode, airs on November 4th in Japan and the Americas and Nov 5th in Europe and the Middle East. In honor of the end of the series' 10 year run, i'm releasing a limited edition 24x36" poster with Spoke Art capturing a rarely seen moment when a Titan appears in a flash of light and steam. In an instant it's skeleton forms, followed by muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Levi, Eren, and Mikasa of The Scout Regiment swoop in to attack with their ODM gear, thunder spears, and blades. With the 60 meter tall Colossal Titan looming over Wall Rose, humanity must fight to survive. I've been wanting to make an Attack on Titan poster for years and was always scared about how much work it would be and I was right to be scared cuz it was SO much work, but also so fun creating this scene and mood and lighting it. Edition of 100 releasing Saturday Nov 4th 2023 at 1pm EST at https://spoke-art.com/

Out now! Welcome To The Arts: Dance. The largest project i've ever worked on, 45 illustrations including the cover. I illustrated dance from around the world including: Hip-Hop, Flamenco, Ballet, Contemporary, Ballroom, Kpanlogo, Kabuki, Salsa, Tap, and more. Also included are dance legends like Antonio Gades, Sir Matthew Bourne, Pina Bausch, Akram Khan, Rudolf, Nureyev, Martha Graham, The Nicholas Brothers, and more. Just researching for this book was a massive effort, on top of composing and executing the art. This book launches Big Picture Press' new Welcome To The Arts series. Written and curated by Sadler's Wells' artistic director Sir Alistair Spalding. Yes it was written by a knight! Big thanks to Oliva, Winsome, Joanna, Alistair, and my wife Jen and dog Dubu who saw very little of me for months as I toiled away on this book. I hope ya'll like it and get inspired to go out there and watch performances, research, and ultimately get your dance on!

I've been working on this for way too long after our trip to Korea this summer. I was born there, studied abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul in 2001, and have been back many times and am always inspired but never do anything with that inspiration until this time. I wanted to show the mix of traditional and modern. Jeonmo paper hats and janggu drums with black combat boots and double dutch braids. We played yut nori 윷놀이 (game with 4 wooden sticks you toss in there air like dice) with my in laws. I got my first tattoo there this summer amidst the rising tattoo culture in Seoul (I first got my stone name stamp 도장 in hangul the Korean alphabet and then a tattoo of that). The mountains depicted are from Irworobongdo, a folding screen painting featuring the 5 famous peaks of Korea (4 are in South Korea) and the sun and the moon and was always behind the king's throne during the Joseon era. We didn't hike any of the 5 famous peaks but we did hike beautiful Chiaksan to Seryeom falls, and drank lots of soju from modern green bottles and kimchi from onggi 옹기 clay pots. We rode the high speed KTX Eum train at 260km/h from Seoul to Wonju. We saw ocean waves at Gangmun beach and modern hanbok 한복 dresses (this one has short sleeves and a defined waist) worn around Gyeongbokgung 경복궁 royal palace in Seoul. Koreans adorn the shrines, temples, and hermitages with colorful dancheong 단청 design motifs. And of course we saw a lot of the taegeukgi 태극기, the South Korean flag with the red and blue 태극 swirl and 4 black trigrams in the corners. Everything I just mentioned is in this poster and if you haven't already, go visit Korea, especially since the won is so weak and currencies like the US dollar can buy so much there. And finally, heres the Vogue travel cover from 1918 that was my inspiration which oozes way more style and dynamism than I could ever hope for. Why can't we have covers like this anymore? You can buy this 24x36" poster HERE on my Society6 page, or in other sizes too. Thanks for looking and reading 감사합니다!
