A number of months ago the international Christian community grieved the passing of famed apologists and evangelists Ravi Zacharias. This week, we grieve over him again but in a different way. The recent revelations of his secret life and sexual misconduct have been very sad. My heart and prayers go out mostly to his wife and children who are now left to make sense of this all. 🙏🏻

Throughout the week I’ve been reading through a number of articles and thought pieces (a quick google search will point you to those) and so in the same manner that I quoted Jackie Hill Perry months ago upon hearing of Ravi Z’s passing, I quote her again here:

I’m reminded that giftedness will never translate to godliness. Neither is orthodox teaching the proof of righteous living. Satan quoted Psalms 91 when he tempted Jesus. The demons told the truth about Jesus when they called him “the holy one of God”. When Nathan gave David the parable of the poor man with the stolen lamb, David’s assessment of the story was right and yet he was too blind to see that he was the bad guy in the story. The point I’m making is this: Saying good things isn’t the same as having a good character. And that’s a hard truth because we want to believe that our hero’s believe too but sadly, that’s not always the case.

As the season of Lent is now upon us, how apt it is that followers of Jesus now heed this warning that has come through Ravi Z’s life and take the opportunity to examine our hearts and life and bring it in full surrender before the Cross. May there be congruence in our lives - between the private and public life, work and family life, seen and unseen etc. As the old saying goes to “practise what we preach”. May the fear of the Lord rest upon us all.

Eulogy for 阿嬷

Ahma 阿嬷, Mdm Lim Jit Eng, 1935 - 2019. Called home to be with the Lord on 5 Jul 2019.

My folks and I wrote a eulogy that I delivered at her funeral:

Dear family and friends,
Thank you so much for coming today and for the last 2 days during the wake. We really appreciate all the care and concern from all. This means a lot to us that you are here.
My name is Amanda. I am the eldest granddaughter.
We are thankful to God for sustaining Ahma for the past 84 years. Growing up in 1930s in kampung Singapore, going through 2nd world war, she experienced hardships and trying times. One major early challenge was losing her mother at 8years of age. Even though Ahma did not have a mother growing up, she was a wonderful mother to my mother and my Ahgu and a wonderful grandma to us.
In my memory, Ahma was always a fiery woman, sharp with her tongue but kind with her touch and loving in her own way. She loved to add sugar in her cooking, even to her soups and curry. And she made her own clothes from scratch, sewing on her trusty old Singer sewing machine late into her life and only till her poor eyesight left her unable to do so.
Ahma was an extremely resilient and tough woman. When she got married to Ahgong, Ahma never considered herself a working woman, but to support her family, she was actually a farmer. She raised pigs, bred them, sold the piglets for money and repeated the cycle. She had told me stories of how a few times the pigs ran away, and she had to bash through the jungle to find them and bring piglets home before others stole them.
In this last few years Ahma suffered various health difficulties and the most major one was the stroke in 2017 that landed her in the St Andrew’s nursing home. Prior to this she had survived 2 critical hospitalisations where we thought she would pass on. This latest stroke left her paralysed on the right side of her body. She became bedridden and was no longer able to communicate with us.
God has been very good and gracious to Ahma and to us and we are so thankful that she had the opportunity to come to know Him. Shortly after her admission to St Andrew’s, my Ahgong made a firm decision to have the idols in the house removed. It was eventually made known to us that it was in fact Ahma’s desire to remove the idols in the home before she was left unable to speak. We praise God for Ahma’s conviction in her heart that influenced Ahgong too.
On Friday night, we had the privilege to be with Ahma as she took her last breathe. It was our desire that she would not pass alone, and we thank God that we could hold her hand, and speak to her and pray with her as she passed peacefully.
As Christians, we have a blessed hope in our Lord. The Bible says that we do not grieve without hope. Our hope is that one day we will all be with our Lord in Heaven, and in that way we know we will get to see Ahma again. Ahma has been promoted to glory and gone home to be with the Lord. This is not goodbye. This is “see you again”.
Ahma, we love you. And we will miss you. 再见

"What is Purity?" - John Gray & Chad Veach | Awakening

@ 4:03 "...because I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. As my Savior He saves me from my sin, as my Lord He directs my path. So as Lord, He gets the right to define how I express my sexuality. I submit that to Him. ...Once you get saved, you submit your will to His and say, 'God I no longer reserve the right to define how I express this area of my being'. He's not just Lord of my emotions or Lord when I'm sick. He is Lord of my sexuality, and He must be God in that area as well. So don’t give Him half your life and then keep that part." #sogood

“...how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from Me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their detestable practices.” ‭‭

Desiring God - Are You Really A Christian?

Christian Hedonism changes how we think about conversion. Matthew 13:44: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
What is becoming a Christian? Becoming a Christian is not only believing truth; it’s finding a treasure. That’s what it means to become a Christian. You find the treasure. And if you find the treasure that is worth your selling everything to have, it’s the greatest treasure imaginable.
So, have you found him? I’m not asking if you’re going to church, signed the card, prayed the prayer, or believe doctrines. I’m saying, Have you found him? Are you explosively ready to let it all go to have him? Or is he just marginal and everything in here is central? Then maybe you’re not a Christian. To be converted is to find Christ as a treasure.

Dad called these "his and hers chairs." He would sit beside Mom, his partner and wife of 34 years, as they got their weekly chemotherapy treatments. Howie Borowick had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and wife Laurel was in treatment for breast cancer for the third time. For him, it was new and unknown. For her, it was business as usual, another appointment on her calendar.

Great Big Story’s Brain Freeze: Welcome to the Country's Largest Brain Collection

This is super cool and reminds me of my work. Attended a talk by a Nobel laureate before and he said: with research there can be progress. Kudos to all the volunteers, and their families, for being willing to donate their tissue samples for the advancement of knowledge.

“I think the more we learn about the world, it points more towards God, rather than less. ... God is not a thing out there in the universe that we look for, it’s the other way around. God is the reason why there is a universe.” ~ Ard Louis (Physicist)

This reminds me why I loved biology so much. I recall being captivated by a the sense of awe and wonder during my studies, and even now as I continue to work in the field of science it draws me to the Creator, rather than prove the non-existence of one.

“The most significant—and often overlooked—thing is that the gospel treats us all the same. All of us are sexually fallen, whether we’re same-sex attracted or opposite-sex attracted. We’re all in the same situation and all need the same forgiveness and restoration that can only be found in Christ. Discipleship involves the same cost for us all: denying self and taking up our cross. I suspect that Christians who balk at what the gospel seems to cost their gay friends haven’t really started counting the cost of discipleship in their own lives.
The most important insight the Bible gives us when it comes to identity is that it is not earned or discovered, but received. We cannot on our own determine or discover our own true identity, whether it is sexual identity or any other kind. We cannot know who we are without first knowing whose we are. The only way to make sense of who we are is to make sense of what we’re for.”
