They absolutely look like that; my fave is the I-10 410 interchange

which has the nice combo of looking like THAT but also you have the ridiculous boom in housing from the baby boom *right there* You can even see the elementary school i went to (on the left, next to the baseball diamond in the private school next door)

Georgia's got a couple of those too! We call this one "Spaghetti Junction". Sometimes I have to use it on my way home depending on if I need to run errands east of my house.

Fun fact: According to a list of traffic hotspots put out by the American Transportation Research Institute, Spaghetti Junction was number 1!

But aesthetically, at least this one looks kinda symmetrical if you squint hard enough. If you wanna see a real doozy, here's where I-20 meets I-75/85, smack dab in the heart of Atlanta.

you see, because I have two cats, some people have crowned me as the ultimate authority on all animal matters

which means that when they take home a 6-week puppy and their second dog sees it as a prey animal and crushes its skull, I get a message of “heyyyy Greer, so what should I do about my crushed baby dog?” (yes this is a real example, I told them to please, please, please go to a vet)

this has become a funny post because arsnof is a genius, but it was originally a desperate plea

As I gaze at the structural column in Copley Station, cracked nearly in two and held together with zip ties that have been carefully painted over to match the column underneath, I feel my soul intertwined with that of a small Italian boy of days gone by, who also stopped to look up at a large, groaning, newly painted tank full of molasses

I feel that some non-Boston people think I may have been exaggerating this. While I did not snap a photo as I was on the train, someone else did several months ago. I do want to stress that this column is now freshly painted and therefore completely structurally sound and in absolutely no danger of causing the entire tunnel to collapse. And yes, it did in fact never cross my mind that the original post was nearly 105 years to the day of the Molassacre

The concrete surface appears to be a decorative facade; the load is carried by a steel member underneath. That means that the steel bands holding the concrete on are just to keep the cosmetic part in place.

That said, there do appear to be support members in the MTA system that have deteriorated to the point of creating a safety risk.

Good point.

While there is evident spalling (the peeling), it's created by a process called iron oxide jacking (or "rust burst"). They are both symptoms of significant deterioration in masonry or reinforced concrete. The structural rebar has experienced water penetration, which causes the rebar inside to corrode (rust and crack, losing tensile strength). This pressure continues to create cracks through the concrete itself, exacerbated more so by the geographic location: Boston experiences cold winters, and when water freezes, it expands, further compromising the structural integrity of the reinforced concrete. As water continues to leach into the columns, this will continue to further degrade the integrity of the internal structure with freeze-thaw cycles.

@emthroney is correct in that pushing everything back together, zip-tying it up, and painting it over will only expedite this process. Ultimately this is not just a problem for these singular columns, but overall there is some larger water seepage issue that is not being addressed.

A singular column collapse would not be catastrophic (in the technical sense, it would most likely not cause the entire station to collapse), but if multiple columns are compromised the structural integrity of the ceiling is in question, and there are probably much worse problems that cannot be seen. 😥
