Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul is currently flooded

I don't make these kinds of posts, but Rio Grande do Sul (a brazilian estate) is going through its worst natural catastrophe in recorded history and I need everyone to know about this. Its currently looking like this:

What is going on

Most of Brazil suffers from yearly floods during the rain season. These floods most of the time aren't bad, with water going away a few hours later. Sometimes they are a nightmare, with people losing their homes and most if not all belongings. But this?

This is not fucking normal.

Currently (May 6th, 2024) there's +80 confirmed deaths and 873 thousand people are being affected by these historical floods. Eight hundred and seventy three THOUSAND people. Once again: THIS. IS. NOT. NORMAL.

Rio Grande has 496 cities, and currently, 364 are reporting problems related to this. It's almost the entirety of Rio Grande - and you know how big Rio Grande is? If you're from the USA, its just a bit bigger than Colorado, and just a bit smaller than Nevada. If you are European, Rio Grande is bigger than the United Kingdom. Can you imagine if almost the entirety of the UK was underwater? Because I sure fucking can just by watching brazilian news!

Rio Grande expects floods. It rains a lot in Brazil. What no one expect is having to deal with 2,30 meters - 7'7 feet for reference - ABOVE the expected flooding level, which is 3 meters (9'10 feet). This means that there were 5,26 meters (17'3 ft) of water. Chart for comparison:

I live in São Paulo, which is completely unaffected by what is going on over there, but I need people to be aware of this. Why?

lets use this as an opportunity for learning and growth guys. By platforming Israel, Eurovision legitimizes and enables their genocide. In the same way that Russia has been banned from participating from the Olympics in an act of solidarity with Ukraine, Eurovision had the opportunity to stand in solidarity with Palestine. Instead, they have chosen to associate themselves with Israel, a violent colonial state, uplifting them to an international stage to do pr for themselves.

In the same way, all contestants in Eurovision had the opportunity to condemn Israel or call for their removal from the competition. I'm sorry because I know people get a lot of joy from the music but in a situation as dire as Palestine neutrality is functionally the same as complacency.

I ask you to boycott Eurovision in solidarity with the 34,535 Palestinians who have lost their lives in the last few months. The 77,704 who have been wounded. The 1.5 million survivors, most of them displaced and mourning, who are packed into Gaza right now. Have the empathy and willpower to be serious for like 10 seconds and recognize that you can find entertainment elsewhere.

New Theme: Pets!

My pets are a huge part of my life, and due to some recent health situations I'm feeling especially grateful to have their warm, fluffy love in my life. So to recognize that, the next rec list will be about fics featuring pets! Submit yours here, and the list will go live on Wednesday, May 15th.

Maybe it's your character(s) adopting a pet together -- is that stressful, or exciting, or sappy, or all of the above? Maybe they've had their pet for a while, and something is happening regarding that -- traveling, a trip to the vet, the pet runs away and they have to find it. Maybe they bond over their pets and aren't sure if they'll get along when they start dating. Maybe one of them has an unusual pet, like a snake or a bird, and the other is a bit nervous around it at first, but the human is so cute he overcomes his fear.

Animal reference photo compilation concept test!

I've been saving this project for a new website I'm planning, but that's been delayed by the grindstone of capitalism, so I'm going to set up this part early. This is the concept test for a repository of reference photos of a whole bunch of different species of exotic animals.

For every 50 or so photos I take of an animal, there's generally only a couple that I like and are also in focus and also framed correctly. But that led me to realize... all those slightly blurry or off-center photos are probably a great set of references for people interested in general shape/form/movement for their art! So I'm setting up of the idea before fully committing the time into making it happen.

I've been going through my photo backlog and pulling out the shots I think will be useful for art references. Lots of them show posture, facial movement, close-ups of feet or eyes, and walk cycles, but also other behaviors like jumping or drinking. They're not perfect - there's often stuff out of focus or reflections on the glass - but I think they'll still be useful for art?

Right now I've got folders of four species uploaded for this test: California Condor (CW for carcass feed photos), Jaguar, Komodo Dragon, and Moose. If this turns out to be as useful as I'm hoping, and the photos work, I've got a whole bunch more species to upload.

This would be *SUPER* useful; a lot of stuff that people use for reference seems unnatural or wouldn't map on to how you might want to manipulate the anatomy for a drawing and a somewhat blurry partial shot of an animal doofing around doing its own thing is going to be a lot more useful for me personally than a dynamic or noble photo of an animal that someone deemed worthy of publication.

Also i was trying to look up reference pictures of tigers the other day and the sheer amount of AI images that flooded the search was overwhelming, it would be good to know there was a place to go where I could just be like "hey let's see what's in the collection" instead of depending on the whole wide web.

So I'd say that it's worth doing if you've got the time and energy to do it, and I can't think of any suggestions to add to what is already a fantastic idea.

someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic

I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS

I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?

the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"

this is directly related to this post I made about how fanfic authors now are treated like content mills, and not like valued members of a creative community who thrive on interaction. for the past decade, we've watched the fandom ecosystem disrupted over and over, as NSFW fan artists seek safety by putting their work behind paywalls, and self-conscious fic readers squirrel away their feelings in invite-only communities

an easy way to do your part to fight against the evils perpetrated by social media is to leave a comment on a fanfic you love

but don't take my word for it -- here are some responses that my fellow authors have left on this post:

The fact I had a fic that was fairly beloved and NO ONE commented on it because it was all being done in a fucking book club server made me want to scream.

I haven't updated that fic in two years now.

I cannot express enough how imperative it is to show the writer how much you love their work. The comments don't have to be novels themselves - even just an "I loved this so much!" Or keyboard smashing works wonders to keep the writer going. Please, we need to bring back supporting writers and artists now more than ever!!!

Dear lord please tell me if you love my fics. Kudos, comments, anything. I'm not going to stop writing them because I am like unto a femme possessed at times. But there are too many fucking anti assholes trying to kill my ship (if you like RavWave, please write some yourself!)

I would love to hear from people who love me more.
