Q: Girls are discouraged? That sounds so 1970s. A: There was a 2001 study that showed in fourth grade, 68% of boys and 66% of girls like science. Starting in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, we lose girls and boys, but we lose more girls and for different reasons: lingering stereotypes, societal pressures. It’s well known that many girls have a tendency to dumb down when they’re in middle school. Just last week, I was talking to senior executives, and a woman told me that she was the best biology student in high school and had the highest exam scores. At the end of the semester, a teacher told her: “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to give the award in biology to a boy, because it’s more important to him.” Almost every time that I give a speech or meet with a group of women, I’ll hear such stories. Q: Boys earn 70% of the D’s and F’s in school and account for 80% of dropouts. Shouldn’t we fear more for their future? A: It’s a big problem. Women earn the majority of undergraduate degrees in the U.S. and last year earned more Ph.D.s than men. But keeping girls in the science and math pipeline is a separate problem with different causes. It’s important we address both. You don’t stop research on breast cancer just because heart disease is also deadly. You work on both. Q: Suppose you were an executive of a corporation that needs engineers. You meet a girl in high school. She scored in the 99th percentile in math on her SATs, yet says she wants to major in psychology or go to law school, because those careers sound more interesting. What do you tell her? A: I’d introduce her to the coolest female engineer in the company. Girls tend to have a stereotype of engineers being 65-year-old guys who wear lab coats and pocket protectors and look like Einstein. Try to make it personal to them and show them some of the cool things that they can do in engineering. Q: Let’s talk Lawrence Summers. The Harvard president recently resigned after giving a controversial speech a year ago suggesting that men might simply be predisposed to be better at math and science. Is there at least a grain of truth in what he said? A: (Laughs). Suppose you came across a woman lying on the street with an elephant sitting on her chest. You notice she is short of breath. Shortness of breath can be a symptom of heart problems. In her case, the much more likely cause is the elephant on her chest. For a long time, society put obstacles in the way of women who wanted to enter the sciences. That is the elephant. Until the playing field has been leveled and lingering stereotypes are gone, you can’t even ask the question. Q: I will anyway. There are many obvious biological differences between men and women. This can’t be one? A: There are obvious differences, but until you eliminate the more obvious cause, it’s difficult to get at the question scientifically. Look at law, medicine and business. In 1970 — that’s not ancient history — law school was 5% female, med school was 8% and business school was 4%. You could have taken a look at those numbers and concluded that women don’t make good lawyers or doctors. The statistics might have supported you. But today, all of those fields are about 50-50.

And so it was that, in one sentence, Sally Ride destroyed every MRA argument ever.

oh yeah and i can’t believe it’s taken me this long to bring this up but i’m absolutely not here for people shading the “american girl today”/”my american girl” line because

  • the line literally enables girls to create a doll that looks like them
  • including a wide array of non-white skin tones and non-european features
  • like black dolls with curly and textured hair
  • or asian dolls that appear to have epicanthic folds
  • and they’ve also released accessories like doll-sized wheelchairs, hearing aids, and crutches so that girls who aren’t able-bodied or are hard of hearing can have a little friend who shares their experiences
  • and they’ve even begun to offer dolls without hair for little girls who have alopecia or have lost hair while battling cancer
  • and basically if you don’t think that’s the tightest shit then get out of my face

Also: SERVICE DOGS.

IT’S SO CUTE IT EVEN HAS TRAINING TREATS. You go American Girl.

They also consulted the Nez Pierce when making their Kaya doll and that’s why her smile doesn’t show teeth, among other things, and they’ve released some beautiful, and accurate, modern Powwow regalia for her.

Also they’ve been offering all this stuff since I was still getting the catalog. I just turned 29, so if I’m going to guess, that means they’ve been offering these options since at least 1996ish.

And just to be sure that we’re all on the same page: there are no bright yellow school busses in Baltimore City. The police shut down public transportation and filled the streets with an army in riot gear. Thousands of teens on those same streets, trying to get home. How many were scared to make eye contact for fear of being the next Freddie Gray? How many were pissed-off enough to break a window or set a fire?

this is so fucked up

look at this

don’t look away. don’t fucking turn your head, don’t scroll that mousewheel. fix your eyes on this because in the years to come they’re going to call this story a conspiracy theory. they’re going to call this reality, this thing that truly happened, a conspiracy theory.

but they created the circumstances which lead the youth of the city of baltimore to lash out in terror and indignation. the police treated them like animals, tried to corral them, and these kids, these children, just getting out of school, reacted.

imagine if this had happened to you. you just got out of school. all you were thinking about was your work and your friends and getting home and you get fucking teargassed by a wall of riot cops.

what would you have done under that pressure?

I fight Rape Culture because When I told my ex boyfriend about my rape He ‘forgave’ me. I fight Rape Culture because I saw my baby sister age overnight As she told me about her best friend getting molested. I fight Rape Culture because My closest friend was abused as a child And he told nobody but me. It took him 13 years to open up. I fight Rape Culture because My friends admit to letting their partners fuck them when they don’t want it Then laugh it off as typical male behaviour. I fight Rape Culture because Saying that you’re raping someone is perfectly acceptable If you’re playing a video game. I fight Rape Culture because Men tell me they are insulted when women walking in front of them start to walk faster. As if their ego is more important than our safety. I fight Rape Culture because If I tell somebody their rape joke isn’t funny I am told that I’m uptight. I fight Rape Culture because It won’t die out Unless we kill it ourselves.

No, you can’t deny women their basic rights and pretend it’s about your ‘religious freedom.’ If you don’t like birth control, don’t use it. Religious freedom doesn’t mean you can force others to live by your own beliefs.

Hey everyone who’s been talking about Hillary being the less of 2 evils.

There’s another alternative and his name is Bernie Sanders.

Sanders is a self proclaimed socialist who is one of the two independent senators in the nation.

He’d be the first jewish president.

His platform includes

Raising minimum wage Equal pay for women Reversing climate change Helping workers Taking on Wall Street corruption Making College affordable for all Healthcare for all

He has been fighting for lgbtqiap+ rights since the 90’s He was against the invasion of Iraq in 2002 He’s been a big supporter of campaign finance reform He’s committed to improving veterans healthcare and lives after coming home He’s written a bill to help HIV+ patients afford healthcare He’s voted to punish crimes in alternative rehabilitative ways He’s been an advocate for bettering public school education. He’s pro-gun control

He’s just a good guy who will put the American people above profits. The issue is he’s not even close to as wealthy as Hillary so he hasn’t got a chance unless the people support him.

Bernie Sanders is an Independent but he is running as a Democrat, which is great news!! If he were running against Hillary in the general election, he would have split the left-wing vote and ensured a win for the Republicans. This way we can get Hillary out of the running in the primaries!!

Bernie Sanders is also notable for an 8-and-a-half hour speech in congress back in December of 2010, where he decried the increasing class gap and ridiculous amounts of control the rich have over our country. The speech was so notable that it was watched by millions online until the traffic crashed the Senate’s servers.

Remember: to vote in a primary or caucus in most states, you must be registered to vote as a member of the party who’s primary/caucus you want to vote in (in this case, the Democratic party). In addition, most states require you to be registered in that party a certain amount of time before the election date. For example, in the state of New York, you cannot change your party affiliation in the same year that you vote in the new party’s primary. The change also must be filed for at least 25 days before the current year’s General Election. Therefore, to vote in the 2016 primary election in the state of New York, you would have to register as a Democrat by October 9, 2015. Remember, the rules vary by state, so be sure to learn beforehand and register early!
