A Droid a Day

@adroidaday / adroidaday.tumblr.com

Between August 2013 and August 2014 I drew one robot a day, every day. Now reposting some favourites and going back to re-work and colour some deserving droids.

Hello, it’s been a while…

Hi folks. It’s been a while since I’ve posted on Tumblr. I guess keeping a presence on multiple platforms has proved tricky. I know a lot of people, particularly in art are still using Tumblr, or are beginning to for the first time.

I think my question is - how do I make it more social here? I’ve got quite a lot of followers, but don’t really get much engagement - in terms of likes and reblogs. But I think what I miss on Tumblr, compared to other platforms, is the social aspect. Is that just how Tumblr is? Is it simply more for sharing content?

If anyone has any advice, that would be great.

In the mean time - here’s a big old robot. Drawn in Procreate on an iPad.

Weird Field World book now available to buy.

If you missed out on the Kickstarter for my Weird Field World book, you can now buy it directly. Choose from the standard version £25, or the deluxe signed version which comes with a print, stickers and bookmarks £40. There’s free shipping for all orders within the UK.

Weird Field World, Rob Turpin’s first book, tells the story of how humanity breaks out from the boundaries of their limited space technology; with help from unknown aliens.

In 2089 a message is received on Earth with instructions on how to build a new type of spaceship. One that can reach Mars in days rather than months, and Jupiter in weeks rather than years.

The book is packed to the gunwales with illustrations, sketches and maps showing the new exotic spaceships along with the people and stories that surround them.

Weird Field World, funded on Kickstarter, smashed its stretch goal in just 36 minutes.

Dude I dont know if its okey to submit an ask like this because it looks like you dont want to clutter your blog with asks but I just cannot think of a way to research fictional machines. I just get overwhelmed by how the internal parts work and give up. It must be hard coming up with all these droids. I just wanted to say I really appreciate them.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I don’t check on Tumblr that often these days.My tips would be -

1. Use Pinterest. Collect images on separate boards for different subjects. So I have boards for spaceships, aeroplanes, military hardware, machines, rocket engines, …2. Look at real world tech. Take photos of earth movers, bulldozers, combine harvesters. Look at how real tech works - how do panels look, how do hoses and cables connect, what engine parts are on show etc.3. Try to incorporate some of this in to your sketching. 4. Don’t obsess over things looking mechanically perfect.5. Look at how people like Ian McQue and Jake Parker draw machines, spaceships, and tech. A lot of the time the specifics are just hinted at. If you scribble or sketch something that looks a bit like machinery, people will fill in the detail themselves.6. It’s about convincing the viewer, its not about perfection.

I’ve launched a Patreon for my Weird Field World creations. WFW is sci-fi set three hundred years in the future where humanity has managed to populate the solar system with the help of Alien engineering and technology.

On Patreon I’ll continue to create this world through illustrations and writing, posting regularly to update my Patrons. If you’d like to know more, or to join me on the journey, you can find my Patreon page here.

My Illustrations are finally available as prints!

I’ve been asked lots in the last couple of years about producing prints of some of my illustrations, and I’ve finally got around to sorting it out.

If there’s an illustration of mine you like, but we haven’t made available, just let us know.

Prints! Coming very soon.

Just doing final checks on test prints. I’ll have (maybe) a dozen illustrations to choose from, most of them available at a couple of sizes. Worldwide shipping.

The print store should be online and accepting orders within a couple of weeks.
