The One Direction singer was moved to tears by a performance from Anthony Russell, who returned to the show after being forced to pull out last year to tackle ‘personal issues.’

Louis told the judging panel he reached out to Anthony following his decision to leave the show, and a friend of the star exclusively told MailOnline he acted as a continuing support through his struggles.

The friend said: ‘Louis felt an affinity to Anthony when he was on the show last year. He believed he had a real future – as long as he could, and can, overcome his issues.

'He got in touch with Anthony as soon as he left the show last year and has been a constant friend to him in the last year.

'From when he first spoke to Anthony, he was determined to get Anthony fit and well enough to enter the show in 2018. Louis has helped Anthony get the help he needed.

'Louis had no idea at that stage (when he reached out to Anthony) that he would become a judge in the future.

'He is delighted to be a judge now – but was determined to be 100 per cent transparent with his fellow judges, the audience and the general public at large, about the support he has given to Anthony to help get him back on his feet.’

It has also been revealed that Louis was moved to tears by Anthony’s audition, and said it wouldn’t be fair to vote on whether to send him through to boot camp and thus abstained from making a decision.

When Anthony made his way onto the stage for the audition, Louis told panellists Simon Cowell, Robbie Williams and Ayda Field: 'After Anthony auditioned for this show last year and sang Issues with a black eye, he stole my heart straight away.

'He has had some struggles. I have really got to know him and his family and he is a really lovely guy.’

After Simon admitted he was being 'modest’, Anthony went onto add: 'I was doing well in the competition last year. I got through six chair challenge. My head was everywhere. I got in touch with the producers and said I don’t think I’m ready to go on, I was going down a dark path.

'I was in a dark place. After the audition Louis reached out and offered me the help I needed. I just jumped at it. I am doing good now.’

Following a sensational audition Robbie praised his performance, while wife Ayda added: 'I know you and Robbie have faced some similar dark paths and what I know with Rob is how much courage it takes to get out of a dark place. It was phenomenal and I think you’re ace.’

Simon said: 'First of all forget your character, just judging your voice it was sensational.

'The second thing I want to say about Louis, I read something in a book where it said if you were lucky enough to find your mentor that person can change your life. You meeting Louis, I think that happened.’

Louis struggled to hold back his tears throughout the exchange, adding: 'I have got to pull myself together after that, I’m pretty emotional.’

Anthony then went onto thank the singer for all his support, saying that he 'wasn’t expecting’ to be contacted by the performer.

It was then that Louis said he didn’t feel it right that he vote, but luckily Anthony received three yeses from the panel and was sent through to the next round.

The Liverpudlian had previously quit the show last year to tackle some ongoing personal issues, and a source told MailOnline at the time: 'Anthony has been going through some personal issues for some time - as he sang about at his audition.

'Those issues were still affecting him. So everyone has urged him to concentrate on getting himself better right now. Anthony has always said he will never give up on music.

'Production are all very fond of him and think he has really potential so have told him, if he straightens himself out, they would love him to have another shot at X Factor next year.

'That is the perfect incentive for him to get his life back on track. The public support really did help him to believe in himself. So everyone hopes he will come back next year healthier’.

A spokeswoman for X Factor said of the reports: 'Earlier this month, due to personal reasons, Anthony withdrew from the show. We are sad to see him go and wish his all the best for the future.’
